Well, the combatants for the C Team Shield Final are now decided and it will be between Wallingford C and Reading C.
Reading C had already won Group B as reported earlier but Wallingford C were four points behind Wycombe C going into their final game, which happened to be against each other. A 7-3 victory was the minimum that Wallingford would go through with and after an excellent season, Wycombe were going to be hard to beat.
In the first leg at the Beech Tree in Wycombe, Wallingford came away with a 3-2 victory thanks to winning the first three games through Mike Shephard, Jimmy Robson and Gary Coupar. Wycombe hit back with wins by Miles Lawless and Mick Burgess.
By this stage of the season Wallingford C were so far in front of everyone else on aggregate that a 4-1 result would be enough to ensure a group victory for them. They were shocked in the first game at the Portcullis Club in Wallingford when the excellent Cliff Slade won 6000-3390 against Jimmy Robson against the break. The pendulum had swung back to Wycombe...... Then Wallingford got into gear and superb wins by Mike Shephard (8610), Chairman Terry Alder (13030) and Antony Ewen with a stunning 18190 left the match at the point where whoever won the last game, won the Group. A whole season comes down to one exciting game :) As often in these situations, nerves seemed to take a hand and neither Gary Coupar or Miles Lawless could get enough together to clinch the game. It ended 2040-1470 to Gary and gave Wallingford the four points they needed to draw level on points and take the Section win on a superior aggregate.
Very well done to them and back luck to High Wycombe C who have played very consistently throughout the season to put themselves so close to a group win.
As decided at this year's AGM the Final will be home and away by end of December 2012 and I will advertise the dates as soon as I know them. Good luck to both teams and indeed to everyone who has made this years C Team Shield so competitive and exciting. All the C and D teams without exception have made my job so much easier by their diligence in getting the results to me as soon as possible after the game and I am very appreciative of that. A pat on the back to you all.
The website will updated today to reflect these results.

2nd leg of the C team Shield Final at the Our Lady of Peace Club in Earley, Reading last night (16th December)
Reading C 3 Wallingford C 2
Tom Holland 9550 Mike Shephard 370 Andy Burns 1140 Terry Alder 1660 Mick Gibbons 2350 Jimmy Robson 1840 Brian Dawkins 6480 Gary Coupar 2850 Ron Cox 240 Anthony Ewen 11870
Overall Wallingford C 5 Reading C 5 - Wallingford win on aggregate by 59,660-37,350
Many congratulations to Wallingford C who retained the Inter Area Bar Billiards Association C Team Shield title last night in a very close two leg match. Reading must have felt favourites after taking two legs at Wallingford and Tom Holland consolidated their lead by winning the first at Reading against captain Mike Shephard by 9550-370. Chairman Terry Alder took the next in a dour struggle with Reading captain Andy Burns to make it 3-4 to the Oxon team. Reading then hit back again with two fine wins from Mick Gibbons and Brian Dawkins to put them 5-4 up but Wallingford's aggregate was so superior it simply came down to who won the last game between home stalwart Ron Cox and the high-scoring Anthony 'Murdock' Ewen. A tense finish to a fabulous 2 leg match. Murdock broke off with 7200 and left Ron enough time to chase but it was not to be and Murdock ended with 11870 to take the title for Wallingford C - well done both teams on a competitive game played in excellent spirit. Trophies were presented by Inter Area Treasurer Jenny Parsons and the OLOP club provided an excellent supper for all.
Now where are those entry forms for 2013...? ::) ;D
