Please look at my last post which is update week 7.
To ensure that the columns line up ( well as best I can) I have to put full stops in. Have done on each post loads of extra work :P :-X
If I copy and paste from word it just goes all over the place... :( :( :(
Can I have the idiots, explicit instructions as to how I do this :-* and I mean idiots.
Keith don't coment on the idiots bit ;) :-X :-*
Thanks Chris

HELP
Nov 30, 2011 11:21:37 GMT
Post by barbelman on Nov 30, 2011 11:21:37 GMT
Hi Chris
This is what I do....
What you have to remember is that you need to use a proportional font that is exactly the same width for ALL characters (a space is considered a character by the way). The only font available to us in ProBoards that does this is “Courier New”. So...
Click reply (or create new thread etc.)
Type your table and any other text in the ‘Message box’. When you are typing the table part of the message make sure you use the same number of spaces between each column. Obviously at the start of each line there will be (in this case) a team name of varying length so you will have to add extra spaces in some lines between the team name and the first column in order for them to line up. Don’t worry about being too precise at this stage.
When you have typed all you need to, select the text that will form the table and change the font for the selected text to “Courier New” (Use the ‘Font’ drop-down box below ‘Colors’) To check and adjust the spacing, click ‘Preview’ at the bottom of the page and you will see how your message will look on-line. DO NOT Post Reply yet!
Add or delete spaces as necessary to make the columns line up (be warned that what you see in the Message box may not look perfectly lined up until you Preview it....)
Click Preview and repeat check alignment. Repeat until you are satisfied with the look of it and then ‘Post Message’
It sounds long winded but after the first couple of time you will find it’s very quick and easy. When you want to post another updated table of the same sort then go to the old message containing the table of interest, click on modify post, SELECT the text you need too (within and INCLUDING the [f0nt=Courier New] and [/f0nt] bits) and COPY them (CntrolC)
Use the back button on your computer (your table will be in the memory) and go to reply/new message and simply PASTE (CntrlV) the table into your new message. It will stay properly spaced and you can simply edit it within the message box with all your new data. Remember that a space is exactly the same width as a letter or number so if you need to add extra numbers (e.g. a team goes from 8 to 18 points) you will need to delete one space before it to keep things aligned. Check using PREVIEW as before and then type your report underneath it as normal and then POST REPLY/MESSAGE.
Remember that you can still type it out in Word (other word processors are available!!) if you find that easier and then cut and paste it into your message box. Maintain the correct spacing in Word and you will find it easier when you change it into “Courier New” in the ProBoards message box.
Sorry this is long winded and I hope it makes sense but I’ve tried to include everything and it will be easy once you’ve done it one or twice. Honest... ;D ;D
cheers Tony

Endorsing what Tony has said, yes it does take time to get it looking perfect and yes the process is long-winded but will hopefully not be necessary when we move over to the latest ProBoards upgrade (some time next year ?)
A little tip I have for you is that you can use the Private messaging facility to send it to yourself and modify by quoting until you are entirely happy with the final product. Doesn't matter then if you press 'send' by mistake !
Cheers tommo
