Hi Everyone
This year’s championships will be made up of a combination mens and ladies teams (7 a side), each county has the right to send one mens side and one ladies side. Each county should state what sides they wish to send to participate no later than the 31 August.
After the 31 August if less than 14 teams have entered the remaining slots will be invited to be filled in the following order.
- A ladies select side (captain appointed by AEBBA committee) made up of players from counties that have not submitted a ladies side. - B sides that are currently in Division 1 – (currently Sussex B) - B sides invited in order as to where their A side finished in last years championships.
So can the following counties submit what sides (mens, ladies or both) they will be sending to Arborfield on 15 September (Division 1) and 22 September (Division 2) (the sooner the better please).
Sussex – A team & Ladies team (+ B team if invited) Kent - A team Berks – A team Oxon - A team & Ladies team (+ B team if invited) Bucks - A team Northants - A team (+ B team if invited) Surrey – A team
I am assuming no Hants, Cambs, Suffolk, Yorkshire, Jersey, Guernsey. If this is not the case let me know.

Well done to Sussex A on their win, and to the B team on coming third a great effort and no disgrace on defending the title they won last year, Sussex A lost one series to Redhill and the B team lost 5-2 to the As first series but won 4-3in all their other games.
Also well done to Matt Knight who won all 5 games for the As.

Unfortunately for him it was Geoff telling him in his ear what the latest situation was. I dont think me and Geoff were playing in the same competition from the information he was passing on . Surrey probably had their best chance in years to win it after beating us 5-2, but we finished strong winning 11 of our last 14 legs against Oxford and Kent, and therefore pipped your boys by just 2 points.

I am pretty sure that Lorin said Geoff had won all 5 as well, think his group was a little tougher than mine as it contained, amongst others Curt and Kevin so well done to Geoff

Only make it Sussex on 7 (8 if you include Sussex B win) which are 1975/76/81/05/11/16/19. Have you got record of earlier wins Tommo?

I have the North Star winning the Team Cup in 1977...not 1974 (I have a Hampshire team winning in 1974) but vaguely recall Ian Lelliott saying that 1977 may not be right as he was in the winning pub side. The County Champs trophy shows the first year is 1975 where Sussex won and then again in 1976, but your page shows earlier records- but where they actual county championships? Wonder if anyone on here has a good enough memory to know what actually happened!

Roger Taylor will probably have the best recollection (along with Ian Lelliott) as these two were established in the county team.
Much of my information came directly from Rod Tarratt, and ladies such as the two Lins, who supplied press cuttings from that era. Remember that in the early days heats were run separately for North and South, with winners meeting in the final.
My copious research was performed about 5 years ago, strange for it to be challenged now.

Wouldnt say I am challenging it Tommo, just not had the 72,73,74 ever recorded as wins for Sussex, mainly as it is not in the BBQs or the trophy. I had read that piece on the timeline before but not realised until now that it contradicted what I have on the AEBBA website. I only realised when you put 10 wins and I was sure it was less than that which it ws...by 3! And I cetainly wouldnt remember...it was before I was born

Farrelly's BBQ'S only ran from 1991-2006 so the preceding 20 years involved much (separate) research. Although PF was influential long before that, and I remember attending a meeting in the 1980s (as Charlie Cordery's henchman) when he first floated the idea of ranking points ! (Though keen, I was not a serious player in those days (insufficient confidence) but kept clued up by following Sleezy and Franksey about and supporting them in events.)
I identified various anomalies with the (previous) AEBBA website information - findings were listed on a thread on here somewhere.

Congratulations to Sussex A on winning and to Surrey on being runners-up. Well done also to Geoff Jukes and Matt Knight on remaining unbeaten.
Was a great day and a massive thank you to Lorin and Dave on setting up the venue and tables and running the admin desk during the day (Lorin doing so while also playing for Northants).
As TJ said a great effort from the B team putting up a valiant effort to defend the title after the shock win last year and winning four of the five matches and finishing third. Couldn't quite turn the 4-3's in to either 5-2 or 6-1 this time around.

I can definitely say the last year the winners of south (Kent, Sussex, surrey and hampshire), played the winners of the northern counties was 1974. We then went to the current format of all the teams playing at the same venue from 1975. Up to 74 in the south we played each other on a home and away basis. Surrey won the southern counties in 1974. They went to the final and lost it, I cannot remember for sure who surrey played... either Berks or bucks I think. And you ask how I know.... well I was in that surrey side. I made my debut for surrey in 74 at home at limpsfield British legion against hampshire. And I won my leg. I have still got the gongs, I think they are in box in the garage. One for the southern counties and one for the runner up against the northern county. I played in the away leg. P.s. I am only 39. Geoff.

Re my previous post. From 75 the south might still have played north in a final. But I cannot be sure because surrey did not get any where near there after winning the southern Section in 74. Sussex were a quality team in the mid 70s onwards....

As for the team championships... the sportsmen rest in Pompey won in 1975. And the flying scud in red hill won in 1976. I have still got the winners gong for that too...

Page 30 of Simon Tinto's excellent History of the Redhill League does corroborate that Surrey won the Southern Counties in 1974:
But there is no mention that Surrey went on to play a northern challenger in a Final.
It seems apparent that prior to this year, Sussex qualified for this by default...... Elitist, but a wrong later put right. *
It is a pity that none of the old Berkshire county team use the Forum, they were dominant at the time and could probably tell us more.
* a possible explanation is that in those days winning the Southern Counties qualified you to contest the National Final the following year.
I recall this from sifting through some old AEBBA minutes which came into my possession. There would be several meetings a year in which logistics would be decided, and often many changes or postponements. Staging nationals was not as slick an arrangement as the one we have now, which had to have time to evolve.

I've got the New Inn, Baughurst (Hants) as the winners in 1975, runners-up unknown. Yes, the Scud the winners in 1976, you beat Tim Peacock's White Harte, Cuckfield. The Sportsman's Rest were runners-up in 1977, perhaps one and the same as the Baughurst team who had moved ?
