People have got away with wearing a tie instead of the dicky-bow in the past, so the dress code isn't completely unwaiving.

How can you enforce this or put a Proposal in to change it when there's NOTHING written in the AEBBA rules to say what dress code you should wear anyway!
In my opinion you should not have to dress up like a stuffed Xmas turkey just to play bar billiards in an individual event, maybe only for your Country in a team event.

Put a proposal through at the AGM! I know there were people talking about the dress code at the weekend with opinions split evenly for/against! Yes, there was some discussion about this in Jersey and opinions on the subject were varied. :-/ From my experience in the last couple of years, it seems that a lot of players who take part in the Grand Prix have only worn the waistcoat and dickey bow for the picture and then either take them off completely or leave them undone while they are playing.... which does seem to defeat the object of insisting that players wear them to start with really. ::) I will admit that I am one of the "guilty" parties of having done this myself.... for the simple reason that I find it very hard to be comfortable when I feel as if I am wearing a straightjacket.... although I suppose the simple answer to that for me would be to either find a bigger waistcoat or lose some weight!! :-[ ;D ;D I know that Ian has very strong opinions on this and respect his view on this subject.... as he has often told me it is a pub game and even when you play for the England Team you only have to wear a tee shirt and black trousers - which is a big step for Ian to have to take in itself! :o ;D As a matter of interest..... please could somebody show me which AEBBA Rule covers the dress code for the Grand Prix?? I have just looked through the Rules on the AEBBA Website but couldn't see anything..... ??? ::) :-/

Will check with Bill but logistically think may be a no as dress code could be a problem.

In these days of digital photography and photoshop, surely the answer is Yes ;D If he does not want to dress up and someone else wishes to see him dressed up, they can edit the photos themselves.
Fantastic at Jersey to see recognition for a bright new star and decent and humble bloke who won the best newcomer prize. I met him again at the Airport and he was still over the moon with his weekend.
Just goes to show that we in the Bar Billiards community should accept and welcome everyone as they are, regardless of social standing, colour or creed (or preferred dress code) ;D

A very healthy debate going on here 8-)
I have to throw in my two pounds worth here just to even up the balance of the debate.
Having been the Secretary for the last six years ??? Yes 6 years ;) :D wow!! how time fly's when your world is so full of enjoyment ;D ;D I have grown to appreciate the formality of such a highly contested tournament.
The GRAND PRIX is the echelon of our sport, It is the Cream of the crop in terms of National Tournament stature. It is the only tournament where the years top 16 players battle it out to be crowned GRAND PRIX CHAMPION, How cool is that 8-)
We need to keep some sort of decorum and grace in Bar Billiards. It maybe that some players never fall out of the top 16 and are thereby growing tired of wearing the "Penguin" Suit.
A few years ago I somehow managed to reach those dizzy heights to be invited to play in the GRAND PRIX. For me it was a great privilege and honor to play against the WORLDS best. I was immensely proud to wear my "Penguin" suit(Not been there since) and just for the record, I do wear 'trousers' at the GRAND PRIX Tournament.
It is such a shame when someone is unable to attend because of the 'dress code'
The 'GRAND PRIX' Should remain as is. Formal with 'dress code'

Guys
We are all have different feelings re dress code why should anyone impose anything re dress in Bar Billiards. More importantly those mentioned are totally dedicated players. So Ian and posibly Bill can't play as they may not wear a suit and tie/bow tie.??? Sorry not fair where is the AEBBA Rule re this? It may be there but not going to read it to find out.
Ian supports every open pays his entry fee why should he not enter?? He got the points and deserves to.
Bill always does your raffle every game or open he can, Why should he be discounted if he does not want to wear a suit. Although we do not know that yet.
Ian/Bill not saying you can't re below but...
What if they don't have one? Do all men have one? Is it their priority in their lifestyle or this economic climate?
My first year back I was suddenly asked to play in the Ladies as they were short, someone had not turned up, I was not in dress code. To be honest you all know I changed out after the photo which I hated, in those I qualified for.
Guys... change is always hard, it is about our mindset and default position. Don't let your default position exclude people over a matter of dress.
What will make a great Grand Prix is those playing that have earnt the right to!!!

I too have mixed views on this. Whilst I respect AEBBASec's sentiment on the tradition of the event, there is also (like Stormin') something of the rebel in me. The one and only year I was privileged to compete, I got away with wearing an ordinary tie (Milko too) but (like BBW now ;D) it was a very tight squeeze to get into my old work suit and waistcoat that I hadn't had to wear for several months. (Nowadays sadly its only outing seems to be for funerals).
I just think it's a great shame for Ian not to be able to take part and it devalues the competition not making allowances for him. Also, it's not the first time he has been forced to decline. What about 'smart casual' as the dress code for Ian and Bill ? I don't think they'd look too out of place in a carefully choreographed line-up photo.

As a comparison, when I played county pool they also imposed a dress code of shirt and trousers which I always assumed was so that each team looked smart and were in matching "uniform". Although I know I will feel proud stood having my photo taken in the brand new shirt I will buy.. it for me will be more because im well chuffed to have qualified I don't particularly feel comfy in a shirt, in fact I usually find they restrict movement and that's my main reason aside from being pretty sure I don't own a white shirt anymore that I would be happier if I didn't have to wear a specific set of clothes.

WHO?? and my personal opinion on the (unofficial as far as I can see) dress code follows young Chrissie, its the people that matter, not what they wear, Ian & Bill make a stand, there are plenty on here to back you up 8-)

I think the times they are a changing. I am one of those who does like to wear a waistcoat and Bow tie for our flagship event but I am open to change. It is nice to see everyone looking smart for a change ;D but I would also like to see the top 16 players there and not have to start going down the list of reserves. We understand that any Channel Island players may not be able to attend because of the cost/work commitments etc. Let`s relax the penguin suit, but I would still insist that trousers be worn though ;)
These leaves the question.....what the f*** am I going to do with all my waistcoats :-X ??? :o :-/
By the way, I will be attending ;D

Genuine question based on what I've been able to find in the wardrobe - would a leather waistcoast be acceptable?

I have also noticed that if one person pulls out of the original 16 Tom will be in MY group, so I will be looking for revenge because I've played him twice and never beaten him.....bring it on! ;D
