Tommo, rummaging around in his attic, has come up with what must class as the equivalent in bar billiards of the Dead Sea Scrolls: a press cutting from 1969 showing the Sussex team of 40 years ago. The caption reads: Sussex's John Rayner greets Surrey's A.Jefferey before the inter-county bar billiards match at Southwater Cricket Club on Saturday. Sussex won a tight match 4-3 due to the success of Gordon Albury, Jim Baker, Ian Lelliott and Reg Beard. On the losing end were Colin Brown and Peter Wickersham - who received their county ties from county chairman Ralph Tarratt - and John Rayner. And sure enough there's a very young-looking and clean shaven Ian Lelliott ! I will try and get an image enhancement in case anyone wants to scan it for the Sussex website: I would imagine it would be one of the earliest records we have.

A further plethora of 'attic finds' means that I can now provide a detailed history of Sussex Interleague, County and Southern Counties competitions from the 1980's. This is the clipping from the last year Tarratt Tables' sponsored Champion-of-Pub-Champions was held. Reference was made to this elsewhere by Mark James, where it is reputed that over 1,000 bar billiards players from all over Sussex took part in this event.

I was out for a meal with Tim Peacock at the eight Bells recently and he still keeps all entertained with his lovely tales and gentle humour, and looks as good as ever although not tempted to pick up a cue competitively nowdays. Haven`t seen Tommy Walters in a few years, anither true gent.

I think I can see Alan Stempien, Mick Fairs and Mick Wright. The last one on my picture was Ray Kaveney.

Mick Fairs and Mick Wright correct so far - it so happened they were the Finalists. The others probably not known outside the Horsham/ Billingshurst Leagues.

Yes, Dave, you've actually got all the ones of which I'm absolutely certain, although the two girls on the left I believe to be Annette Cracknell and Claire Wilson.
Others who took part in the 2nd Under-23's (a competition which we ran for six years) and who haven't been mentioned so far were: Jason Brown, Ashley Dawson, Dave Francis, Andy Price, Tim Sutlieff and Wade Tipton.
I will be putting a feature on this competition eventually on the Horsham website.

These have been kindly lent to me by Tony Temple and are from the George and Dragon's heyday at the end of the 1980's, early 1990's. They will shortly be integrated into the Horsham website........... (All done 19/11/13)Firstly, Tony with Brian Rendell, Horsham Pairs Winners in 1990/91:

Next we have the Festival Cup Runners-up (to the Bell) of 1979/80, and the League Champions of successive seasons, 1991/2 and 1992/3: Having the newly-crowned Miss Horsham along each year to present the prizes was a unique and interesting entertainment !

Finally, Tony and Brian assured their place in the history books by winning the prestigious King & Barnes Open Doubles in 1989/90. This used to attract on average 48 pairs outfits from all over Sussex and across the Surrey border. It was as the title suggests a sponsored event, and the lion's share of the sponsorship was spent on magnificent trophies for the winners and runners-up. (Tupps who won it 5 years on the trot with Colin Smith once complained that the clocks were costing him a fortune in batteries !)

Following an interest shown on Sunday at the Surrey Open by one of the protagonists, I have dug out this old snap of the lineup for the 2nd Horsham Masters, held in 1990. (We were the first-ever league in Sussex incidentally to stage a 'Masters'.) So, how many of the line-up of 14 players can you name ? And can you name the pub shown in the background ? Finally, which two players (both called John) were in the starting line-up but are missing in the photo ?

OK, so to start with, Bob Toye remembered his cue, Dave Evans wore his Christmas jumper and Sleezie swiped somebodies pint whilst they were lining up for the camera......

A good test for our readers: who is the mystery man ? Clue: there are three ex-pats now playing their bar billiards in Redhill.

The Pub was the Queens Head, Bolney (private house now) Correct ! Difficult to believe now that the pub was a popular stop-off point on the main Crawley-Brighton road......We used to sweep down the hill and almost do a handbrake turn into the forecourt. Bob Toye lived a couple of doors away and we once went to a cracking birthday barbecue of his, complete with marquees and disco. Happy days !

Yep, got 'em all.
Jim Balchin has resurfaced after an absence of many years and now plays for the Reigate Ex-Services Club in the Redhill League.
I spoke to him at the Surrey Open and he recalled how Kim Wood got to the final courtesy of John Slee pegging a 10k break !

As for missing Johns, I reckon John Turner would be one but the other, well I'm undecided, could be Davie, Harvey, Martin or Miller. Apologies to any Johns I've missed.

Yep, Junkie himself - and the legendary Turner, still with us but not venturing out much nowadays.
[edit - sadly John T passed away on 26.11.2017]
