One down one to go, going to let this one run if I can.. 70+ watchers. Last one went for £850, with 2 more orders confirmed so we have a bit of work to do! A sudden surge for good quality bb tables, keeping us busy though!

Great condition standard SAMS from Newent, Glos. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-billiards-Table-/301101403311Lots of interest so far, with bidders sounding each other out beneath the reserve figure........ On the premise that apart from Fred West nothing bad has come out of Gloucestershire, this one should fetch a lot - and rightly so ! Went for a bargain £590 after 21 bids.

Standard width SAMs from Crediton, Devon: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Bar-Billiards-Table-/271411800991A good purchase for someone IMHO ! An interesting piece of history can be seen on the diamond part of the timing mechanism: Mention of C & I Osmond - a hitherto unknown "supplier of league tables" - presumably for the now-defunct Pewsey Vale league - based in Wilton, Wilts. This listing was ended by the seller because there was an error in the listing (see Joiner's comment below)

Seems a bargain buy to me.

Unlike another SAMs from Chelmsford on eBay at present, this one seems to be standard width and has a different buyer: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/bar-billiards-table-/111307963965Timing mechanism looks okay but no top part or coin box underneath. Also no pegs/mushrooms so £30 could be knocked off there ! Some damage to cloth but otherwise looks reasonable. Went for just £346 after 23 bids.

Very nice standard-width SAMS (of Hoddesdon, not Liverpool - vendor please note !) location West Chiltington (near Storrington, W.Sussex): www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Beautiful-old-Sams-brothers-fully-refurbished-bar-billiards-table-/131174853725No Tarratt Tables logo, so imagine this has been in private hands for some time. Should fetch a good price. Only thing I reckon it needs is the channels re-lining. You can buy felt strips to make this easy. I sponsored my granddaughters to do ours! This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available. I would imagine a private deal was struck on this one, probably by someone with the initials P.H.

Location: Dagenham, Essex. A "Stelling Minnis" SAMS: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/bar-billiards-table-/251538483587By this we mean one of the tables which were maintained for many years by the former Kent table operator. Not sold...... no-one prepared to open the bidding at a grand !

This one, from Maidstone, Kent almost adds up to a standard SAMS: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-billiards-table-/201112334003......the backboard and the bevelling along the legs are suggestive of French origins. So the air of a mongrel about it ! Bidding has ended on this item. 14 bids, the highest £360, but reserve not met !

What looks like a very high quality standard-width SAMS from Needwood, Staffs: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sams-Bar-Billiards-Table-/171388628802£850 rather high for a starting bid, but could still attract an interest. Has been used for 4-Pin and I can't see a D. So very likely the cloth is threadbare in that little area - unless it's been re-clothed recently enough. Stick a D on ! They cost next to nothing to make ! No bids. Re-listed this time with a lower opening bid request of £400: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sams-Bar-Billiards-Table-/171399552465? Went to a a single bid of £400. Bargain !

Standard SAMS from Ashford Kent: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BAR-BILLIARDS-TABLE-/390905802238Quote from vendor: What stands out for me here is that the wood on the top has been rubbed down. But why not finish off the job ? You could get a can of wood varnish plus a decent paintbrush for not much more than a fiver........ Went for just £295 after 6 bids.......Bargain !

Very nice standard SAMS from Stourport-on-Severn, Worcs: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sams-Bar-Billiard-Table-/181508721024Refurbisher seems to have forgotten the baulk markings and to add a leather D. Original SAM Bros 'how to play' is a good freebie, besides the other accessories. A DIY job on the wood if tastefully done could turn it into pristine. Could well be worth the Buy-it-now price. Bought for the Buy-it-now price of £750.

Good luck and hope that you land it !
If you do, I would recommend you add a D, they're quite easy to make yourself and you should find a tip on how to do it on here somewhere !

I've bowed out from assessing the eBay tables now after a stint of a couple of years, but just to say that Tarratts are selling an ex-league table here, and don't appear to have put a high reserve on it: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiards-Table-/221612089546Can endorse Tarratts as the last remaining hire operator in the country (Sussex-based) and Rod is President of the Horsham & Dist League and has an established reputation. Went for a commendable £735 after 39 bids.

What's the difference between these and the ones we use normally??

What's the difference between these and the ones we use normally?? Most tables in Sussex pubs are Tarratt rentals, and were manufactured by SAMS Brothers of Hoddesdon, Herts. Bar Billiards Ltd of Ascot supplied all the other counties and dealt in Jelkes tables including providing up to eight of their most recently renewed to All-England competitions, Opens and Finals Nights. When they ceased trading a few years ago many of these were sold privately which is how AEBBA came by the 'tournament set' and counties such as Surrey, Bucks, Berks, Oxon, Northants and Hants came to own their own stock. Kent already had their own operation (B-B Kent) going as an offshoot of B-B Ltd. So there we are - you are mostly acquainted with Jelkes, although when you come to play in the Sussex Open there is a mixture of Jelkes and SAMS........ The main difference visually is that Jelkes have round or hexagonal legs which unscrew easily from the base of the frame for ease of transport. Whereas SAMS have square legs bolted to the frame but the playing surface or 'top' can be lifted from the frame when moving. This is more convenient for Tarratts who regularly respond to a request for a 'new top' whilst leaving the frame in situ. There are also other, subtler, differences which Sav will be able to define - if pressed ! Hope this answers satisfactorily ! tommo
