Well, less than a week now and it's upon us. Carl has everything under control, but I have a couple of final points for consideration - by way of crossing the eyes and dotting the tees if you like. ;D 1. Public address system. If you have one, great - makes life easy for the Controller. If not, no worries, apart from how you ensure all competitors are at their table and ready to start - all together - at the allotted time. Best idea is to make the requirement that all players check in with you at the Admin Desk 15 minutes before they are due to start, so that you 'have them on standby'.2. Appoint a "Runner". You will find it useful to appoint a diligent person to run round and get the scores/results after each set of matches is played. The system which seems to work at all opens is for simple result slips to be given out (by your Runner) as the games start. Something like this: Player 1 | Game 1 | Game 2 | Total | Player 2 | Game 1 | Game 2 | Total |
It is then up to the scorer at each table to fill in the slips, and up to the Runner to collect and return them to the Admin Desk. Sorry if I did not need to make any mention of this, but "belt and braces" and all that! ;D ;D tommo If you aren't able to get a runner you could do what they do in the "World Championships" in Jersey and that is for the first player that checks in to be given the score sheet/slip with both players names on it and the table number they will be on and for the winner to return it to the desk straight away. Ditto!

Ditto! Thanks for the points of concern! Again, much appreciated! I'll try to answer from the top 1. We don't have a public address system unfortunately, but the venue is small enough to shout loudly (any Brian Blessed impressionists are most welcome) Only joking, myself and a few of us from Norwich will be doing the running, but this is the reason why I asked on the entry forms for phone numbers, I have most numbers who are playing so we should be ok, also a copy of the schedule timings will be given out to all players when they arrive. Just need a bit of drunken common sense..... :-/ 2. There should be score sheets at every table with names already filled in so the refs will just need to make sure they have the correct people playing. After the game has been played, the score sheet will be either given to the Winner of that game, or the ref will take the score sheet to the admin desk himself. Erm, is that everything? Please let me know if you think of more, thanks Carl

lol we will all (or at least I will) need more than belt and braces if I'm gonna be a runner, trust me that the sight of me doing a Penguins walk with my trousers around my ankles is not a nice sight and they fall down if i start running. Did anyone ever decide how a drawn match would be decided? I don't think we need any more runners Dave, but we will need a few more 4-pinners to ref some games, so we may have to employ some 4-pin players to help out in that respect, there will be a copy of the rules at each table just in case there is any confusion. To decide a drawn 2 legs game? Hopefully it won't come to that but, the fairest (and quickest) way of doing it will be having a final shot knock out as per rule 14 (The last ball on the table shall be played from the centre of the 'D', the 10, 20 and 30 point holes are covered (score board is lowered) and the pegs covering the 50 point holes are placed into their respective holes, the last ball is then played into any remaining uncovered hole, off any cushion.)

Really looking forward to playing some funny billiards this weekend ;D and many thanks and congratulations to Carl and his helpers for getting this off the ground and organising it all so well.
Be good to meet you all and get totally embarrassed by our ineptitude at 4 pin.... :'( ;D ;D
cheers Tony

I cant see where 4 pin is too much different from the poor mans ;) 3 pin game apart from the break shot is a little harder hence why to us a break over a thousand is good
I hope it is "funny billiards" I cant take the game too seriously, its better played after a few pints :D

I cant see where 4 pin is too much different from the poor mans ;) 3 pin game apart from the break shot is a little harder hence why to us a break over a thousand is good I hope it is "funny billiards" I cant take the game too seriously, its better played after a few pints :D They're as different as chalk from cheese, Dave. You're right that the hazards to prevent the double 50 hole break shot restrict the potential to score dramatically, say an average 6000 point game at 3-pin might become 1500 at 4-pin. But there's more to it than that. The top 3-Pin players have mastered the art of playing a 50 and 100 (what we call the Oxford split) to get the balls back to the break position straight away after leaving the one-up. This opens up the potential to play out the entire clock, achieving perfection with a combination of three shots - and doubles their score in the process. 4-Pin also removes that facility, as there is a red mushroom guarding entry to the 100 hole. So I am as fascinated as you are as to how well these top 3-pinners will cope with having their favourite facility removed ! ;) Funny billiards sounds good to me ! LOL

lol well I guess I shouldn't give any of our secrets away then ;) in 4 pin most of the shots are played off the top and back into the 200, 100 and 50 holes, that little red mushroom gaurding the 100 hole is a pain in the ass though. On a home table that players know a 70 break (white in the 50 and red in the 10) is the normal although some smart players just play the red in the 10 leaving the white up so they can go in off with the red on the next shot for 100, on some tables 150 break is possible playing the white (cue ball) off the side into the 50 while the red goes up into the corner and back into the oppisite 50, but in the Open as no one will know the tables it will be interesting to see how how the break shot pans out. We aften chuckle before a league game as we watch players practise the break, as often in 4 pins games the only break shot is the first shot of the game

Right I'm off for an xray and then maybe some more physio, they have now decided that I may have cracked my collar bone back in October last year and it hasn't healed correctly, its only taken them 6 months to think of that, pitty they didn't xray it at the time

BTW Carl do you still want me to try and pinch some mushrooms? Yes please Dave that would be fantastic if you could! Everyone here is asking and coming to the same conclusions as everyone on the forums too, 3 pinners know the tables and 4 pinners know the 4 pin game, so its going to be really interesting for all of us! But like Dave says, just hope everyone has some good fun whilst we're playing and we don't all take it too seriously, well not until we start getting to the QFs anyway haha. Getting very excited about it all now! the time has flown in the last few weeks and now its all upon us!!! 2 days to go!! We're putting the beer in the Hall tonight, it seems very real now, and i'm not just taking about the ale!!! See you all on Saturday!!!

Not sure what time I'll be there now or if I will even make it, my intentions were to travel up by train Saturday Morning leaving Sudbury just before 7-30 but now it seems the trains cant find their was to Norwich on Saturday so its now a bus from Ipswich to Norwich :) I feel travel sick already/ The time table says we should arrive at Norwich station around 10-15 so a slow walk to the venue, if it's not peeing down should in theory see us there by 10-45. what time does the bar open :d
Glad to hear you're setting the ale up tonight, gives it some time to settle
