First Jelkes that's been on here for a while. Absolutely magnificent (subject to sound legs and slate). Would suit the Redhill League as an addition to their stock.
Went for £460 after 30 bids. Cheapest I've seen one of that quality go for. :o

Sav First appearances deceptive...........gone off this one now as a) legs do indeed look a bit 'bandy', and b) by their own admission: Removal of the timer must considerably reflect on the value. Nice four-lane scoreboard, though................I think I had to pay £70 for mine, from B-B Ltd.

This one, a post-war Jelkes, is the genuine article, expect it to go for around £720 - £800: cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280762899650An honest admission here: "It has been in a games room until 15 months ago when it was stored. The table is still in excellent condition save for material on some internal ball channels was nibbled by a mouse when in storage." Mouse droppings, spiders webs etc easily removed with a quick vacuum. I hate meeces to pieces! :D Went for a worthy £950 after 21 bids - to a first-time buyer.

Can just imagine trying to play a shot and suddenly a mouse pops it head up out of the 100 hole !
Just had a thought, it could have been a 'siberian hamster' ;D
The Public Health Inspector and rat Manuel sees the rat scurrying past him, catches it and just after he has carefully hidden it in the biscuit tin, Mr Carnegie orders some cheese and biscuits! Basil’s world is about to collapse around him as, not knowing the biscuit tin now contains one large rodent, he proudly whips the lid of the biscuit tin right under Mr Carnegie’s nose to reveal the rat, sitting up, staring Mr Carnegie in the face… “Care for a rat!” says Basil nonchalantly to a dumbfounded Mr Carnegie who can’t quite believe what he is seeing.

Another Jelkes, and I would imagine quite a bit of history surrounding this one: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130594486199The black label on the baulk area and the circular white plastic badge seem to fix it as a former Bar Billiards Ltd Rental. (Nice four-lane scoreboard btw). Would ask more about its origin - if the hotel in the Midlands were throwing it out, did they actually own it - or does it legally belong to Ken and he's forgotten to reclaim it ? Table looks in reasonable condition until you start to dig beneath the surface......rickety legs are hinted at. And is that a brace beneath a huge crack in the slate that I detect on one of the pictures ? (No, it's an optical illusion, that's the wooden bar, none of the many pictures show the slate in closeup)Over to Mr Sav to run his fine-toothed comb over it! 8-) Went for £450 after 24 bids.

Already looked at that one Clive, yes there is a non-standard brace across the front of the slate which means odds-on it's cracked.
Full marks to the guy for saving the table and it should raise a decent price regardless
Sav
[edit] Blowing the picture up shows it is a crack as that's the slate area between the brace and the front of the slate (the picture appears forshortened and you can see the cloth on the front bar and a little of the wood filler panel in front of that).

Here's an interesting one: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200674637293Vendor seems to realise its worth judging by the starting bid, but doesn't exactly sell its best features...... It's originally a Jelkes, pre-war, with a built-in scoreboard/backboard (not a bad improvement). It's not beech but of oak, and the size mentioned is wrong, no way is it 5' by 3' - it's more likely to be 6' by 4'. And it has a working timer, albeit taking 10 pences. I can't see any minus points worth mentioning at all. EDIT - Time's up now on this one. Vendor had added a first bid requirement of £750 with apparently no takers. This message now appears: This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer availableSo we're left in doubt as to whether we'll see this one again, or whether a deal had been struck privately. :-/

Pre-war Jelkes here, also in Sittingbourne Kent (coincidence?): cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180757141788Dark-stained wood. Hinged backboard missing, otherwise not bad. Looks as if it's been looked after. Went for £560 after 15 bids. Another bargain. Purchaser is apparently known to BFG.

An authentic Jelkes, probably went into private ownership immediately on the disbandment of the Avon League: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140641676608Usual questions with a Jelkes - what is condition of legs (threads) and slate (bracing advisable when moving). Some sun damage to the wood on the left hand side could cause a slight mark down on price, easily rectified once bought by sanding down and varnishing to display the oak in all its glory. 8-) Went for £600 after 16 bids. Probably on its way down the M5 to Exeter.

Absolutely certain the slate is cracked. uneven colouring of wood. Sav

Starting to build a collection of tables now, and yes thanks for advice Sav, it will be transported sideways! Hope its ok, bodywork looks nice so hope the slate matches. I'm sure we can live with the pockets but it looks like it needs a recloth anyway!

Sav. # I too get my rubber from Masters, so good to know its the cheapest too! ;D I've gone for the 6811 cloth but will definitely consider Hainsworth for the one in the Dolphin at the moment.. I know the Hainsworth has 5% nylon but that put me off! Is there a big difference? Went & got the table. Nearly turned it down as he wouldn't budge on price. One of the legs didn't have a thread, just dowel and the mechanism was there but no timer. Only kept it 'coz we wanted Jelkes and the slate is fine. £100 to restore it still seems a bargain though, hope to get it in a pub soon :)

I used to use 6811 Tournament Gold, found and prefer Hainsworth Match. It has a shorter denser knap, is faster (if you pull the cloth tight) and needs less maintenance than Strachan in my view. Sav

Jelkes from Cheltenham: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170745970349Sav's flagship table came from Cheltenham, but I would say that this one isn't a patch on it, despite being described as 'magnificent'. Wood looks as if it has been stained to produce the mahogany effect. Must admit I prefer original oak in all its glory. Went for £1,042.00 after six separate bids. An earlier bid was retracted, no doubt by person trying to flush out the reserve price !

Think you are correct Tommo, it's certainly not mahogany as far as I can see. Eight ball returns suggests an early dark oak/beech table, all latter tables all had nine ball returns. It was just the very early tables that were a copy of the billard russe eight pocket tables that eight ball returns. These did not usually have octagonal legs ASFAIK so I would not be surprised if it has been re-legged. Doesn't have a bar-billiards plate on the front or a baulk line so no guarantee on the quality of the last refurb and cloth (+cushions?) used, looks pilly to me.
All in all a nice table, but bid prepared to spend on it.
