Here is a quiz to get your teeth into!

A maximum of 3 answers per 4 hour period please.

1. Four friends all live at addresses on a perfectly straight road. In alphabetical order. Tony’s house is 85m from Bob’s house. Vince’s house is 70m from Sue’s, and Tony’s is 22m nearer to Vince’s than it is to Sue’s. How far apart do Bob and Vince live?

2. A certain number is connected to binary notation, its digits reversed, and then converted back into decimal notation again to give the number 131. What was the original number?

3. The 15 children at Zoe’s party were given a bag containing 90 sweets. They shared them out so that each girl got seven sweets and each boy got five, except for birthday girl Zoe who took an extra three sweets, How many boys did Zoe invite to her party.

4. What is the next number is the series: 110 , 54, 26, 12?

5. Dacia is making her usual 19 mile journey to work down the motorway. Due to roadworks she crawls along part of the way at 20mph and averages the rest at 60mph. If the journey takes her 27 minutes, how much of the motorway was covered by roadworks?

6. What is the next number in the series: 2, 12, 82, 572?

7. One-third of a certain number is six times more than a quarter of five less than that certain number. what was that certain number?

8. Last week Beth went on a crash diet to lose some weight quickly. On Monday, she ate 40 per cent fewer calories than her average daily amount. On Tuesday, she managed 300 calories fewer than the day before, and on Wednesday she consumed only two thirds of the previous day’s calorie intake. If she has consumed food containing a total of 4,300 calories over those three days, what was Beth’s average daily calorie intake before she cut down?

9. What is the next number in the series 22,549; 3,757; 625; 103?

10. Jesse Deuce and Cyril Smash have been playing tennis for a week. If Jesse Deuce had won five less sets, he would have won one fifth as many sets as Cyril Smash. If Cyril had won fifteen fewer sets, he would have won three times as many sets than Jesse. How many sets did Jesse Deuce win?

11. Gary, Kara, Cheryl and David receive their results for their drama exam. The average of Gary’s and Kara’s marks is 50; Kara and Cheryl’s marks, 75; and Cheryl and David’s marks, 70. With Gary getting two thirds of Kara’s mark, and the pass mark being 58 per cent, who failed?

12. The number of sandwiches prepared by Chef Daniel since, and including, Thursday halved each day. If he had prepared a total of 405 sandwiches by the end of Sunday, how many did he make on Saturday?

13. Bill and Rachel have each been given the same number of wedding anniversary gifts. Bill unwraps eight of his, leaving Rachel with three times as many gifts to unwrap as Bill has. How many presents did they have between them to begin with?

14. Three consecutive off numbers are multiplied together to give 3,315. What are the three numbers?

15. In Jill’s piggy bank there are 48 coins, either 20p or 50p pieces. If the total of the money is £17.50, how many 20p pieces does Jill have?

16. What is the next number in the series; 10, 85, 460, 2335?

15) I can reach the total £17.50 but only with 47 coins:
27 x 50p (£13.50) plus 21 x 20p (£4.20) = £17.70......whereas
26 x 50p (£13.00) plus 22 x 20p (£4.40) = £17.40.  And the answer would have to lie in between the two !

5. 4 miles: 15 of the 19 miles covered at a mile a minute took 15 minutes. 4 miles covered at a mile every 3 minutes (= 12 minutes) adds up to 19 miles in 27 minutes.  

8) 3000 calories:  cutting down by 40% meant she consumed 1800 calories on Monday, 1500 on Tuesday and 1000 on Wednesday, adding up to 4300.

10) 75 sets:  Cyril = 75 wins, fifteen fewer = 60 = 3 times as many as Jesse (20). If Jesse won five fewer (15) that would be a fifth of Cyril's 75.

there has to be an odd number of 50's and a multiple of 5 number of 20's

Perhaps the solution is

27 x 50p (£13.50) plus 21 x 20p (£4.20) = £17.70 with 48 coins, but one of the 20 pences is a dud (worthless) bringing it back to £17.50.

The answer therefore is 20 'good' 20 pences, plus one 'dud'. ;D

7 algebra is pretty shakey these days but i'll go for -3

 x/3=6(x-5)/4 expanding x/3=6x/4-30/4 finding lowest common denominator 4x/12=18x/12-90/12 multiply both sides by 12

 48x=18x-90 rearranging 90=18x-48x n i.e 90=-30x therefore x=-3

13 8 gifts openeed must be 2 3rds of the total therefore each had 12 so the total is 24

4x/12 = 3 (6x - 30) /12

therefore
4x = 18x - 90

9x - 2x = 45

therefore
7x = 45

answer:
x = 6 and 3/7ths.
