Dear all
Sorry this is a bit late. There are five reason for this... 1. I'm an idiot 2. Very few Oxon players drawn together who we could put on early 3. I had to spend yesterday moving my mum's kitchen about 4. I had to have it checked by my schedule guru (thanks Nige!) 5. I'm a idiot but I may have already mentioned that... ;D
The only game involving a non-Oxon player that we couldn't squeeze in later was Ian Moss v. Barry Radford (sorry Barry!) as to do otherwise would have compromised the integrity of the draw.
Please be on time for your game because, as ever, the schedule is tight - if you cannot make please let someone know. Report to the Admin desk on arrival and please pay Pete E. any outstanding entries as soon as you arrive - thanks.
There are a couple of late withdrawals if anyone not in the draw wants to play - drop Pete a PM if you are interested.
cheers Tony

10.30am Allan Lacey v Keith Sheard
That's early for a 2nd Rd match, isn't it ? so, win or lose we will have a 4 hr wait for the next match!!
I reckon that if you are in the 1st Rd then you should play BEFORE the 2nd Rd matches, then you wouldn't have so long to wait between matches.
I know....It's to cater for the players that live a long way away! but we start 30 min's later than Opens used to start anyway, so players should just take their chances on the draw.
We have to get all the way to the Channel Islands to play a certain time, so, I'm sure entrants should be able to make 10.30am in Oxford! ;)
Rant over!!!
Now you can tell me to get back in my box and shut up! ;D
Keith :-*

I'm sorry but I find that a bit rich, Oxford complaining about playing Oxford early in the day at Oxford. :o :o
To think of all the aggro I was involved in in getting Oxford later starts for the 1st Surrey as you had such a long way to come!
Oxford's a three-hour drive for me - longer for many others so your comment 'should be able to make it by 10.30' means I would have to leave the house soon after 7am. :o :o
Channel Islands is a bad example as most arrive at least a day before and have an overnight kip ! ::)
Well done to the organisers for their efforts in setting the start times with peoples' journeys in mind - rather than the minor inconvenience of a wait between rounds - I say. :P

Rant over!!! Now you can tell me to get back in my box and shut up! ;D Keith :-* As requested - get back in your box and shut up, Keith! ;D ;D As I explained, there were very few Ox v Ox draws this time (NONE in Round one) and I thought long and hard about putting all local second round matches first but in the end I thought this was the fairest way to do it. If we didn't have to cater for people travelling then it would be a fairly straightforward process - but we do so it isn't! At least you'll be able to go home between rounds or take Lin shopping in Cowley Centre.... ;D cheers Tony PS I'll buy a pint of JS at 12.30 to make the time go quicker..... ;)

Oxford's a three-hour drive for me - longer for many others so your comment 'should be able to make it by 10.30' means I would have to leave the house soon after 7am. :o :o Tommo is obviously a very slow and careful driver if it takes him 3 hours to get to Oxford from Crawley.... ::) ....I reckon it's 2 hours from Worthing and we are at least 25 minutes further away than Crawley! :o ;D Unfortunately, the organisers will never be able to please everybody as there is always either the "long wait" or the "early start" for the players drawn first on the day, I like to get there early to settle in at the venue and meet up with the other players before I am due to play.... and score a few games as well. 8-) So Tony, if I turn up in time to score Keith's game.... PS I'll buy a pint of JS at 12.30 to make the time go quicker..... ;) Does this offer apply to me as well.... :o ;D ;D ;D

I drive a 150mph car, but even so would not expect to get to Oxford in just 2 hours. :o Where exactly do you park your helicopter? ;D According to google maps, it's 111 miles to the venue from my house..... 95% of that on Motorways so 2 hours on a Saturday morning should be pretty easy assuming there aren't too many roadworks (or it's snowing...) on the way. 8-) I usually reach Birmingham in under 3 hours from here and that's at least 60+ miles up the road from Oxford..... ;) Makes me wonder why some people buy a sports car when they only drive it at the same speed as Milko's float.... :o :P ;D ;D ;D

That's probably the crux of the matter. I probably drive at the same speed as you, but have to add on 20 minutes to get out of Crawley and 30 minutes at the other end driving round aimlessly to find the place. ::) Some people live in rural areas, would like to know for instance how long Sav would allow for the journey ??

Some people live in rural areas, would like to know for instance how long Sav would allow for the journey ?? My SavNav tells me its 150 miles to Oxford with having to travel half the circumference of the unreliable M25 and country lanes to start at this end. Now I do not have to worry about England selection etc. it's to far, costly and uncertain to warrant some seven hours with a safety margin in a car on my own for a couple of games of bar billiards. You can park in St Lukes Rd if you can find any spaces!

Not sure what Pete has arranged with the venue for food but as a back up Cowley Centre is only a short walk away with plenty of pubs, cafe's and sandwich shops for those that want a change of scenary during the day.

Keith I have arranged with the club that food will be available during the day.The bar will be open all day as well. I do hope most people support the Club who have put themselves out hopefully to please everyone. Cheers Pete

Congratulations to Phil Collins who beat Steven Sheard in the final of the Oxon Open today, Phil having beaten Nigel Senior in the semi-final, Bill Kerr in the quarter-final and, earlier in the day, knocking in the highest break (19,690) to beat Kevin Tunstall who had set a target of 18.7k. The other semi-finalist was Tony Martin and quarter-finalists were Mark Brewster, Geoff Powell and Dave Ingram. ;D
Barry Radford won the Plate Final with a 15k+ play-out to beat Bert Lovegrove, Rick Dewdney and Lee Radford the two semi-finalists.
Pauline Withey won the Ladies High Break Award with a break of 5,260 in her defeat to Mark Trafford.
Venue was good with plenty of room and most people seemed to find parking spaces... food was perhaps a bit disappointing though... tables generally good with a couple of tricky ones, many thanks to Dave Tooke and Milko who helped to set them up. 8-) ;)
A big thank you to Petee and Barbelman for all of their hard work arranging and running the Tournament.... and Dave Alder as always for supplying the tables. ;)

I would have been very upset with myself if I had left Table Nine that difficult for players to play on in an Open Tournament because it was awful from the start. When will people realise that setting tables up "level" doesn't mean that the tables will be up to the standard required to play the "basic" break shots because when the tables have settled (especially on carpet) the tables will probably play uphill, making the “break shot” difficult. That’s why I say they should always be set “slightly” downhill. Other than that it was a great day that was excellently organised by Pete & Tony. The bar staff were also very friendly with reasonable prices and “John Smiths” on offer, so I may have had one or two!! Well done Phil on winning the first Open of the year and hard luck Steven. I know Stevens very disappointed to be R/Up in yet another Tournament but he’s still proving to be a very difficult player to beat. This was a repeat of last year’s final but a different outcome this time. Keith PS By the way I lost on Table 9 in the last 16!! >:(

Only issue i had was the lack of bar staff. You had to ring a bell which was fine but it was taking ages for someone to appear. Not the organisers fault but for future years please request suitable bar staff coverage from the venue.
