Burgundy cloth is an abortion in my view.
The seller clearly has no idea what he is selling as he does not know the make of the table. This is an immense warning sign for the "Fully Refurbished" description. Were the cushions re-rubbered?
However it's a good looking early Jelkes that I would be proud to own if the slate is OK.

Seriously stroppy seller this one, just insults received when I chased a reply to the normal questions. Caution recommended. Sav

This Jelkes, really pleasing to the eye, being sold from Rugby: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiards-Table-/200924320964Great shame that there is no timing mechanism (completely removed). No handle to pull reduces its potential value by £300. Went for £585 after 6 bids.

Victor Meldrew here, I'd like some more piccies of this one. Early Jelkes body (eight ball runs) but later light oak legs from the look. Suspicious that the pocket cups look dark and may be those horrible modern easidrop things. Freeplay probably means no bar present. Having said that, it's worth investigating and asking the usual questions. Sav

Early Jelkes here in dark wood, location Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-billiards-table-1-coin-operated-/300912520061?pt=UK_SportingGoods_SnookerPool_RL&hash=item460fc8ab7d£675 is being asked as a Buy-it-now price. It may well be worth that but suggest the offer is taken up of a prior view. That front left hand leg seems to have some white substance (cement paste ?) where it threads into the table insert, could have sustained some damage through mishandling. :-/ Listing now ended, presumably no takers. One offer of £550 was made which was declined.(see comments further down, Sav's post, and relisting on eBay)

On first impression, a good-looking Jelkes here, location Maldon, Essex: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-billiard-table-slate-bed-/200933524895Usual questions need to be asked about the dimensions, condition of slate, legs, etc. Could have done with more pictures showing the legs and the pocket formation from a different angle: the classic Jelkes backboard may be disguising a narrow table (the shape of the D leads me to suspect this.) Went for £511 after 6 bids. :-X :-X

Authentic Jelkes, pre-war from the round legs. Location Virginia Water, Surrey (stockbroker belt !) www.ebay.co.uk/itm/original-bar-billiards-table-/251304465540Unfortunately this table has seen better days, that cracked leg that is claimed as 'repairable' could mean a catastrophic problem with the adjuster - rather than a case of calling in the french polisher ! The cloth looks a bit pitted as well. Sad A further downer is the absence of the clockwork timer - which probably means that the bar has been removed as well. Went for £411 after 2 bids. I reckon that is just about the correct equity for this table. If buyer is prepared to spend about £600 bringing it up to scratch it would be worth a grand.

Here's a very nice Jelkes, located in someone's attic in Chichester: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiards-Table-and-equipment-Jelkes-1930s-/151110263066Looking for a minus point, and all I can come up with is that, judging by the tramlines a strange game seems to have been played on it (they should be angled differently). Someone will snap this one up and it will be their pride and joy in the snap of a finger ! Sold for £672-99 after 4 bids.

Ex-pub table from Peterborough area: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jelkes-bar-billiards-table-circa-1950s-/321206950130No, it doesn't have the big Jelkes back board, but judging by the legs I would put this one as a "Stelling Minnis conversion" - identical to the one I have at home. Has the round NBBA badge so probably has the maintenance stickers and should be a sound buy. Went for £718 after 16 bids.

What does "SAMs-ised" Jelkes mean?

Post by Chris_Sav on Oct 27, 2013 19:31:02 GMT
What does "SAMs-ised" Jelkes mean? It's something the now extinct firm of Bar Billiards Kent used to do to make Sams and Jelkes tables and slates interchangeable. In most Sams tables the slate and the front board area were mostly two separate pieces, in Jelkes tables the slate and front board were all one piece. Bar Billiards kent used to cut the jelkes slate/front board farame across where the slate and board join to make two pieces so that slates were fully interchangeable on their rented tables. Over the years this has become very muddled and not easily determined. What Tommo often refers to as Samsised is the presence of a Sams backboard on a Jelkes table, The Sams backboards were smaller cheaper and more easily made (again normally by Bar Billiards Kent). A minor cosmetic difference. Sav

Sav would have been after it as a potential AEBBA swap-out if he'd spotted it, have sent a question to the seller as I wondered what it went for but I doubt he'll answer.
