BAR BILLIARD REPORT An Industrial Electrical Services Sudbury and District Bar Billiard top of the table clash took place when The Bay Horse’ A’ travelled to take on the previously unbeaten Hadleigh Cock. Each side won a doubles with comparative ease and a close contest looked likely. The singles games saw the visitors adapt to the table and Jason Lawrence won the opening game with some good shots 2180-960. Melvin Tilbury and Alasdair Carnegie were neck and neck before the Bay man compiled an excellent 1250 break to win 1780-1390. With the visitors now firmly in the driving seat Steve Hale made sure of the win with an emphatic 2030-490 victory. The Cock tried to make the score respectable but this was to no avail as wins by Dave Lillie and Jeremy Fry gave their team an unexpected 6-1 win. Brewery Tap hosted the Saracens who occupied third place in the table. Determined to retain the pressure on the top two teams they were soon 2-0 up after the doubles. Although games were not particularly high scoring Ken Drake won the opening singles to increase the lead. The match was over as a contest in the next as Ian Furlonger gained victory 1050-500. Determined to enhance their game difference the Saracens kept their foot on the gas and wins by Dick and Nick Cheshire made the whitewash a possibility. This was not to be however as Terry Moore won the final contest to give the Tap their solitary win. The bottom two teams met at Stanningfield Red House where the ‘B’ side entertained Cornard Brook. After sharing the doubles the match swung one way and then the other with Matt Baker giving the hosts a 2-1 lead. Adam Baalham levelled it up with a 920-750 win before his captain, Craig Millgate, gave the Brook the lead. This was short lived however as Steve Bennett made sure of a decider by winning the penultimate game. Tom Cladd and Simon Tonkins went head to head and it was the latter who prevailed 1500-1210 to give the Brook a well deserved 4-3 away victory. The Brook Gloves played host to the Red House All Stars and it turned out a great night for the visitors. Winning both doubles narrowly, Lee Harman then increased the advantage winning 2390-1840. Elaine Wright performed well to decide the outcome of the match after the fourth game. The All Stars kept playing well and it was made 6-0 after wins from Kevin Tobin and John Henderson. Luke Cole-Watts then averted the whitewash with a top scoring 2630. Edwardstone White Horse travelled to take on The Bay Horse ‘B’ and it was all square after the doubles. The hosts then went in front with Jeff Bridges scoring 2610 but Matt Robinson drew the team’s level with a good 2050 that include a 890 break. The White Horse then got their noses in front when And Garvin made it 3-2 and teammate Melvyn Willis won a tremendous tussle with Kieran Pettitt 2040-2010 to clinch the points for his team. The Final game saw Tracy Reeve reduce the arrears with a season’s top score of 3120.

The Bay Horse ‘B’ have suffered a very up and down season so far in the Industrial Electrical Services Sudbury and District Bar Billiard League but recorded their best win of the season when visiting fourth placed Red House All Stars. After sharing the doubles Jeff Bridges top scored with 2240 to give the visitors the lead and this was followed by Rob Cansdale narrowly winning 1270-1150 to increase the lead. The match was won in the next as Tracy Reeve clinched the points for her team. The All Stars rallied in the remaining two games with good wins from Lee Harman and John Henderson that made the final score 4-3. The Brook Gloves were another team to record a convincing away victory when the guests of the Taverners. The Gloves won both doubles before Kevin Patrick halved the arrears but this was to be Taverners only win. Luke Cole-Watts top scored with 1960 and Joe Andrews-Worth, Andy Hill and Dan Ackland-Lang followed with comfortable wins to give the Gloves a 6-1 win. The Saracens continue to keep pace at the top end of the league but faced a tricky looking encounter at Edwardstone White Horse. They were not fazed by the task in hand and easily won both doubles. Chip Millins made it 3-0 and this was soon increased as Dick Cheshire top scored with 1590. Melvyn Willis stopped the rot but Ian Furlonger then won a close game 1420-1300. Georgia Munson pulled another one back for the Horse but it was all in vain as the Saracens clocked up a 5-2 victory. Brewery Tap entertained Hadleigh Cock and soon found themselves trailing 2-0 with the Hadleigh outfit winning both doubles. Tap responded when Pete Lillie won the opening singles. John Raine made it 3-1 and a last ball 200 by Melvin Tilbury made sure of the win. Pat Parmenter reduced the arrears but the Cock made it 5-2 when Graham Rolfe won the final game. The Bay Horse ‘A’ maintain their relentless pursuit of the title with a 7-0 whitewash against Stanningfield Red House ‘B’. Having won both doubles the Horse players excelled with all of them scoring in excess of 2000. The visitors were unable to live with their opponents and comfortable wins by Jason Lawrence, Jeremy Fry, Dave Lillie, Steve Hale and Alasdair Carnegie completed a comfortable win.

