Well, it was on sale from an antiques firm/auction house. Typically, they didn't know what it was and had captioned it as bar billiards, as happens quite often with Victorian bagatelle tables.
This design with the trigger firing a ball which hurtles round the edge before entering the playing area was used for the kiddies toy bagatelle with a ball bearing being fired round.
The design of legs, pockets, ball tray and backboard on this rare item (I've never seen its like before) impressed on me the possibility that as it a) pre-dates the Russian Billiards found in Belgium and brought here in 1934 and b) seems more recent than Bagatelle, could thus represent the 'missing link' between the two games.

Another hyrid: This one is advertised on eBay as "Carambolette" although I would say that the Bagatelle element is the most original part of the design.
