Will be posting some video of the new champ but not tonight.
Just got back from nightmare journey with plane taking off from Jersey and making horrible noises once in the air and turning straight around to make emergency landing back in Jersey with fire-trucks the lot. Turned out an inspection hatch had come away, but the noise! Second attempt resulted in the worst landing I've known, turning cartwheels and doing hop, skip and jump down the runway. Boat if I go again!!
Great weekend and thanks to all the Jersey organisers and Nigel for the tables. Well done to Paul, I had my chance against him after he blacked his opener in the quarters but failed miserably.
Strange, but nothing on the Channel News about this emergency landing - sure it wasn't all those duty free bottles rattling ??????

No it was the real thing even with the stewardess double checking that those by emergency exits knew what they were doing, good job I'd already got rid of the previous night's Thai Shack Red Curry!
Our doubles champs;
UV lighting caused photo problems.

Although it all made fascinating reading for us armchair viewers, it will be good to hear some first-hand accounts from those who were actually there ! For instance, the drama surrounding the Final where poor James seems to have blown a winning position. Well done to Paul Sainsbury, though, on finally becoming World Champ: he came so close against KT a few years back. Perhaps young James will be able to follow suit. Firstly I would have to say congratulations to Paul Sainsbury for winning the World title yesterday in Jersey last night.... after 31 years of trying to win the title (including 2 previous defeats in the final) I can truly understand how much that meant to him and Paul is without doubt a worthy winner. The 2 finals were both fantastic to watch.... for very different reasons. In the Plate Final we had 2 former winners of the main competition and the scores in that match were worthy of any final with Phil Collins emerging as the winner over Mark Trafford in a very high scoring battle. In the main competition there were the 2 contrasting styles of play, Paul looking to play the split shot and James using the Jersey method of potting which had been so effective for him throughout the whole competition including a brilliant win over Kevin Tunstall in the semi-final. I was very pleased to be asked to score the final, with Curt Driver as the checker.... little did I know at that stage that I would be facing the toughest decision I have ever had to make in any game that I have ever scored. James won the roll of the dice and put Paul on first. Paul started well and was up to over 3k when he left his one up short.... James didn't get the run of the balls and Paul was able to get the break back and started to head towards a good score when a split went further right on him than expected and he came off at the back of the table. James got the balls back and looked very comfortable as he played the table out for 5.5k leaving the scores at the end of the first leg as Paul 6,070 to James 5,640. The second game got under way with James carrying on as he had at the end of the first leg and he started to build a lead although he was having to work quite hard around the 50 hole to keep the ball where he wanted it. James had built his lead to about 5k when disaster struck for him with a ball whipping out of the 20 hole very unkindly and coming back towards the left hand white peg and knocking it over with the very last turn before it stopped. The stunned silence was followed by a groan around the room and I picked the peg up. My immediate thought was that it would be break back for Paul but I obviously had to make sure of that and be very careful about that decision. To my amazement it seemed as if the peg went back on the spot without actually quite touching the ball.... although that would have then left the ball in an almost impossible position to clear it without knocking the peg over again. I looked again and thought that I could still see the edge of the spot so decided to try to re-spot the ball again. I slowly slid the peg over the spot from the other side from the ball but as soon as I reached the edge of the spot the ball started to move.... meaning that the ball had to come back giving Paul the break again. I think it would probably be fair to say that he was pretty relieved about that! Paul then missed his second split shot at the back of the table and although he kept his score he didn't pot anything with his next shot and the game was back on again. Both players had several visits to the table and got down to one ball without getting the break back as the tension mounted before Paul got the balls back, found the right place to put the one up and successfully made the split shots to go with them before potting to the 50 hole to make sure of his win leaving James to finish the last few balls of the game. It was a cruel way for James to lose the match although he was as gracious in defeat as he has ever been in victory while it was clear to see how much the win meant to Paul. Both finals were a great was to end a superb weekend..... as always I would like to thank Sean Le Beauvant and Graeme Le Monnier who do such a brilliant job of running the Admin Desk, Nigel Ryall for the excellent tables that he provides and everybody else that helped to organise and run the competition. The Merton Hotel was as good as it always is and I believe were they were also among the sponsors again this year. It was fantastic to see some new faces there this year and two of my sons (who were among those going for the first time) have already said that they want to go back next year so hopefully there will be more people spreading the word and encouraging others to go in the future. Thanks again to all involved.

With all of the excitement of the singles finals I totally forgot to congratulate Jim Millward and Trevor Gallienne for winning the Pairs, the only pair to have retained the title since the competition has been held. Another good final and well done to Colin Southouse and Phil Osborne who were the runners-up this year.

Sorry about that Col......but you did knock us out of the doubles getting the 100 to win the match, so I was attempting a little bit of revenge but (as with most of my shots) missed I must also apologise to Mark James who had the misfortune to score my first knockout match and within two shots was scrambling around on the floor searching for a white ball that I had dropped, it seemed as though it disappeared to the end of the world but fear not as Mark managed to find it .....he then had to put up with about 32 minutes of dreadful bar billiards, testament to him he managed to stay awake for the duration The game is full of what ifs, but in the doubles partnering Chris he had a shot for the 200 to knock out the eventual runners-up and when he played his first knockout singles match he had the balls and was going to strongly only to come off 700 behind and to lose by 800 to......the eventual World Champion, fine margins indeed Thank to you everyone involved in running the event and to those who supported me in my first year I was very proud to receive the Most Meritorious Performance Award and am grateful to those who voted for me
