Good points on specifics, Jean, and I find no reasons to disagree on any of them.
I was purely referring to the 'bigger picture' of the Forum moving forward - it had become very static and stale IMHO.
It is a shame too when topics (like this one) get sidelined and develop into discussions about attitudes and the relationship between Members and those in authority. I don't see why you or Chrissie should have to apologise for any comments you have made in the past, you have been forthright in your views and that should be respected.
I hope the Sussex boards are soon sorted out for you, but you may have to be a little patient as Sav has said he's canvassing Staff opinions first, and it sometimes takes days to get all views in (frustrating I know). And of course at the moment he's got the rest of the AEBBA tables to refurbish which is a thankless task in itself.

This thread has now got way off topic so I will say no more. Except OPINIONS - Everyones entitled to their own RESPECT - Is a two way thing COMMUNICATION - A little goes a long way Truly inspirational and very wise words Jean. It makes me wonder if the Mods. should be appointing a female of the species on board in some context, or do they intend like some "clubs" to keep it an all male domain ? With a woman as peacemaker, some situations may have not got to where they are now, with people being forced into taking sides with bridges being burned instead of rebuilt. I appreciate the owners of this Forum may wish to bring in some improvements and in principal I do not disagree with a members only format, providing it leaves an area for Guests to post questions and does not "over egg the pudding" for folks who are not computer whiz kids and simply wish to view results/banter and competition/tournament dates. For me as a simple user in a small league I enjoy and respect the free Forum for what it is, in it's present format. Any other major proposed changes could be investigated through a simple question and answer form, even if it was to a single representative from each league or county. It is all very well stating that "we are the owners of the Forum and this is what we have decided." However it is not a Forum if there are fewer and fewer active members, and people do not post or view posts by others. There already exists a Members club class, where those members may chat amongst themselves. As most Counties have there own websites, this Forum has to be different and unique, and the fact is that it can be viewed by non members. If this facility is removed, it will cause profound changes, for better or worse, which may not be immediately clear during the following few months. I doubt if a decision, if once made, would be reversed if it was later deemed to be a mistake. As I said in an earlier post - A tough call for those in charge.

Forming - storming - norming - performing Tuckmans stages of group development.
Yes I may digress on a thread that was started to discuss members only. My reason for digressing is that this thread has engaged people and they are forming as a group to reach an outcome whatever that may be. The problems with emails/posts is that we have no direct dialogue. In direct dialogue the following applies body language which counts for 55% of how we view a person, no intonation of voice which counts for 37%, we just have 'words' which counts for little in a conversation as to how we view it and if we have not engaged because of body language or intonation we actually don't even listen. On here it is all we have, the written word. The written word without the above can be misinterpret ted.
Jean is totally right to make her post and as Norman said inspirational and highly valued.
I think the thread is mixed up with views on members only and views on collecting members views which I think Tommo would say, but maybe what the thread has allowed is a few of the people to start performing by expressing why they don't post. Which is a good thing.
Promise not to use such stuff again on the Bar Billiards site :o Well maybe not ::)

Promise not to use such stuff again on the Bar Billiards site :o Well maybe not ::) Ah those Supervisory and Management courses...public speaking, concentrate on one member of the audience and don't fidget. We had to each give a twenty-minute speech on a subject we were well-versed on, and use a slide projector. Mine was called "my career as a stuntman" and was a light-hearted account of all the accidents I'd had on bicycle, scooter and in cars. (Falling asleep and going over the handlebars into the back of a van, steering through a herd of cows late at night, you know the sort of stuff). Best presentation was by a chap who explained how he made his own ice-cream. :-/ Had us all spellbound. 8-)

You have my sympathies Chris, I was not a fan of the weekly 'pep talk' meetings I had to endure towards the end....sitting there thinking 'he's talking output and I'm being held here while I could be getting on with the job'. And they were fond of moving the goalposts. >:(

Hi Members only fans
Not too enthused by members only, still think that floating players and randon surfers should still be able to view certain areas like rules, venues in your area, tips and help, banter, result cards, competions info etc....oops i think thats covered everything ::) dont really see why access needs to be restricted at all :-*

I saw on the site this morning that a decision has been taken with regards to this debate. It’s one that I agree with totally. But I noticed that comments were still invited, so I would like to add mine.
I measured up the benefits of the original proposal (only members viewing) against the drawbacks. I found many drawbacks, the main one being that this forum was founded on the principle of giving everyone access to useful information and raising the status of our game. That’s its reason for being and it’s overwhelmingly main objective and I believe any change to a member’s only setup compromises that significantly. I know that’s invoking my personal view and it’s not meant to undermine the debate (being who I am and all). But I am who I am and that’s why I did what I did. It would be wrong of me to not mention that during this debate.
As for the benefits of such a switch, I’m afraid I found zero, but I’m all too aware something must have triggered it, so I’ll trust in the staff’s judgement there. I know it would be nice to see “exactly” who is looking at the forum at any given time, rather than just a large number of unknowns. But I fail to see how this benefits the forum in the long run as I can’t see how the information would be used to make improvements. Do correct me if I’m wrong.
As for the future, I am in favour of whatever it takes to keep this forum open to as many people as possible and free. I believe the model currently in place achieves this, with only members being able to post, but everyone being able to view the majority of the forum. I see no reason to switch from that model and indeed actually prefer it to a “free for all” where anyone with an internet connection can post on anything. Been there, done that, was messy, very, very messy! But our game does need to be careful we don’t block off any users, and circumstances sometimes mandate that users can’t log in certain situations (for example a corporate ICT policy).
That’s it from me. You will notice above that I said “our game”. A few of you might be pleased to know that I’m back.
And I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again since we are debating forum issues. Thank you to all the staff for all that you have done, and all that you will do in the future. You’ve done more than I ever could, and you have my eternal gratitude.
