When you say the opposition are 'weak', remember we only won the First Test by a mere 14 runs: I think Clarke will manage a sizeable innings before the series is over. Although you know that Clarke will get an innings at some point! At the end of the day like you say Mark, Clarke is going to score big soon Top tipstering here !

Australia 507-7 at tea. Expect them to open up and get as near as poss to 600 before declaring overnight. This will leave England chasing 400 to avoid the follow-on.

Clarke is proving to be a shrewd captain: declared at 527-7 and allowed his bowlers 2 hours to get a couple of England wickets, which they achieved. Okay, one was a nightwatchman, but even that was in unfortunate circumstances - declared caught when it was off his trouser pocket ! Cook didn't want to waste an appeal. With Root gone, much now rests on the shoulders of Cook and Trott, Cook hopefully not under the weather tomorrow (he was today). Cook's tactics should be to dig in as anchor man whilst Trott and Pietersen go for their shots, taking the fight to the Aussies. The reliable Bell to steady the ship if disaster threatens. Not expecting too much again from Pieterson judging by that heavily bandaged hand.

If im honest i never expect too much from Pietersen! Cook, Trott and Prior are all due a score so maybe tomorrow is their time to shine! I dont blame Bresnan for not reviewing it, the batsmen might beed them tomorrow and the third umpire isnt overly trustworthy!

dont think it matters who is coach, the Ausies are weaker players than they used to be That is very true and goes back to my earlier statement of this being the weakest Australian team for some time..... Although you know that Clarke will get an innings at some point! Let me just point out an earlier comment i made.... ;)

His less than extravagant strike rate may be useful today, i think we are better off pushing for a draw than a win, if we force the issue of that big total, then in spectacular English fashion we will make a hash of it.

Well, a miserable innings from Trott and a classy 62 from Cook see England 119-4 at lunch. Both out of course and we shall have to see what Pieterson and Bell can do. KP has been bright so far with 33 n.o but having to pull one hand away from the bat. Can't see England avoiding the follow-on.

Its not looking good if im honest, although even if Australia win this one, i cant see them winning the next two, touch wood!

KP brings his 50 up with two successive sixes off Nathan Lyon ! And Bell hits a six off him too. I'm watching Liverpool v Olympiakos at the same time, so am in a sort of sporting utopia !

Pietersen nearly at 100, much required innings from an England perspective! Bell unfortunately gone to a good ball from Harris, Bairstows time to shine?!

Very disappointed with Pietersen after he got the century under his belt. Instead of opening up and taking the fight to Australia, he went into his shell and took 41 balls to add just another 13. It's not just about avoiding the follow-on, there will still be 200 runs to make up on that should it happen. Providing the rain holds off on Monday, though, there could be an exciting finish in prospect: with the Aussies needing to win (the draw no good) they may well go for an early declaration and set England a tantalising target of, say, three runs per over (270 in 90 overs) in the hope they can bowl us out on a turning pitch.

Play halted for bad light half an hour before tea with Australia 172-7. Ridiculous ! Has potentially ruined the chance of a close finish. Game should peter out to a draw some time tomorrow. We will have secured the Ashes, but - boring !

Not quite true, play was halted before tea for rain. Players went off after tea for bad light, then about 45 minutes later it rained and play has now been abandoned for the day. I think the chance of a close finish will be ruined by the rain rather than a decision made about the bad light.

Yeah, you're right of course. Trouble is, it's been such a great match so far - a game of contrasts - and I don't want it to end !
Today has seen Stuart Broad 'walking' and 'pantomime villain' Warner caught by his nemesis Root. Plus some exciting batting at 5 runs an over. I want more tomorrow !
Expect Clarke to bite the bullet and declare now, but a shame if his hand was forced by the bad light decision.

It makes for some intereting digest for the fifth day me thinks! I wouldnt be surprised if Australia stick England in tomorrow morning, they have got runs to play with, but yiu never know! England are capable of blocking for 90 overs of course!
