The season starts with an interesting meeting between Layabouts (league champions) and Happy Landing the new/reformed team, sadly not at the new venue, we will have to wait till the third week for the first game on the ex Jersey table.
With all the changes/amendments the the rules are they going to be attached to the GBBA website as agreed at the AGM.
Best of luck the everyone for the new season.

Pre Season friendly see the breakaways win 4-1 v the Happy Landings.
Great to see a new venue with the landlord taking an active role. As a pool player Alan Opie will cause a few upsets in his first season. Happy Landings now has 2 tables both Jersey style tables. One with a speed cloth and one with a proper cloth (league Table). Rumour also has it that a 3rd table is on the way and we could well see a few tournaments held throughout the winter.
Both tables play lovely and I predict some very large score this year from those tables.
It will be interesting to see how the new rules work this season. With teams now getting an extra point for team aggregate. Teams are also allowed to play with 4 players. One of which gets to play twice to make the 5 games. In this case the aggregate point is automatically lost.
Cannot remember the other new rules, these should be on the Guernsey Website soon.
Anyone have any ideas when the new singles and pairs league forms for registration will be out?

Seems ironic that Guernseys own version of the 'Four player rule' has been brought in during the season I have decided to take a break from the game on a regular basis. I had been trying to get this rule introduced for about 5 seasons, and the proposals were always given short shrift.
I do not know quite how it will work or if it will be accepted by all. As long as some teams do not constantly turn up with 4 players and form a 'super team' to win the league title each season. I still think there should be some sort of caveat introduced where teams can only use the rule on three or four occasions each season.

Hi Norman
Well with it being approved at the AGM the players and committee have no choice but to accept it. The fear of only turning up with 4 every week is a real threat. However those that do will automatically forfeit the extra point awarded for an aggregate win. I think this will encourage teams to get 5. In a tight league I think that the extra point could well make the difference.

Hi, The other point in the 4 player rule is that the team with 5 players will get the break in the redrawn game, I.e if Layabouts are playing Happy Lands at Happy Lands but only field 4 players then even though they are the away team they will only have 4 of the opening breaks not 5. Hopefully this will encourage teams to field five players as they have the potential of dropping two points, on a close season this could cost a team the league title.

Think this sounds fair then and if any refinements are needed after trialing this for one season I am sure it will be looked at again for the following season.

Interesting start of the season.Game 1 and the Breakaways we enforced to use the new 4 player rule. Sick note le Page pulls out late, too late in the day to find a replacement.
So Giants Choose the Breakaways new and inexperienced Player Steve Carre. So playing away from home Steve gets to play John Van Katwyk and forfeits the break in an extra game. Steve plays really well and wins his first league game.
This gave the breakaways a 2-0 lead as earlier Geoff Ogier pips Tom Oliver in a tight match.
Matt Wilcox then beats Luke Oliver in what looked a tight Game but with the bar about to drop and Matt sitting on a 3k break missed, allowing Luke back in but the bar dropped as soon as Luke got the break back.
Steve then had his second game, this time with the break, however he wasn't able to repeat his earlier success and lost to Terry Kenny.
Myself then managed a lucky win after only scoring 150 on the break, Bob le moignan was soon ahead and playing. However I managed to fight back and win by a comfortable scoreline come the end.
so a 4-2 win to breakaways v the Giants

It is with much regret to announce that Pete Wilson has passed away.
He was a very nice guy and will be missed by everyone in Barbilliards. He only played a few seasons but become a keen member of the Breakaways team. He only ever managed one win for us, but it was worth the wait.

Peter was better known for his exploits on the chess board and was heavily involved in organising competitions locally and the annual Guernsey Chess Open. He was also a member of the St Peter Port Parish Douzaine. A genuine nice guy who always supported and took an interest in Bar Billiards even though he struggled to master the game at league level.

Called in at a great time of need, the Knight Sir Chancelot retrieved his Lance from the deep and mysterious lake of La Fontaine, to help lead his fellow Knights to a 4-1 victory on enemy soil. It was a remarkable victory given that the home army held a 5-4 man advantage over the invaders who fought hard and true on a difficult battlefield. Sir Ben the Brave secured the most wounds inflicted on an enemy opponent.