Hadleigh Cock and the Saracens cannot be separated as they go neck and neck to keep pace with The Bay Horse ‘A’ at the top of the Industrial Electrical Services Sudbury and District Bar Billiard League where they are level on points with identical game averages. Hadleigh Cock entertained the Brook Gloves who had moved into fourth place but had the match won early in proceedings. Comfortably winning both doubles John Raine then won the opening singles to put the Cock 3-0 up. David Willis then sealed the points winning 1420-1120 before Melvin Tilbury increased the lead further. The Gloves then rallied and a top scoring 2590 by Luke Cole-Watts and a final game win by Joe Andrews-Worth reduced the arrears. The Saracens travelled to Cornard Brook where the doubles were shared. Dick Cheshire then put the visitors in front but the scores were soon all square as Tyke Tonkins inflicted a rare defeat on Ian Furlonger 1550-1480. The Brook then found it hard to keep pace with their opponents as Chip Millins won for the Saracens and a mighty impressive 2110 by Sue Cheshire gained the points with Ken Drake winning the last to give his team a 5-2 victory. The Bay Horse ‘B’ made the short trip to take on the Taverners and after sharing the doubles were given the lead by Rob Cansdale. Gillian Towse then levelled up the scores only for Jeff Bridges to give the Horse a narrow advantage. The penultimate game was very close with Chris Green winning 980-950 to take the match to a last game decider. Mick McAndrews and Sam Kerruish did battle and the latter produced a fine performance to give his team a 4-3 away win. Another match that went the distance was at Stanningfield where the Red House All Stars played hosts to Edwardstone White Horse. The home side narrowly won both doubles and this was extended to 3-0 when Kevin Tobin won the first singles. The Horse then staged a major turn around and produced good wins from Matt Robinson, Doedy Munson and Melvyn Willis to bring the scores level. All Stars captain, Lee Harman, then compiled a break of 800 in a total of 1830 in the deciding game to give the All Stars a nail biting 4-3 victory. Stanningfield Red House ‘B’ gained their second away win of the season when visiting the Brewery Tap. They raced into 4-0 lead, winning both doubles and Martin Bennett and James Baker winning the first two singles with the latter top scoring with 1920. With the match won the visitors relaxed and took their foot off the pedal allowing their hosts to make the final score more respectable.

