There was a fairly lengthy discussion at the Lewes Committee meeting tonight about various different formats for the League Cup this year with the final decision coming down to a choice between "Alternate Rules" or a Full Handicap System rather than the partial handicap system that has been in place successfully for the last couple of year.... the vote went in favour of trying the "Alternate Rules" as that will give the League something completely different to anything tried before. For the benefit of the players within Lewes League, here are the special rules that apply to this version of the game.... 27) Alternate (Triangle) Rules I). The break position for this variation is to play a ball from the centre of the 'D' to hit a triangle of six white balls. (NOTE - to clarify this, if all balls are cleared from the table at any time during the game then they are returned to the "break position" in the triangle and the player that is on the table continues their break). II) The triangle of balls is to be placed on the centre line between the 100 hole and the 10 hole, lead ball nearest the 100 hole, with its centre 14 cms from the centre of the 100 hole. III) Should insufficient balls be available to fill the triangle after the bar has dropped, the triangle will be built row by row from the front and right hand side. IV) All shots to be played 'off-the-spot' from the centre of the 'D'. V} The black skittle will only count as a white for this competition, except for the 'last ball shot' All other penalty shots apart from V) above are in accordance with the normal rules for the game. Should anyone want any more information, please contact me and I will be happy to help. I hope that all players and teams enjoy the new format and look forward to feedback about the competition once it starts.

Will they be equal breaks to? 1st breaks in 1,3 & 5 for away and 2 & 4 for the home?

Will they be equal breaks to? 1st breaks in 1,3 & 5 for away and 2 & 4 for the home? I would say that it is likely to be the same break order as for League games, but the Committee would have to make that decision.

Worth a go, would personally like to see even breaks, but glad to see something different tried and hope everyone enjoys.

Well, we are almost at the half-way stage of the new "Alternate Rules" format for this season and I would be really interested to hear what people think of it so far? I have thoroughly enjoyed it and our team seem to have spent a lot of our matches so far laughing, mostly at our own misfortunes! But there are a couple of my team mates that really don't like the format itself.... so maybe others have the same experience as them and it could therefore be described as similar to Marmite, you either like it or you don't? Nearly all of the games have been very close, many of them won after the bar has dropped and that has to be a good thing. There seems to be a slight advantage to playing against the break with just under 60% of the games being won that way and home teams have won 11 of the 16 games played so far. There have been a lot of good scores in the competition so far and it is nice to see that these are spread around a wide number of players.

Here goes:- One member of the team was definitely against playing this format and after the first few matches nothing has changed. It certainly means more opportunities on the table for everyone which cannot be a bad thing. It strikes me as being even more table dependent than the 'proper' version of the game and it is no surprise to see 8 out of 13 top scores at the Fish. Games in this format can certainly be farcical on certain tables. It wouldn't matter to us what version of the game was played there'd still be plenty of banter and micky-taking going on...

I'm a big fan of this as a change. You can still play well and reap the rewards of playing well without feeling that you've crushed a lesser or more unfortunate player unfairly. I like being able to put my all in and do the best I can without feeling constantly guilty about it and this format allows that.
I know for a fact that my whole team enjoys it, but I have heard the odd moan from other players in the league of all abilities. Marmite indeed

Pros.
All games are generally close, which keeps the interest going for the whole of the match, there are plenty of opportunities for taking a scalp or two, plenty of fun and plenty of banter throughout and a bit of good luck goes a very long way in this format, . Still a nice night out
Cons. But there seems to be something that's not hitting the spot for me, perhaps its the setting the balls in the triangle, seems to me to be a bit hit and miss (no pun intended) with the variable times taken and the lack of accuracy in placement just does not float my boat. now the novelty is wearing off I regret to say that my enthusiasm is gradually diminishing.
