Balls bridged in a hole, I've long believed they've been potted and are just stuck on the way back, they are not on the playing surface.
If ther ball gets stuck in the ball run, you bang the table until it reappears!!
It gets very silly trying to place a ball back on the edge of the hole as happened to me recently, the damn thing fell down the hole three times.
What do you think??

I always presumed that the balls stay where they are, if a ball hasnt dropped then 'break over' next player can play at the bridged balls and hope that one drops.
Happened to me last night

I expressed my concerns on this earlier. This is what I said on "The Rules Of Our Game" thread :
I am able to agree with all the suggested improvements, but feel that there are two changes that appear to be more radical than others, and should really receive discussion on their own merits.
The first is 25a concerning balls bridged over a hole. Our rule already conflicts with the Channel Islands Rule, but now a third variation is being proposed ! I would say, either leave our wording as it is, or adopt the Channel Island wording.

I am more in favour of Mr Q's version, the reason I feel this is although in theory you are correct Chris, the same theory could be said about a ball touching a peg, this in effect is in a no go area of the table, so it could be argued that a ball left touching a peg is end of break. I know the rules allow the peg to go any distance as long as it is standing but the principal is the same just our rules allow it. Putting a ball on the edge of a hole is a loser from the start IMO, whatever the rule in Jersey is.

Cheers Kev,
I wasn't talking about Jersey alone.
I recently. as scorer, had the situation of the balls bridged in the hole and the nearer one was required as the nearest ball. The game degenerated into farce with my efforts to put the further ball on the edge of the hole and it kept falling in when th player touched the table.
Much simpler to shove them down the pocket they are stuck in.

Any more feelings on this guys.
The placing of the further ball on the edge of the hole when the nearer one comes back is crazy in my view.

It appears that we are discussing 2 situations regarding bridged balls.
1). The balls are bridged over a pocket when a break finishes, or do we even consider this from the moment it happens.
answer: I too do not consider this an issue at all, they stay where they are until either someone dislodges them or situation 2 occurs. No rule required.
2). One of the bridged balls is required to be returned to baulk, i.e. as nearest/furthest balls after the bar has dropped.
answer: nearest ball is returned to baulk and the other is placed near it's original place with a reasonable gap allowed to the pocket so it doesn't drop (say 5mm from bottom contact of ball acceptable).
