Well spotted, Q, you passed the test. It's possible of course that there is an electronic one with a button round the side, but if so the vendor should have mentioned this. Certainly worth asking the question * ......if the whole bar mechanism has been removed then it's not really much good to man or beast. * I have fired off the following question.Dear mortlock7,
Nice looking table, but I cant see a handle to pull to lift the bar. Does it have a mechanical or electronic timer which is usual to start the clock ticking and lift the bar - hence the term "Bar billiards table" ?
Thanks, Clive

1st Reply: Hi Clive, Thanks for the interest. I'm selling this on behalf of my grandmother so sorry to sound stupid but what is this 'bar'? I understand it must be something hence the name but could you please explain. The table doesn't appear to have any timer or handle. I will speak to my grandmother and try to find more information for you. Thank you, LukeMy follow-up: Hi Luke, Thanks for giving such a quick reply. My interest in on behalf of the Norwich Bar Billiards League which was only formed five years ago and is thriving to the extent that they are always seeking tables to install into new venues (there is quite a waiting list for tables)' By 'bar' we mean that tables suitable for league play have a wooden bar inside which falls after about 17 minutes and stops any further balls potted coming through to the tray. This is controlled by a timing mechanism which is activated when you put a coin in the slot and pull a handle (or press a button). If your table does not have this and the balls come through all the time then I'm afraid it would vastly limit the interest as your table would only be suitable for private use. You can see what I mean by Googling 'bar billiards', or a site like Mercury Leisure when shows diagrams of some of their bar billiards spares. Regards, Clive2nd Reply: Hello, I see what you mean now. Yes unfortunately there is no coin slot or handle so does not have a timer, and as you said limits it to personal use. Thanks for the interest anyway, I understand if it is not suitable for your requirements. All the best, LukeAt least three bidders have shown an interest to the extent of £310, but I shouldn't think it will go much higher. Went for £501 after 10 bids.

Looks like an old Padmore (judging by the cue slots), these tables are usually narrow. Location Witham, Essex: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiard-Table-/251361234844He's a bit sparing with the photos ! No bids, item re-listed 27/10/13: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiard-Table-/251366601472?Bidding ended, no takers again at £695 Item relisted, 11/11/13: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiard-Table-/251375846465Bidding ended, no takers again at £695 This one's been on before.........re-listed 28/11/13:www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiard-Table-/251390817038 Bidding ended, no takers @ £795 (yeah, didn't sell at £695 so bump the price up by a hundred !)Re-listed 10/12/13: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiard-Table-/251397827412?Bidding ended again, unsurprisingly no bid (set far too high for a narrow table) Re-listed 28/12/13: (yeah, didn't sell at £795 so bump it up even further to £850 !)www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiard-Table-/251412793706Bidding ended, relisted 04/01/14 with opening bid request now dropped back to £725: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiard-Table-/251417942599?Bidding has ended on this item. A relief to us all if he's sold it privately! Then he might, just might, get a sniff.

Caveat emptor on this one from Holsworthy, NW Devon (near to Bude): www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiards-Table-Slate-Bed-refurbishment-/331095485290- Self-confessed cracked slate - Faded cloth - Serious damage to top of leg suggestive of mishandling (dragging across a floor) - No evidence of a timer Not a lot going for it, really. Think maybe we should form an R.S.P.C.BBT. Went for just £101-01 after 5 bids.

Another ex-pub one (further mystery where) from Ilkeston, Derbys: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-billiards-table-/261390808150Good accessories and looks in reasonable condition. However......77,636 on the clock is an amazing number of games for a narrow table. And the channel markings are for a standard SAMS whereas it is most definitely a narrow top. So something not quite ringing true here. Went for £520 after 9 bids

'Full-sized' claimed for this one, but definitely narrow......location Gillingham: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/bar-billiards-table-/301104331908Probably privately owned, good condition but no apparent timing mechanism. Alfred Sams label and also the round NBBL label - though I can't conceive this has ever been in League use. Went for £511 after 12 bids.

Narrow SAMS, ex-pub *, poor condition, from Bulkington, Warwickshire: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Original-Pub-Bar-Billiards-Table-/181344457333Three punters have already put low bids in........condition means someone will acquire an intrinsically sound table for little cost.
* probably from the Weavers ArmsWent for just £365-55 after 23 bids.

Unusual one here, from Shefford, Beds: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiards-Table-/151257027343Manufacturer is B.Hawkes of Hayes, Middx - who are likely to have made this to order (as an ad hoc requirement). Looks well constructed and faithful to the design of a narrow (SAMS Atlas) table. Assurances needed as to a sound legs and a slate base. Went for £441 after 4 bids.

I'd say "caveat emptor" for this narrow SAMS from Chichester, as to me there's much that doesn't seem quite right on it ! 1. Plenty of photos of the "innards" - but only one of the top. 2. The one of the top shows a new cloth but the picture cuts off at the half way stage.....have pockets even been installed ? You're not going to be able to play bar billiards on it if they haven't ! 3. The scoreboard and channel markings are suggestive of a narrow SAMS, but the re-clothed top looks far too wide: looks like a Burroughs and Watts. Narrow SAMS base and B & W top = an unholy alliance ! Would be interested to see Sav's comments on this, and if he feels the starting bid is set too high at £850. [edit 10/4/14 - photos of the top now added.......looks a better match but would still invite a second opinion,] www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Bar-Billiard-Table-1930s-NEW-CLOTH-ORIGINAL-BALLS-SAMS-TABLE-/151272988348This listing has ended. - no takers @ £850. Yet another narrow one, this time from Ingatestone, Nr Brentwood, Essex: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiard-Table-/161280427811Restoration project. Needs to be tastefully done, this being an early one, probably a Padmores (going by the four slots for the cues). This listing was ended by the seller because there was an error in the listing.

Very nice table, Carl, it's a traditional Jelkes table dating from the 1930s. Looks in good condition too, so worth between £600 and £1000 depending on condition of the slate, firmness of the legs in their sockets, etc.
I take it that it's home is some sort of club (a Merchant Seaman's, going by the Shipping memorabilia and the impressive 3-dialled clock with Bristol Shipping logo ?)

HI,
Make sure you transport it with the table on its side and not flat, otherwise you will likely crack the slate.

A good bit of business there, Carl. Even if you keep it at home for you and Davina to practice on, with 80% of tables charging £1 a go you will find that it will have paid for itself in less than a year. I am led to believe that the slot would be easy to convert, just needs filing to the correct size. Others may be better equipped to advise !

Thanks for that Sav, my van isnt that wide anyway so has to go on its side, dont you worry, ill be wrapping it in cotton wool to transport it home haha.
Tommo, the intention was to buy it and hire it out, all our venues charge 50p per game so maybe a little longer than a year :) Although ive just shifted my dining table and discovered a Bar Billiards Table sized space there, who knew!!
