Pre start report from Andy Ellison
BAR BILLIARDS PROSPECTS 2016-7
The winter season of the Hastings Bar Billiards League gets under way next Wednesday, 7th September.
After some anxiety after the loss of two more venues over the summer, league officials are now more optimistic that the new format will provide a strong basis for a competitive set-up, with seven teams vying for honours.
The League Champions. Ashburnham Arms will be joined at their home venue by an experienced group of players from Eastbourne who will operate as Ashburnham Arms E.
The Nags Head in St. Leonards is rapidly becoming a focus for Bar Billiards in the area and both teams can be expected to offer a serious challenge in all competitions. The A team have made great progress in the last two seasons, whilst the B team, led by Colin Southouse are a threat to all opponents. Under the supervision of landlord Clive Minihane the Nags Head will also provide the home venue for a Hastings B side, hoping to mount a significant challenge in Division 3 of the Sussex League, whist the town’s A team stay at the Ashburnham in Division 1.
Further consolidation is likely too at the Jenny Lind, another Bar Billiards hub in the Old Town. There is likely to be a strengthening of the playing side in the pub’s two teams whilst the support and enthusiasm of hosts KC and Linda Challis have made this an excellent venue for the league’s end of season finals. The solitary single team venue will be the Old King John in Ore village where the well-established squad will be hoping to improve on last season’s record of finishing as runners-up in all three competitions.

Rule amendment proposal
B6. No player registered with the Hastings & Bexhill Bar Billiard League may be registered with any other bar billiards league whose playing night is the same as that of the Hastings & Bexhill Bar Billiards league.
The Current rule is In line with other leagues, but will be proposed for amendment at the next AGM to read
"Players registered with the Hastings & Bexhill Bar Billiard League may be registered with any other bar billiards league whose playing night is the same as that of the Hastings & Bexhill Bar Billiards league but may only play for 1 league on any given night"
This rule allows players the choice to play in another league if not selected to play in their main league on any given night and also maximizes player involvement throughout the season and also gives teams struggling with numbers more player availability.

Nothing to do with me but I personally disagree with this rule, it has been added to other leagues as well. If I were still living in Sussex these rules would have affected my play. My last year in Sussex I played for Handcross (MSBBL) and Albion (Brighton), both played on Wednesdays and I arranged to play Brighton first (playing 1st or 2nd) then drove back to play MSBBL (playing 4th or 5th). I did this for 2 reasons: 1. I wanted to try Brighton league but didn't want to desert MSBBL 2. Mark Senior was short of a player so I was helping him field a team These new rule amendments mean that if someone wanted to help out another team in another league the offer would have to be refused, how is that helping our game?

(1) How would it be policed? If an individual player chose not to advertise that they were playing multiple matches of an evening, then short of scrutinising the match details of every game played in every league on the same night, I can't see how one could be certain of having identified every such occurrence. (2) The rule as worded specifies no penalty for infraction of it. I'd suggest that it's essential to do this, otherwise what happens if someone is deemed to have broken it? Would penalties be applied to the individual player only, or the team they played for, or both? If it was envisaged that penalties would be applied to the team, it then becomes necessary to take into account in which order the offending player played their multiple matches, as this would have a bearing on whether the team as a whole could be held to account. The rule would then require a clause to deal with this scenario. Please excuse my intrusion into a debate in which I have no personal involvement. In my defence, although my time in bar billiards administration is now long ago, I do remember more than one occasion on which I was required to pass judgement on contentious issues that had arisen because the rules that covered them, whilst drafted with the very best of intentions, were not sufficiently water-tight or precise to deal with the consequences of their own application. It's generally best to sort these things out while they are still theoretical rather than actual.

Nothing to do with me either, says nosey-parker tommo gleefully joining in an open-house debate.....
Mark is absolutely correct, the wording has to be water-tight, specifying penalties to pay in a case of a contravention.
I am fundamentally in favour of a player being permitted to sign on as a casual reserve for more than one league who share a playing night - and then being able to turn out to play for whichever team is short. Can't see the harm in that.
But I am against playing two matches in the same night on the grounds of it being poor etiquette (sends out the message that I can't afford my teammates the pleasure of my company for an entire evening).
This is the sort of thing I used to indulge in in my impetuous youth when I was greedy for games and played as much as possible. The last time I tried it was in 1979: played first at the White Hart Cranleigh and then had a scary high-speed journey through twisty country lanes back to Crawley to play last at the Charcoal Burner. I was met on the doorstep by my irate captain who read me the riot act for "only having made it back with a minute to spare with the league depending on it". Never again !

