Will the Mill grind out a result tonight - or will we get trampled by the Dun Horse - as we were by the Bull a fortnight ago ?

Will the Mill grind out a result tonight ? The Mill ground out the result..... Mill House | | Dun Horse A | | Mick Holmwood | 1330 | John Lear | 280 | Margo Thompson | 970 | Paul Jobbins | 1090 | Clive Thompson | 2420 | Ian Giffen | 820 | Mick Holmwood | 2110 | John Lear | 940 | Margo Thompson | BP | Paul Jobbins | 1070 | Clive Thompson | 1400 | Graham Sparksman | 990 | Result | 4 | Result | 2 |
Entertaining evening, no-one able to master the break tonight ! Margo was unlucky, losing the first on the last ball and the second with a BP shortly before the bar when leading. Sparky should have won against me, had me by the short and curlies but the break shot letting him down at the vital moment. Good to see everyone joining in a 3-way friendly doubles afterwards. Good luck to our sporting opponents for the rest of the season !

Result card for The Bull v The Malt Shovel
Colin Southouse 1880 (break 1320) v Steve Hopkins 2200 Gareth Dell 1640 v Jim Greenstead 2010 Chris Haynes 2700 v Sam Jones 930 Colin Southouse 2180 (break 1270) v Steve Hopkins 970 Gareth Dell 2950 v Jim Greenstead 2000 (break 1070) Chris Haynes 1410 v Stu Carruthers 1620
result 3-3 draw
Three breaks over 1k at the bull tonight, after a shakey start the bull were seeing red going 2-0 down but after a great recovery with 3 on the bounce the match was saved and a draw was a fair result tonight. Looks like foxy is taking a shine to 4 pin with a nice 1070 break

Good night last night, some good play all round Mr Mike showed his skill at cutting balls into the high value holes, but very strange nobody managed to get the break so 3 played and on 3 different types of table. Half term report for the Dun Horse tried hard but need to do better in the second half Happy

looks like your 4 pin league is going well, glad you seemed to have found that the 4 pin game is more entertaining and not won and lost on who wins the break :-P
Let us know when you feel you're good enough to offer us Suffolk guys and gals a game :)

I should add, as Tommo has quite rightly said, the Sudbury rules have been developed over a long period of time, our rules are played by Norwich with the exception of the last ball rule. In Sudbury the last ball is played of any cushion or cushions into ANY hole, that has been the Sudbury rule from before I started playing nearly 40 years ago and it is one rule we will NEVER change. The Sudbury league is a very successful and extremely friendly league and there has never been the need for reams of rules, we always find common sense prevails.

Everyone wants to take us on ! Bear in mind we are only newly-formed, and only really as a diversion during the summer.
We will be tested to our limits with an "Inter-league" match vs Eastbourne on 28th August: Has anything come of the proposed Inter-County challenge Norfolk v Suffolk ?
As of September we in Sussex will be returning to 3-Pin. I hope I can remember how to play it.
So far I have thoroughly enjoyed being involved in something different. There is much to be said for it.
Have already made a note in my diary for 22/23 March 2014 for the 2nd 4-Pin Open. Looking forward to it.

If only I could do more when I have the break I would be a bit happier with it.

Have a word with Alasdair who plays for the Bay Horse in Sudbury, I've been popping in there some evenings on the way home from work and Sunday lunch times to be trashed on more than one occasion by him. He normally starts with the 450 break shot and then continues on by knocking in 150 break shots while I happily drink my beer. He has yet to make it round the score board and get over 9990 but he consistently accumulates scores in the 6 thousands while I'm happy to finish with half, I guess that's the beauty of knowing your table

From what I understand Carl from Norwich has been very busy with other things and taking on the tractor boys is a little low on his priority list at the moment which we all understand. I know Chris C from our happy gang has been chatting to Carl regarding next years 4 pin open in Suffolk and after our next committee meeting on the 13th of August we should be able to post some news and details

