Heres a good one for constructive debate, red cards for diving, yes or no?
I think yes, its the most cowardly tactic a footballer can employ, (to say nothing of its continental origins ;)) and has poisoned the game, yellow carding players for it doesnt go far enough.
Although us football supporters are fickle, what if it was a world cup final against Germany in the 90th minute and Ashley Young goes down for a penalty, gets awarded it and England score to win, we will be all for it then! I open the floor to you all so to speak.

A can of worms this one........
Yes I hate cheats in any sport. But a more important question needs solving first: "When is a dive not a dive ?" - only I don't think that referees' interpretation of this is always correct.
Sometimes when fouled, yes the player seems to have been "looking for it" but when he has forward momentum and a leg is put across in front of him, or his ankle is caught, or his legs are whipped from under him, what else is he to do but go to ground ? In such a case, surely, the non-awarding of a penalty is sufficient punishment for failing to get the benefit of the doubt in a 50/50 situation ?
I do not subscribe to the pundits' over-simplistic view of "if the ref doesn't award him a penalty then he has to send him off for diving". With no half-measures.
Having said that, I used to laugh at Emile Heskey's (built like Frank Bruno) ability to go down like a sack of spuds if anyone breathed on him. And Crystal Palace used to fire everything up to sole striker Andy Johnson in the box who would 'win' a penalty week in, week out.
But the game is more sophisticated at the top level these days, with teams like Man City with several strikers running into the box at the same time with flowing movement and trying to pass the ball into the net. Must be a referee's nightmare.

I agree, plus half the time you get some reffing howlers where theyre stood in front of an incident and they get it wrong. I wouldnt lime to be a premier ref but at the end of the day theyre rigorously trained and paid good money to make these calls.
I think once you start to tackle diving you have to go so far as punishing theatricallity. Ive seen some disgusting incidents where some big girls blouse goes down clutching his face because someone brushes his leg, and in extreme cases the 'perpertrator' is then dismissed, its more than diving for me.
Of course to tackle diving we must first determine what a dive is, i remember Bale being booked for diving last season when the left back he was running at absolutely cropped him in the box! On a day if the rules were amended he would of been sent off!

Exactly, I remember that Bale incident and the look of disbelief when the ref booked him..... Expecting the player to stay on his feet after a tackle like that unreasonable to the extreme !

On this Diving subject is a can of worms as Tommo says, however on a slight tangeant there always seems to be a Red Card when a pen is given!! I understand the proffessionl foul and rightly so a Red should be shown but the rule is now of denying a goal scoring chance. Is a penalty kick not a goal scoring chance? I think it is...so punishment should be a yellow card if the offence is correct for a yellow but I don`t agree with a red as the defender hasn`t prevented a goalscoring chance....

Quite right a red is near enough always given, i think the Palace defender sent off at the weekend was a bit unfortunate, on another day might not of been a red. But thats Old Trafford syndrome for you ;)

I supppse we cant help sloppy reffing at the best of times, its like in any sport, how many howlers do we see in cricket these days!

A sweetener for tommo on missing yet another Jersey......being able to watch FA Cup Wimbledon v Coventry in my living room (on BT Sport1 HD) following a nice curry and with beers on standby. Mind you, kick-off has been delayed till 8pm due to massive tailbacks on the A3 following a serious accident at Esher Common (some of our players were stuck for 3 hours and only just made it to the ground).
[edit - 0-0 at half time, two point-blank saves by their goalie, and could have had a penalty.]

53 mins.......Back of the net ! Smith scores ! Out comes the hat ! 56 mins.......Bugger ! Goalkeeping error. 1-1 59 mins.......Double b****r......1-2 Coventry playing like wounded animals. Can we turn it round ? 69 mins.......That's it, free kick deflected into own net. 1-3 Not our day.

Watched the Merseyside derby 3-3 thriller on BT Sport this avo......Some great headed goals, a bendy free kick from Suarez......justified Liverpool equaliser in the last 5 mins as Everton were lucky to finish with 11 players.

Spurs v ManYou on BT Sport at present, 57 mins gone and stands at 2-2. Rooney on course for a hat-trick. Absolutely terrible penalty decision, Spurs goalie going for the ball and made contact with the attackers legs after he was already on the way to the floor..........Ref definitely a ManYou admirer !

