Hello all. Just interested in how teams do their scoring system in league tables?
In Cambridge we play 5 legs in a match. If you win 5-0 you get 5 points, 4-1 you get 4 points etc. Does anybody do anything differently?
The main reason I dont like this is there's no bonus for winning a close game. If its 2-2 on a night with a deciding leg you know you're leaving the venue with 2 points at least
Do any leagues do anything different? Bonus points for wins etc?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Lee, I'm sure others will have an input and maybe refer to rival points systems, but there are two universally recognised methods :
1) 2pts for a match win, frames come into consideration as a tie-breaker. 2) 1pt per frame, matches won come into consideration as a tie-breaker.
1) above favours a team with aspirations to win matches 3-2 2) above favours teams who aspire to win 5-0, also those who, having lost, like to take something from the match.
System one predated the second in the leagues I have played in, but became unpopular when teams went 3-0 up - nothing left for either team to play for, they said.
Others drew reference to a match being poised at 2-all. Winner of the decider takes all in the first system, whereas not quite the atmosphere in system 2) .....3-2 or 2-3, so what?
This was a constant political football in Horsham/Billingshurst during the 1980's, one system was voted in at an AGM, then the other the following year - and so it went on. Arguments for system 1) included "it's a team game" and for system 2) "it's a game played by individuals within a team".
It is undeniable that both systems contain good and band, and it is a matter of choice as to what suits your league.
There is however a compromise that draws on the good in both: and that is to use system 2) but grant a bonus point to the team winning the match. This puts a premium on the deciding frame at 2-all which essentially becomes a 2-pointer. This is the system we use in Mid-Sussex.

We do 1pt per leg plus 2pts for the match win (one each if drawn), fairest way in my view.
Straight point per leg has fallen down in the past because a team has gone through a season/tournament undefeated but not won it because a team they have beaten have had bigger wins elsewhere.

In Sudbury, while games won and lost are used to decide league positions if teams are tied on the same number of points, we don't give a bonus point for each frame won. The Sudbury league looks at it from this way, we are a friendly league who promote the game for players of all levels and by introducing bonus points for frames won would just encourage some teams to go all out for 7-0 victories and take the fun out of the game for the lesser teams and players. Yes we still have teams who win 7-0 and good luck to them but at least they don't benefit by demoralising the opposition

I’ve always liked the idea of even matches so their is the possibility of a draw. Losing a game 4-3 or 3-2 can be harsh on the lesser sides when one more game could have resulted in them getting a point.

We do 2pts for a win plus a point per frame won in Nottingham. We also give a point for playing on time as we only play singles.