Shocking table conditions hamper an entertaining night. For the premium venue in Guernsey to have a table that bad is a disgrace and no wonder the game is struggling in Guernsey. We did manage to level the table and improve it after the match, but there are serious problem with that slate.
On at least 4 occasions when going for the break the white went straight into the 100. plus numerous other times it span out and pegged or sat between the 200 and 100. It was good to see that the Fontaine have introduced Billiards to 2 more players. Albeit due to only having 3 players, they managed to recruit 2 regulars from the bar. Both of which seemed to enjoy the game and played very well, with even 1 of them getting a win against the Breakaways new boy Steve Carre.

that a table I first played on in 1968 and was my home table for over 25 years in the Rohais, Jamaica and lastly the Wayside before I stopped playing for 18 months should be almost unplayable. The table use to play like a dream and was arguably the best on the island, high scoring, fast and straight except for the slight turn to the left when playing the left hand thirty which has been the trend on the two Riley's I've owned. I don't know what is happening at the Fontaine but if my memory serves me right this is the third good table that's entered the venue only to turn into a real pig to play.

The Knights of Guernseys capital city traveled North again to the land of the Giant Knights with special powers, once again outnumbered 5v4. First on to the battlefield was The Timelord Knight Sir Tthomas who was drawn to joust against Ben the Brave, who missed the first charge, which was punished with a good strike by the home Knight. Next into the field was The home jouster The Golden Knight Sir John versus The Glass Knight El Tel, who scored early, inflicting wounds that that Sir John could not recover from. The score was now 1-1. The home army then tried to gain advantage by putting their youngest fighter The Skywalker Knight, Sir Luke on against the already wounded Sir Ben the Brave. Despite having some hits deflected, Sir Ben regained his composure to gain and important winning joust, turning the advantage in favour the away Knights. Being called upon again to travel to this strange land, Sir Chancelot selected his trusty lance and was unnerved by the challenge of The Roller Knight Sir Kane who was on a roll, scoring 19,000 over two games the full moon previous in a practice joust. Sir Chancelot maintained his 100% winning tournament record, easily out-riding his worthy opponent. Last on was home Knight Sir Bob The Wise versus The Mat Finish Knight. Despite an early stumble, Sir Mat Finish easily claimed the final joust, leading his army to a famous 4-1 victory on a distant foreign battlefield.

Breakaways get taught a lesson by the new league leaders. Happy Landings and The Baulkliners are the early pace setters this season with both teams now played 5. Baulkliners have 19 points to the Happy Landings 18. The two teams are yet to face each other though.
These 2 don't have it totally wrapped up just yet though with Breakaways and Giants both on 16 points Albeit both have played a game more, with the Layabout (knights) on 15 points.

Happy landings slip up in the pursuit of the title last night with 5th place Breakaways winning 3-2. Things could of been much worse with the Breakaways taking a 3-0 lead. Captain In Champion drew his Old Friend (Me), I say old friend as it was like frying fish as I battered him. To be fair I played so slow even I was bored. It was good though to be only the second person this season to beat champ. Next up was the Bullet. So far unbeaten this year, this was always going to be a tricky affair though with Roy le page starting to find some form at last. Roy was a comfortable winner in the end and also walked away with the highest score of the night with a lowly 7500. Gary Naftel then had Matt Wilcox to contend with. Gary seems to of grown a hatred for this new league table. Even though it is their home table Gary is still not able to find a win. With Matt scoring 1500 Gary could never get the break back ( story of his Season) and the game drifted away and the breakaways were 3-0 up. Paul Le Gallez had the pleasure of 2 games tonight due to illness. He turns up late looking like the cat that got the cream ( I assume a hot date preluded his night out with the boys) Anyway this boy could do no wrong. Eyes closed and away he went. After Geoff Ogier had missed early there was no coming back in what is proving to be a difficult season for him. Paul then was straight back on again to Play Matt Wilcox who was also required to fill in due to illness. Paul carried on where he left off and gave Matt no chance as he easily built up enough score to ensure his second victory of the night. Actual scores to be updated on www.guernseybarbilliards.org.uk/ in due course.