Hi Crawley 4-Pin fans,
The points shared tonight in a good struggle at the Malt Shovel, their last-but-one before the table goes........
Jim Greensted 1240, Mick Holmwood 1270 (The players neck and neck throughout, the Fox failing to pot the red at the decisive time allowing Mr Mike to win with the last ball ) Sam Jones 1190, Margo Thompson 540 (This played at the end after the first game was declared a void. Sam had enough to win but played the last ball straight up the table which we didn't think he was allowed to do. As no-one was absolutely sure and not having a set of rules to hand we thought the best way forward was for a re-rack. Have since checked the rules back home and Sam was okay provided he didn't play straight into a hole which I don't think he did. So sorry Sam, but at least the result was the same anyway...) Stu Carruthers 1290, Clive Thompson 980 (Stu's game included a fine break of 790, Sam had earlier recorded an 840) Stephen Hopkins 830, Mick Holmwood 1070 (another last-baller, Hoppo having a chance to win but Mr Mike potting the last ball off the side cush for 20 instead) Sam Jones 1950, Margo Thompson 980 (Margo tried her best but Sam pulled off several really bold shots into the high-scoring pockets) Stu Carruthers 990, Clive Thompson 1280 (Stu played skilfully to leave himself a chance at the end, but his shot didn't come off, which allowed tommo to edge clear)
Result: Malt Shovel 3 Mill House 3 amidst some good laughs.
Updates tomorrow may have to wait a bit as tommo will be up in Hertfordshire attending his cousin's funeral.

we may have lost the match but we had a great night & The Bull are hard to beat on their table, 2 1K breaks & a couple just short of it. Graham battled hard against gandalf & almost got the better of him in round 2 as it came down to Colin potting the last ball for the win. I gave Gareth a run for his money but he kept plugging away. Paul did well against Chris & stayed out in front all the way in the first but Chris got his eye in on the second. Great pub and some tasty Pizza.

Margo in contest with Chris as to who could lose the most.......she almost humbled Gareth in the last frame but BP'd when in touch with 1k on the board and the bar due; However Chris shaded it in frame four, first spilling 800 (2nd 400-red just clipping the black on the way in); then 700 lost, finally the 710 he had on the board at the end. Good fun tonight with the Eastbourne lads, who have probably won the League with this result.

Also a very close 5th game between Sparky & Hoppo with good play from both. A very sporting evening with both sides encouraging each other.

A good contest played amongst friends......Tony helped us out by playing the last match as Margo felt she had lost too many: his first words being "how do you play this game ?" You should have seen the look of glee on Ian's face when he won the toss and put Tony in to bat ! Ian's experience told in game 1 with some good break routines, but Tony had sorted out his game for the return leg. The last two frames were very tight, Sk!ppy winning on the last ball, and Sparky all but overturning a 400 deficit after the bar with some well considered pullback attempts at the 200. So that concludes the season for these two teams, and general consensus of opinion was that it was enjoyable, a good addition to the calendar. The Dun Horse A and the Mill House teams line up........ Hi All
Result from last night was The Malt Shovel 4 The Bull 2. A very entertaining evening with the The Bull taking time to adapt to the table. The Malt Shovel raced into a 4 nil lead and then Gandalf played a captains innings and one the next to get the point they needed to win the league. In the last Chris sunk the 200 to win the match and deny The Malt Shovel the runners up slot.
Clive and Margo came down to present the trophies and everyone thanked Clive for an enjoyable tournament. Well done to The Bull for winning and Mill House for finishing runners up.

Hi Hoppo
Great final night at the Malt Shovel, 4 pin seems to be a lot less serious and a lot more enjoyable than the New version
Though the Supreme table was the slowest we have ever played, once we got used to it we gave your players a fair game. Sam is having it removed shortly but may replace it at a later date if there is a demand for it... up to you on that one.
Many thanks to Sam for the Chicken bits and chips which we weren't expecting

Result from last night was The Malt Shovel 4 The Bull 2. A very entertaining evening ..........Looking forward to next season already!!!! Thanks Steve and Colin for the write-ups on last night. What a good match, which took the league right to the wire, the Malt only missing out on runners-up due to Chris sinking the last 200 after Steve had fought bravely and led throughout. Could not believe our eyes when the Malt went 4 - nil up, the terms "hitting a bull's ar$e with a shovel" seemed apt in the circumstances. But the visitors were playing for their pride and managed to salvage it in the last two games. Margo and I both enjoyed our evening immensely, including a sort of three-way banter. Mein host Sam served up some tasty grub - unexpected as mentioned already, and I think he too was taken with the atmosphere that a good bar billiards match can provide. We shall await to see what develops. My next entry will be confirmation of the Final Table and two photos, but just to say firstly we are in hope of expanding this to two divisions of four next year (one extra team have already confirmed their interest); and secondly to confirm that the Inter-league challenge will take place in a fortnight's time (28th Aug) at the Bull, match commencing 7.30pm. Crawley team: Paul Jobbins (capt), Ian Giffen, Stuart Carruthers, Sam Jones, Steve Hopkins Mick Holmwood and Yours truly. tommo
