Generally frowned upon and cosidered illegal, but nothing in the rules, so coach away!!!!
RULE No coaching of players should take place whilst the player is at the table. ENDRULE
Penalty if a teammate or friend does?? careful, opposition could coach as well!!

You would need to state what you mean by "coaching". Often team mates are told to touch up or keep going (as the case may be!). Is this coaching?
Also, we have no control over what is said to us while we are playing. Should I be penalised because somebody thinks they can tell me what I should be doing - whether or not I even hear them?
I have been on the receiving end of somebody being blatantly coached (BY THE SCORER NO LESS :o) and I did know there was no rule against it - because I checked after that experience!
Again, just thought I'd chuck my 2p's worth into the pot!!!!

You can't totally stop it. The heavily emphasised "Well done Fred" or "Good shot Bert". meaning "Get off the table" is generally accepted.
However instructions on what shot / ball to play are NOT!
It needs a rule, which is easy enough, but what can you do about someone that totally ignores it??

Sav - the rule "no coaching whilst a player is on the table" is there. As you say, it just needs qualifying.
Josie - I don't think you can prevent team members from sending out "coded messages" - the very top players in the country do it.