Red House All Stars entertained high flying Saracens in the Industrial Electrical Services Sudbury and District Bar Billiard League in a fixture that went to the wire. The doubles were shared before Chip Millins gave the visitors the lead. A very close encounter gave Matt Leeks a 1100-1040 win to level the scores and Kevin Tobin continued the good work to put the hosts 3-2 up. The penultimate game saw Ken Drake make sure the match went a last game decider. This paired home skipper, Lee Harman, against Ian Furlonger and the former played a real captains game to clinch a 4-3 victory and inflict only the seasons second defeat on the opposition since mid October. The Bay Horse ‘A’ played hosts to a fast improving Cornard Brook and the visitors hopes were raised after winning the opening doubles but the rest of the games were going to prove an uphill struggle for the Cornard team. The Bay Horse easily took the second doubles and single wins by Steve Hale and Alasdair Carnegie stamped the home teams authority on proceedings. High scoring by Dave Lillie 2750 and Charlie Drake 2810 extended the lead to 5-1 before Jeremy Fry increased it to 6-1 when beating debutant Kirsty Tonkins who put up a valiant effort. The Bay Horse ‘B’ travelled to Hadleigh to play the Cock and soon found themselves trailing after the doubles. A break of 920 helped Melvin Tilbury to a 1430-1070 win and the Cock claimed the points in the following game as Jack Bambling beat an out of sorts Jeff Bridges. The visitors then won their first game of the evening with Kieran Pettitt putting in a good performance. Malcolm Tennick then won the next for the home side and Graham Rolfe top scored with 2110 to make the final score 6-1. Brook Gloves produced one of their best efforts of the season when hosting Stanningfield Red House ‘B’. Winning both doubles Joe Andrews-Worth then made it 3-0 before the game of the evening. Alan Giles and James Baker went blow for blow with the latter coming out on top 2250-2140 despite the former building a 800 break. This wasn’t enough to inspire the remaining Red House players who went down to wins from Andy Hill, Luke Cole-Watts and Dan Ackland-Lang giving the Gloves a well deserved 6-1 victory. The remaining match to be played was the Taverners against Edwardstone White Horse and the visitors seemed in a hurry to get it won as they rushed into a 5-0 lead. Taking both doubles Andy Garvin, Doedy Munson and Melvyn Willis then proceeded to win the first three singles with little resistance from the opposition. Things did start to improve for the hosts as firstly Chris Cass won 1580-1430 that included a 700 break and this was followed by Mick McAndrews top scoring with 1670 to reduce the arrears further.

Having caused an upset the previous week Red House All Stars were out to gain another major scalp when playing hosts to The Bay Horse ‘A’ in the Industrial Electrical Services Sudbury and District Bar Billiard League. With the score 1-1 after the doubles the visitors then gained the advantage with wins by Alasdair Carnegie and Jeremy Fry. The All Stars then retaliated as firstly John Henderson reduced the arrears and Elaine Wright brought the match level at three all. Lee Harman and opponent Jason Lawrence went head to head in the final game and the latter prevailed 1870-600 to give his side two vital points in their challenge for the title. Saracens were looking to bounce back from their surprise defeat the previous week when entertaining Stanningfield Red House ‘B’. They commenced in emphatic style easily winning both doubles and the lead was increased further by Ken Drake. Saracens’ Dick Cheshire then made sure of the points and this was followed by Ian Furlonger top scoring with 1570. The penultimate game eventually saw the visitors record their first win with a fine performance by Shannon Gray. The evening was rounded off by Chip Millins making the final score 6-1. Cornard Brook are enjoying a fine debut season in the league and recorded their biggest win to date when the Taverners were the visitors. After victories in the doubles Simon Tonkins scored 2050 to give the Brook a comfortable 3-0 advantage. A narrow 970-910 win by Adam Baalham sealed the points and the whitewash was completed with hard earned wins from Craig Millgate, Tyke Tonkins and Simon Heard. Brewery Tap travelled to Edwardstone White Horse a player short which would makes things that more difficult. They held their own in the doubles before Doedy Munson top scored with 1900 in the opening singles only for Colin Norledge to immediately level it up. The Tap then gained a slender advantage when Pat Parmenter gained a narrow win. Home star Matt Robinson won to make it all square and with the conceded game the Horse ran out 4-3 winners. The Bay Hoses ‘B’ and Brook Gloves went into battle at the Sudbury venue and the away side drew first blood taking both doubles. Tracy Reeve steadied the ship winning the first singles but Dan Ackland-Lang then regained the Gloves two game advantage. Rob Cansdale kept the home teams hopes alive but Andy Hill won the important fourth game to seal a Gloves victory with Jeff Bridges clawing one back in the last leaving the Gloves winning 4-3.

