Anyone else interested in Demographics ? Over the past week whilst housebound I've been occupying myself with comparing the results of the 2001 and 2011 censuses with those of the 1991 census. For reasons best known to the previous government the 2001 figures were never properly released to the public. The findings are sometimes surprising, sometimes alarming. My investigations have prompted me to ask the following questions: a) What was the current population of the UK in 2011, compared with 1991 and 2001 ? b) Looking at England (having taken the lion's share), where has all this additional population been housed ? Specifically, - Which counties and regions have the highest rate of growth ?
- How has London grown in the last 20 years ?
- Which other cities have had the biggest lump of population added ?
- What are now the largest towns and cities in England (in descending order) ?
Answers to follow........... Figures for 2001 and 2011 taken from the following website:www.guardian.co.uk/uk/datablog/interactive/2012/jul/16/census-2011-uk-map-data

a) What was the current population of the UK in 2011, compared with 1991 and 2001 ? Okay, the answers....... There are now 62 million people living in the UK: 1,800,000 in Northern Ireland; 3,000,000 in Wales; 5,194,000 in Scotland; and 52,907,700 in England. England's population is up 7.2% on that of 2001 (49,338,100) - an increase of 3,569,000 persons in ten years (= more than the entire population of Wales !) In 1991 there were 47,837,300 people. So - where have all these 3 and a half million people been fitted in ? London alone has taken 851,600 of them. to be continued.........

- Which counties and regions have the highest rate of growth ?
Remember we said England's population had grown by 7.2% since 2001.....Taking that as the norm, these are the counties that match or exceed that growth: CAMBRIDGESHIRE 13% GREATER LONDON 11.6% WILTSHIRE 10.9% LEICESTERSHIRE 9.7% NORTHAMPTONSHIRE 9.7% KENT 9.3% BUCKINGHAMSHIRE 9% SUFFOLK 8.7% LINCOLNSHIRE 8.5% BEDFORDSHIRE 8.3% EAST SUSSEX 7.7% HERTFORDSHIRE 7.7% OXFORDSHIRE 7.7% AVON 7.6% NORFOLK 7.4% WARWICKSHIRE 7.4% BERKSHIRE 7.3% DORSET 7.3% HAMPSHIRE 7.3% NOTTINGHAMSHIRE 7.2% Now for the most notable increases amongst the regions..... Tower Hamlets up 26% Newham up 23% Manchester up 19% Leicester up 17% Milton Keynes up 17% Peterborough up 17% Swindon up 16% Slough up 16% Boston up 16% Ashford up 15% Uttlesford (= Stansted) up 15% Corby up 15%

Ploughing on then,
[/li][li]How has London grown in the last 20 years ?
As stated already, London (pop: 8,174,100) alone has taken 851,600 of the 3 and a half million extra people from 2001. It has also seen a 20-year rise of 1,379,700. Nearly every London Borough has swelled at the rate of 12%.
Newham has seen a population increase of 58,600 since 2001; Tower Hamlets has increased by 53,000 in the same period; and Brent has increased by 41,600.
Like a sizeable town has been added to each! :o
These additional boroughs have each had 30,000 or more added to their population: Hackney Hounslow Greenwich Redbridge Barnet Waltham Forest Wandsworth Enfield Haringey Southwark Ealing
[/li][li]Which other cities have had the biggest lump of population added ?
Birmingham (984,600) 1,073,000 + 88,400 Manchester (422,900) 503,100 + 80,200 Bradford (470,800) 522,500 + 51,700 Leicester (282,800) 329,900 + 47,100 Sheffield (513,100) 552,700 + 39,600 Bristol (390,000) 428,200 + 38,200 Nottingham (268,900) 305,700 + 36,800 Milton Keynes (212,700) 248,800 + 36,100 Leeds (715,600) 751,500 + 35,900 Swindon (180,100) 209,200 + 29,100
(2001 figure in brackets)
Look at those figures for Birmingham and Manchester.....scary ! :o