Highly depressing start to the new term for the Arsenal! Really outlined that theyve spent no money, in my view the fans have a valid point of booing at the end because im just as frustrated! Been a gooner all my life and this just about sums it all up 971587_10200481614779786_242847398_n by Anglianut, on Flickr And a return to the summit ;)

Like Big Phil, I have also been a Gooner all my life. And I am one of the many West Country season ticket holders who attend all home games. Great battling win today v Newcastle, and back to the top. If Le Prof spends some more cash on a proven goal scorer and a bit of back up for the defence (although who will be available in Jan?) I believe we can hold on to top spot. There will of course be a huge challenge from Citeh and Chelski and possibly The Scousers, but, if we can nick a few points off the "top" teams, we can do it. Up the Arse(nal)

Well there was a lot of talk of Benzema for a discounted price and monsieur has his sites set on Diego Costa (only costs £35m mind you!)
I wonder when people will start saying that 'Arsenal can win the league!'

I wonder when people will start saying that 'Arsenal can win the league!' Its still fashionable among the so called pundits to say we will fade away, and we have not done anything in the last eight seasons to prove them wrong. So lets let the results do the talking and "enjoy" the ride. I only hope we don't get the "Podolski will be like a now signing now he's fit" from Ms Wenger.
Fingers crossed that the trains are running so I can get to town on New Years Day.
Happy new year all Brian

Up the Arse(nal) I am also Gooner with a red membership. Read your posts with interest. Do we need a backup for the back four. We have Vermelen who still looks good but cannot get in with Mert and Koseigny in great form. Only concern is whether Bacary Sagna will sign or leave at the end of the season. A top class striker will be handy althogh with Podolski back from injury he can be used as a back up for Giroud. We certainly know who to win ugly now which was a concern for a long time. We have come through a tough Christmas campaign still on top and are in a good position going into the new year. Hopefully with luck through injuries we can maintain our position at the the top where we should be

I think Giroud needs a rest, he is always willing and is a great physical asset as he holds the ball up well and gives others good service, but he is looking increasingly knackered at the end of 90 minutes.
As Bigphil says we were looking at Benzema, but we are not really short of midfielders.
In defence, I agree the Verminator is now fit but he needs games to get sharp again. Jenkinson worries me as he gets caught out far to often by good wingers. Mertasacker is playing well at the moment as he reads the game so well, but his slow turning is always going to be a problem when he loses the ball, so we could do with a bit of back up here.
But we are all just glad to be at the top again Petrified%but looking slyly over our shoulders. At least its in our hands now.

Well, a fascinating weekend of football: The Ar$e win the north London derby; Cardiff knock out Newcastle and Swansea beat Man U - both of them doing it away from home. But biggest shock must be the disintegration of Premiership West Ham at the hands of Nottm Forest (0-5). Moyes and Allardyce must both be feeling rather insecure right now.

I reckon 5-0 to Forest would of been fantastic odds at the start of the day! Can still see that poor little West Ham kid crying his eyes out. If a Prem side aren't going to take the FA Cup seriously, then they should make the match 'free admission'. This one was on Prime TV too, so doubly embarrassing.

I agree, as far as im concerned if theres any competition to give youth experience its without the doubt the League Cup, which has been a bit mickey mouse for years!

My opinion is that if teams are not going to take any of the cups seriously and play a full team, they they should pull out! Only teams who really want to win it should enter. Feel so sorry for the fans who have paid a lot of money to go and watch a reserve/youth team play!
maybe it is time to let teams enter "B" teams like they do in Spain ?

Citeh would probably win it then, with the strength of their squad. I am no fan of fat Sam, but he had his eyes on more important (to him) things, and he did inform the board of what he proposed to do. But as someone who travels 350 miles to watch my team, I do feel for their fans who had to suffer that. One of the reasons I don't go to many League cup games. (not on my season ticket anyway )

I don't think City would win it. The teams are treated as separate teams, so you cannot play for both in the same season. What this does is give the youngsters time on the pitch as a squad instead of loaning them out to other clubs for the experience.

Wenger logic:
Not signed Draxler as he believed that he wasnt worth the money despite a deal near enough being struck! Now another cracking joke, sign Kallstrom, was already ruled out for 6 weeks and WAS INFORMED by said player at his medical.
Almost as if hes doing all this deliberately to be honest.
