After reading the comments on here and discussing them with the Committee of the Suffolk Bar Billiards Association I have decided that the following changes will be made to the rules and will apply to all future 4 pin Opens. I will amend the rules as soon as I can but below are details of the changes.
In order to make the game fairer to both players;
No player may time his or her game or clock watch. No player may chalk their cue during their own break, as this wastes time From the break shot no player may pot both balls, if they do it will be a foul shot and that player will lose their break. Each player’s breaks will be limited to a maximum of TEN shots. After the bar has dropped the point’s value of every hole will double. i.e the 10 will become 20. The 20 will become 40, etc and the Red will also count double, i.e potting the red ball down the 200 after the bar has dropped will score 800 points. This should mean not many games would be won by the time the bar drops, making it far more interesting
Also following on from Milko’s suggestions we are considering a handicap system. Any player that plays the current Champion automatically gets a 1’500 point start Any player that plays the current runner up automatically gets a 1’000 point start Any player that plays a losing semi finalist from the previous tournament gets a 500 point start.

Excellent! Particularly the 'timing'.

Did these two proposals not get approval then Dave.... 1) A "Golden Ball" will be made available during all games involving a Suffolk player, if potted by the Suffolk player in any hole it immediately counts as 10,000 points added to their score, if potted by a non-Suffolk player a deduction of 10,000 points will be applied. 2) All players called "Dave" receive a starting handicap of 5,000 points in each game. LOL - If you really wanted to make it more difficult for the players, you could try what is rumoured to have happened when the very first Inter-League match was staged in Sussex: The scene is set: 1958/59 Mid Sussex League hosted Horsham League at the Pilgrim Inn, Haywards Heath (we know it as the Golden Eagle): The handle was pulled, the first player took his shot, both balls headed for the 50 pockets...........and failed to drop, as the balls were too big for the holes !

What did happen a few years ago was that Reading made some triangles for the inaugural AEBBA Alternate Rules using triangles competition. When they came to be used the balls would not fit inside them which goes to prove that people in Reading have smaller balls than is normal.

I was someone up for playing in the 4pin open but finances said other wise I didn't realise you were a 4-Pin fan, Bob ? There's a vacancy in our summer league if you're interested. You only need 3 players to form a team and entry is free.