Hi Q
not too sure you are up to date with the current rules particularly in Brighton, but it can easily be checked, as you say you wanted to try your luck in Brighton, Hastings have a few interleague players that want to try their luck in Brighton as well, while maintaining their interleague place playing for Hastings, the current rules don't allow it, we don't believe its right to put up barriers to stop the playing of BB which does not demean the game, the problem will also be that both leagues would have to change their rules not just one, still plenty of time to discuss and resolve
edited to post an extract from rules on brighton web site (presume its upto date) No player registered with the Brighton and District Bar Billiard League may be registered with any other bar billiards league whose playing night is the same as that of the Brighton and District Bar Billiards league.

Personally, I have no problem with any player wanting to play in another league if his normal team have no match on that night, I would not be in favour of a player playing in 2 different leagues on the same night (even if it would help a team out) as that would mean that the order of play would be affected by that and home venues would also lose income on the night.

Mark is absolutely correct, the wording has to be water-tight, specifying penalties to pay in a case of a contravention. I agree with this statement totally.... and wish that a rule change that was made elsewhere this year had been correctly worded to cover all eventualities as that would have made things much easier for those involved in running the competition concerned.

It was entered because the old Portslade league had the same playing night as Brighton and they didn't want Brighton players playing in both Brighton and Portslade leaque on the same evening.

week 1 Report by Andy Ellison
This week the Hastings Bar Billiards League got under way with the highlight being a landmark 3-2 victory for Jenny Lind B at Nags Head A. Tom Palmer and Andy Horsler made the perfect start to the season with early wins for Jenny B before Jamie Minihane stepped up with a win for the home team. The highlight of the game came as debutant Les Thomas gained what proved to be the decisive victory for Jenny B. Steve McGill ensured that the winning margin was minimal with a late win for Nags A.
Eastbourne-based newcomers Ashburnham E sent out a message that they will be a force to be reckoned with by gaining a 4-1 win at Jenny Lind A. Mick Reilly was the first winner for the newboys, but Jenny A's new signing Nick Speight levelled the scores. Gareth Dell was the next winner for Ash E and the experienced Chris Haynes won with 7250, the best total of the night. Finally Peter Payne made the scoreline 4-1 for the visitors.
Mark Bailey made a bright start for Old King John who were at home to Nags Head B, fighting back for a win after trailing for most of his game. Chris Lamb was rewarded for his work preparing the table with a personal best of 7930 and a good win. Skipper Andy Eldridge added to OKJ's total before Colin Southouse pulled it back with a win for the visitors. Andy Ellison pushed OKJ to a 4-1 winning total with a win in the final game.
Champions Ashburnham A had to sit things out in their bye week.

Week 2 report from Andy Ellison
This week saw the second round of competition in the Hastings Bar Billiards League with Old King John going top as the only side able to claim successive victories. Their hosts Jenny Lind B experienced a negative reaction to their opening week success, with Andy Horsler proving their sole winner. For OKJ Andy Ellison, Andy Eldridge and Mark Bailey recorded their second successive wins and Garry Tomlin stepped in on his seasonal debut to make the score 4-1 for OKJ.
Nags Head A bounced back from their opening day loss to catch champions Ashburnham A cold at the Ash. Steve Featherstone won a tight opener for Nags A and debutant colleague Wayne Bloomfield showed real promise before Mick Osborne's experience saw him hit 5260 and level the scores for Ash A at 1-1. Clive Minihane's win put Nags ahead but Ash skipper Sandy Harmer recorded 8080 to even things up once again. Ever-reliable Steve McGill proved his strength to win the final encounter and ensure a 3-2 away win for Nags A.
Nags Head B also reacted well after their opening loss. Facing Jenny Lind A at home, Fred Pope, Pete Crabtree with 4380 and Stewart Chant were good winners for Nags B before Martin Cook became another seasonal debutant to register a win, making it 4-0 for the home team. Then came the game of the season so far, as Nags B skipper Colin Southouse recorded a break of 3550 in his total of 5660 but he was more than matched by Nick Speight whose break of 4330 helped him to a winning score of 6090 and a consolation point for Jenny A in the 4-1 scoreline.

I remember the rule being brought in in Brighton (got a feeling I might even had proposed it!) It was much later than the 70's The reason at the time was that at the end of the night when the food appeared the landlady was annoyed because players had disappeared to play elsewhere. At the time we were trying to keep landlords/lady's happy
