Hi, just seen a Bagatelle table top table for sale at auction with a reserve of £40-60 with cues but no balls, is this a reasonable price range for this item ??? Thanks.

Hi Roger, If you look at the 3-page thread under "It's Bar Billiards Jim But Not As We Know It" you will be able to see past dealings and get some idea of the prices paid.
Unfortunately the images are no longer present, but as a general comment one that folds up and is in good condition can fetch anything up to £100. You will see some on there commanding £300+ but these have been converted with turned legs for league play (one league now left in the country: Chester).
Bagatelle dates back to Victorian times, thus predates bar billiards. Factors to consider when assessing the condition: Is the case in a nicely polished state ? (usually plain, though sometimes one pops up which is ornate.) Does it have the original hinge and clasp ? Is the baize in reasonable condition ? (some are ripped at the folding join)
Are the cups in good condition (including the painted numbers) ?
Are there any accessories ?
Sometimes you are lucky and it comes with a "gate" which you play through as with croquet) Lack of balls is standard, they are smaller than bar billiards balls and were made by 'Bonzolene'. Also bear in mind that the rubbers in the cushions are likely to be hard as a bullock's horn !!
Regards, tommo
