Hi,
I'm currently looking into getting myself a table (very little Bar Billiards experience, I've mainly played English Pool & US 9-Ball in the past), but I have an empty space at home that is ideal, so I've been doing a bit of research into tables (and am homing in on a Jelks).
But table aside, I'm a bit unsure what cue to use?
What do people tend to prefer, a snooker cue (I'm guessing most gravitate away from the standard cue with 10/11mm screw on tips)?
If so, what size tip is typical, 9.5mm, or smaller?
Any general advice is appreciated of course, but the cue is the main thing that I can't figure out from videos/websites etc!
(Apologies, but this should probably be in the general section, rather than table purchases, would one of the Mods be able to move it please?)
Thanks in advance!

Welcome aboard!
If you spot a table, proceed carefully and watch out for cracked slates on Jelks.
Re cues it's all a matter of taste but I believe most people will say that you require a lighter cue with a finer tip than a typical 18 oz snooker cue. You are hitting a smaller lighter ball and a lot softer than snooker or pool and I suggest you cannot do that with a broom handle.
My taste is very light (12oz) and fine profile in ash, but that's not everybody's! My advice is to have a try of other people's cues if you get a chance and see what feels right for you.
Whereabouts are you?

Hi,
I'm in East London (Hornchurch to be precise)!
12oz is light! What size tip do you use out of curiosity?

8mm cue tip, no ferrule and a 10mm blue elkmaster tip carefully filed down to size.
Some have even finer!
Went past you today twice on my way to North Norfolk to pick up some hard to find vintage BSA bike bits

Wow, that is an interesting set up, I did not realise it would be so far away from English Pool!

Hi Dad, it's me again!!! The bit about "broom handles" is interesting as there was a guy in Medway - Alfie Triggs - who used to turn up bar billiard cues from those very items. Had to find a good, solid, slightly heavy, straight one for Alfie, but then he'd turn a bloody good cue for you. Also, regarding your taste being "light" - what's up, can't take the bitter any more???