Something had to give at The Bay Horse where the 2nd placed ‘A’ team hosted the Saracens who were level on points in the Industrial Electrical Services Sudbury and District Bar Billiard League. Both sides secured a doubles win before Alasdair Carnegie comfortably won the opening singles for the home side and this advantage was increased by Steve Hale with a 2010-1790 victory. Saracens then fought back gallantly, firstly Ian Furlonger kept his teams hopes alive and this was followed by Dick Cheshire top scoring with 2530 to take the match to a last game decider. Bay’s Dave Lillie had too much firepower for Ken Drake and came out an easy 2330-970 winner giving The Bay Horse two more important points in their quest to retain the title. Leaders Hadleigh Cock entertained Edwardstone White Horse and having won the first doubles Cock’s Melvin Tilbury then compiled a break of 1810, the leagues highest so far this season, to put his team two up. Things looked to be going well but the visitors were about to put a spanner in the works when Melvyn Willis won 1680-1110 that included a 910 break and Georgia Munson played a cool and calculating game to make it all square. The match could now have gone either way and David Willis and Matt Robinson played a great game without a peg being dislodged and the former prevailed 2130-1510. The points were gained in the next when Tilbury continued his outstanding form, winning 3020-820 in which he scored a break of 1510. Doedy Munson reduced the arrears in the final game to leave the Cock winning 4-3. Cornard Brook travelled to the Brewery Tap and continued their recent move up the table. Two low scoring doubles both went the way of the visitors and this lead was increased by Simon Tonkins with a top scoring 1410. With their backs against the wall the Tap fought back with Dennis Watts winning and Pete Lillie just edging home 1330-1130. The penultimate game saw visiting captain, Craig Millgate, avenge an earlier captains game defeat to ensure another Brook victory. Pat Parmenter gained a last game win for the Tap but it left the Brook winning 4-3. Due to power cuts and adverse weather conditions the two remaining matches, Stanningfield Red House ‘B’ v The Bay Horse ‘B’ and Taverners v Red House All Stars were cancelled

Report as submitted to our local news paper
Sudbury White Horse kitcats recorded their first victory in the ies Billiard League when entertaining The Bay Horse ‘B’. Scores were even after the doubles then Emma O’Flynn gave the hosts a 2-1 lead. The visitors responded well through Tracy Reeve to level the scores only for Michelle O’Flynn to top score with 1870 to swing the pendulum in Kitcats favour. The match was destined to go to a final game decider as Jeff Bridges easily won the penultimate game. Ian Longstaff proved the hero for the home side as he won 1500-1030 much to the delight of team colleagues who celebrated their 4-3 win. It was a good night for the Sudbury pub as the White Horse Marathons made the short trip to take on the Taverners and returned with the points after a 4-3 victory. After sharing the doubles the home side edged ahead courtesy of Kevin Patrick but this was soon cancelled out with a win by Pat Parmenter. The Lillie brothers then got the visitors over the line, firstly Pete winning1140-1100 and then Dave making it 4-2. Chris Cass top scored with 1400 to pull one back in the final game. In a clash of the heavyweights The Bay Horse ‘A’ lost their first home league match since March 2015 when hosting the excellent Saracens. Each team convincingly won a doubles before Ken Drake narrowly won 1200-1170 to put the visitors 2-1 up. A master class by Ian Furlonger increased this lead when scoring 3410 that included breaks of 1750 and 1080. The match was then put beyond the Horse as Chip Millins won 1500-1380. Both sides won one of the remaining games giving the Saracens an outstanding 5-2 away win. Spectators witnessed a close match at Cornard Brook where the Gloves took on Hadleigh Cock. Winning a doubles each Melvyn Willis then excelled to beat Luke Cole-Watts by 30 to give the Cock the lead. This was then made 3-1 by John Raine but Alan Giles stopped the rot with a top scoring 2200 to reduce the arrears. The visitors made sure of the points with a win by Melvin Tilbury with Joe Andrews-Worth winning the last leaving the Cock 4-3 victors. For the third week running Red House All Stars were involved in a last game decider when travelling to Edwardstone White Horse but on this occasion they came away victorious. After four games the match was all square with both sides winning a doubles and Kevin Tobin for the visitors and then James Pipe with a score of 2130. The Horse were then given the lead by Matt Robinson but this was immediately cancelled out by Lee Harman. The away side clinched the victory when John Henderson got the better of Andy Garvin.
