Are these start times for real? I thought after last year things would be different and the travelling distances would be taken into account with regards to start times? Obviously not! Looks like another 6.30am alarm clock to make my start time for the 2nd year running! Well this will almost certainly be my last Surrey Open and the rest of the people who accompany me have also said the same (along with other people who also have ridiculous start times). Such a shame as i always enjoy playing in opens, but if the organisers do not care about the travelling players, how do they expect the players to want to turn up?

I must admit some of these start times do seem strange when some local players have much later start times. The numbers in opens are dwindling all the time and maybe this is one of the reasons. I do think some organisers need to consider this as it is an easy problem to solve because you obviously don't want to lose more players.

Mark, I take it you are on about another tournament as you were on at 11.30 last year in this Open which is not too bad but I do agree that the organisers should "eat humble pie" and change these start times to help those players that have longer distances to travel.

If Colin was willing to play early I would be more than happy to swap times with you mark if it makes things easier

Yes these start times are for real, but I have asked Dave if there is anything we can do about this without causing him any problems. Also Mark if you have a problem please contact me direct, not air it on here, also please look back at your past three opens and you will see you have not extended the same courtesy to other players that you are asking for yourself.

Knowing the amount of work that goes into organising the following I would just like to say
1. I know Dave has had to write a new format because of the entry numbers and the amount of tables. This takes a lot of time writing and checking it. Remember people have work and family commitments so do there best in the time they have.
2. If you think its an easy problem to solve have a go at doing it one day.
3. You cant just swap times with people. You can only swap if the players involved are playing on the same table at different times.
I'm sure now Dave knows this is causing unrest he will look at the draw and do he's best but I know with the Sussex Open it is usually impossible to please everyone with their start time.

I understand all the points made and feel that a 10.30 start is a compromise, moving all matches on half an hour. I have said this before and hope it might be accommodated even at this late stage.

Having spoken to Dave moving games around at this stage causes problems with gaps between games in the following rounds ie you might have a very long wait or no gap between games, so we have decided to delay the start until 10.30.

My apologies, it was the Off The Spot open last year, which was run by Surrey in which i was put on at 10am also.

If i ever put people on at times which i think are unsuitable, i will speak to them individually to see if they are ok with that particular start time.

2015 Colin Robbins 10.00am, 2017 Tony Cross 10.30 first game. If you were unhappy as I said talk to me, this is not the place to start ranting. I will not reply to anything else on this subject.

I wasn't going to get involved in this but since Jean has posted I feel the need to clarify some points.
Firstly I was going to do a new format with 64 players on 10 tables as I only have 96 players on 10 tables draw.
After spending 3 hours trying to modify what I had, I gave in, and asked Nigel if he had a 64 on 8 tables. I had already asked Jean earlier which is why she thought I had written a new format, she was not aware that I gave up. I don’t want misinformation that I spent many hours if I didn’t. I’m not going to take credit for something I did not do.
I then take the draw I’m given, and simply put it into the format and post times. I personally do not look at who or where people are from. Gary did in the past and Martin may in the future.
Yes it is possible to move people’s times, but as Martin has said it affects the gaps later on and from past experience we get complaints every year when people have a 5 hour gap. This gap is caused in the first place because we have moved times to accommodate travelling. We can’t win, someone will always complain.
So as nice as it is for Bob to offer to swap (and in theory it could be done) the gap between games for whoever goes in the plate will be 2 hours longer.
As Martin has already posted we will move the start time 30 mins. Hopefully this goes some way to help those that travel.

I know that all of the people that organise and run the County Open around the country always try their best to provide a later start to those that are travelling the furthest to be there, unfortunately that is not always possible and as Dave J has pointed out that does often lead to a long wait for some players (local and those travelling a long way) between their first couple of matches. Many thanks to Martin and Dave for listening to the comments here and, hopefully, a sensible solution to the problem has been found that causes the least amount of inconvenience to all.
