As was discussed a long tome ago on here, I have started to make an archive of the Bar Billiards Quarterly published from 1991 onwards through to issue 64 in winter 2006/2007 by Pete Farrelly. The acquisition of a scanner with a sheet feeder has made this a lot easier!! I have asked Pete's permission for this and he has kindly assented. I have put them on the Witney BB website for now and they can be accessed through the link on the home page at www.wanddbba.co.uk/Only the first six have been done thusfar but more will be added as and when I have time and I have reduced the file size for better transfer rates etc. This combined with the fact that the earlier ones were often printed double sided on thin paper means than some a bit fuzzy but still very readable. I have kept a copy of all at full resolution but each file is 3-5MB so they may be problematic if you have a slow BB connection. There is some fascinating historical stuff there amongst the stats and I hope it will be of interest to some as well as a permanent record of those years. There are some large gaps in my BBQs so I will be begging the missing ones from anyone who has them please...on loan of course. Have a look... Tony

Thanks once again Tony for your diligence in scanning the various publications of PF's BBQ's and displaying them on the Witney website.
This has enabled me to properly research the history of the counties which disappeared off the radar shortly before the turn of the century.
I have disseminated the information provided in the first 16 editions of BBQ and as a matter of interest list it here as a definitive record of the all-too-brief involvement of the counties of Herts, Leics, Somerset, S.Yorks and Wiltshire. (Yes, there were Lincs and Avon too, but their demise predates the first BBQ (Mar 1991))

Right, I've done all I have and these are archived and available via a link at www.wanddbba.co.uk/I am missing more than I thought although they may turn up (I can't remember ditching them!) but in the meantime if anyone has; BBQ numbers; 23-41 44 45 47 54-55 57-63then I would appreciate borrowing them to complete the archival of a vital bit of BB history. They will be returned in pristine condition of course along with a DVD version if required!! thanks Tony

All issues of BBQ are now available on-line in low resolution via the link on the Welcome page at www.wanddbba.co.uk/ Some of the PDFs are a bit wonky but the originals were like that...honest Do have a look round as it provides a fascinating insight into the early days of Opens, the ongoing problems and the general state of the game from 23 years ago through to 2007. Pete Farrelly put an awful lot of work into these and it would be a shame if they were lost forever. I am putting these (in high res. form) on a DVD and will give them to key BB people for archival but if anyone else would like a copy please drop me a PM. Many thanks again to Nigel Senior for filling in the large gaps in my library! Tony

Hi Tony,
Great piece of work and am grateful for the preservation, however I'm not seeing hyperlinks in Internet Expoder for many of the pdf's eg 22 downwards.
Several of Nigel's BBQ's were photocopies from me, if you have problems with 'wonky' ones let me know and I'll get originals to you.
Sav.

Sav. Hmmm....they should be there Chris - is it a refreshing problem? It may be the layering of the doc. I used to create the list not working properly. I'll do another list in a more sensible program if it still doesn't work. (BBQ23 onwards were the new ones I put on today BTW) Tony

Pete Farrelly put an awful lot of work into these and it would be a shame if they were lost forever. Tony Really useful from my point of view: I had some gaps in my personal record of forages into Jersey in the 1990's and this has helped me to find the missing details. The 'Colin Thompson' referred to in certain publications was indeed me, and I was uncertain as to whether or not I went in 2000 but can now see that I did (must have been an especially boozy weekend !) I can now show the results of the rest of my analysis of the first 16 BBQ's here, pinpointing certain 'historical moments' in the development of the present-day calendar as we know it: So there we have it - a timeline of the game's history in the 4-year period 1991-1995. To find where the exploits are documented in full you can use this as an index and visit the appropriate BBQ (currently on Tony's Witney website) yourself !

So Sav can see 1-22 and Tommo can see 23-64! Hmmm - you two should get together! I'll use another form to hold the links and see if it helps....could you both refresh your caches and see if it works OK please? I'll do it in the next hour hopefully as it's cold out in the garden. thanks Tony

The list of pdf's is visible as text but no hyperlink shows on 1 - 22 and yes I've refreshed and reloaded the page
Several of the later ones are missing their hyperlink as well 42, 43, 46, 48-53, 56 & 64.
Not sure why but a quick look at the document source has all the failing links at the front of it followed by the working ones with absolute positions so that they appear in the right place sequentially.

Right - I've fiddled about with the link boxes so that don't overlap and are not embedded within the table. Works in Safari, Firefox and Chrome on all my Macs but could someone try on a PC please as all mine are now in the bin........ thanks Tony

Hi Tony,
Sorry to be a pain, but BBQ30 has the pages displayed in a 'funny' order, ie. all the odd numbered pages first, followed by the evens starting from the last and reading backwards to finish on page 2. (Only became apparent to me when viewing the Sussex Open which seemed an alarmingly low entry that year !)
Regards, tommo

Because of the way I scanned them I had to rearrange after scanning but I obviously missed that one! Please let me know if you find more!! Tony

There is some fascinating historical stuff there amongst the stats and I hope it will be of interest to some as well as a permanent record of those years. Here is part 4 of 4 of the analysis of Fazza's 64 BBQs from a flagging and somewhat relieved tommo. This coves the period Jan 2003 to Jan 2007, from which stage Nigel's excellent "Quarterlies" take over. This serves as an index - find what you wish to elaborate the detail on, and then look up the appropriate edition of BBQ on Barbelman's Witney website, where they are hosted. I hope I have provided enough detail though for anyone to quickly scan down and list Open and National winners in chronological order - should they wish to do so. We now have a comprehensive record of bar billiards history from 1991 to the present day and I would like to thank Tony for having taken the trouble to scan and record what must amount to around 2,000 sheets of A4 !

What I find fascinating is noting the exact points in time that 'new' stars (eg Nigel Senior, Mark Trafford, Phil Collins, Richard Wooton) burst on to the scene in the comparatively recent time of this century: Pit this against the 'old guard' - only by reading through do I now realise how consistently good the likes of Tony Martin, Phil Hawkins, Bill Trinder and Denis Atkins were. Even more amazing are the careers of those like KT and Milko who were always around: and are still equally formidable now! Please feel free to note your own comments and observations here ! tommo

Thanks for the precis of the BBQs Clive - a mammoth task! The ultimate hope is to get them archived on the newly-revamped front end of AEBBA site along with a guide to table maintenance that Chris and I are working on. I do ask people to have a scan through a few of them - they will bring back memories...... Link at www.wanddbba.co.uk/Tony