Assessing the distribution of Wales's 3 million population provided a different and interesting sort of challenge: The figures themselves are pretty unexceptional, 2,881,700 in 1991, 2,910,200 in 2001 and 3,063,200 at the 2011 census; No growth rate above 7% except in Pembrokeshire, Bridgend (both 8.2%) and Cardiff itself 11.2%. And biggest cities towns thus (column 1-1991; col.2-2001; col.3-2011): Cardiff 287200 310100 346100 Swansea 186600 223500 239000 Newport 127000 137600 145700 Neath & Port Talbot 176600 134400 139800 Bridgend/Ogwr) 137100 128700 139200 Wrexham Maelor 117000 128500 134800
What I did find fascinating was the difficulty in reconciling the figures from 2001 and 2011 against 1991 when the county boundaries were completely different (8 new counties Clwyd, Dyfed, Gwent, Gwynedd, Powys and Mid-, South and West Glamorgan had replaced the 12 traditional counties in 1974). Pretty neat, you might think, combining Anglesey, Caernarvon and Merioneth into Gwynedd, Denbigh and Flint into Clwyd, Brecknock, Radnor and Montgomery into Powys, Cardigan, Carmarthen and Pembroke into Dyfed and then dividing the heavily-populated Glamorgan into three - a pretty logical and convenient arrangement ! But then, it all changed again with the Local Government of Wales Act of 1994. The Act established, from 1 April 1996, twenty-two new unitary authority areas, to be known as 'counties' or 'county boroughs', and abolished the eight local government counties (along with their 37 districts) that had been formed in 1974 and which are now still recognised as 'Preserved Counties'. But effectively there are now 22 counties, single-tier authorities, made up thus:
LOST PICTURE
Talk about make things complicated !

Main points as I find them:
1. The population of England and Wales grew by more than 3.5 million (6.3%) since the last census in 2011, when it was 56,075,912. The figure now is 59,597,300.
2. Breakdown by Regions
England North East 2,647,100 North West 7,417,300 Yorkshire/Humber 5,480,800 East Midlands 4,880,200 West Midlands 5,950,800 East of England 6,334,500 Greater London 8,799,800 South East 9,278,100 South West 5,701,200

- Which counties and regions have the highest rate of growth ?
- How has London grown in the last 20 years ?
- Which other cities have had the biggest lump of population added ?
- What are now the largest towns and cities in England (in descending order) ?
So, will attempt to address the above, which in turn could shed some light on where the illegals arriving by boat have been packed on to (the assumption here is that they would have opted to have claimed state benefits - thus being 'processed' - rather than disappearing into the system). 1. London's population has increased by 625,700 in a ten-year period, having added an amazing TWO MILLION people since 1991. 2. Of the other major cities, the increases in Sheffield and Liverpool have been negligible, but Birmingham has increased by 150k and Leeds, Manchester, Bristol and Milton Keynes all by 100k and Leicester by 90k. Lower down the list, Peterborough has added 60k and was recently rated Number One in the "Crap Towns" publication (a shame as it is a city with a beautiful cathedral). A noticeable trend in the last ten years has been a decrease in population in the North-east (Eg Sunderland, Gateshead) but a resurgence in Greater Manchester (Wigan, Bolton, Salford to name but three) - improvements to the inner city no doubt having a bearing. 3. There has not been a great deal of movement in the top 50 population list, apart from Manchester overtaking Bradford and Milton Keynes moving up from 27 to 19th. The new town, originally planned for a 250k capacity, is now hurtling towards 300k. The most alarming case for me is that of Leeds. When I first became interested in populations back in the 1960's, my AA Handbook listed London at 8.2 million, Birmingham at 1 million, Liverpool and Manchester at 700k each and Leeds and Sheffield at 500k each. Whereas Liverpool and Manchester saw inner-city de-population, Leeds at 800k is now firmly established as the "Third City" and if the current trend continues could see its population top a million by mid-century.
