Well done to Steve Mariner on winning the 2017 Brighton Off the Spot. Before giving a rundown of the day I wish to pass on all best wishes to Jim Millward and his family during a difficult time. Jim and Alfie were replaced by Ros Appleby and Bob Hall in the draw. Steve found himself in a tough group with Nigel and Ian, but despite Nigel beating him in a group match Steve topped his group. Other group winners were Dave Ingram, Matthew Knight and Stuart Mepham. However, none of them made it any further with Nigel beating Dave, Henry beating Silent and TJ beating Chocie. Steve progressed to the semi-final by beating Tupps. In the semis Nigel beat TJ and Steve beat Henry in a very close match Mario having to make a near 5k break to win. Well done to both TJ and H on reaching the semi-finals, interesting that neither of them were driving......!!! In the final Nigel was invited to go first and was off early, Steve making sure he took a 5k lead into his break game and going off with near 7k. It gave Nigel hardly anytime and when he had an unsuccessful reply conceded defeat. Steve was extremely gracious in victory as he definitely felt that the choice of table (by coin toss) helped him as by this point we could only use tables in the rear of the pub. In the plate Bob Hall defended his title beating Michelle Baden. It was nip and tuck most of the way but Bob's ability to get the balls back at crucial times being the difference, well done to both players on reaching the final. It does prove that Bob really is a brilliant "reserve" Losing semi-finalists were Jean Brackenridge and Gary Mechan....I know that Gary was kicking himself as he lost an excellent opening break v Bob, in fact Dad Bob could have knocked the champion out had he potted the 200 in their quarter final, but Boball made the most of his chance. As always ending with many thank yous.....to Nigel who puts in an unbelievable amount of work to ensure that both the Masters and the Off the Spot are excellent events. To the Albion, Gina, Matt and the staff who hosted the event for us. To Toni (for ensuring safe delivery of the tables) and to Jean for helping Nigel on the admin desk. To everyone that help set up the tables on Saturday especially Kev Hall and Stuart Mepham for all the heavy lifting they did To all the players who played, brilliant to see the Mont boys in attendance, for their patience as things got a little hectic later on in the day. These days are very tough to run and those who were willing scorers later on in the evening, Sandra, Tupps, Jean, Henry, Joe, Suzy and Ros (I dread to think how many games Ros scores).....it's much appreciated. Hope that you all had an enjoyable day.
