Do any other Secretaries/Organisers have any doubts or misgivings about holding Finals Nights or Presentation nights this coming spring? Is the crisis affecting any leagues yet?
We have lost a few players in Witney due to self-isolation but then we do have a fairly ancient membership. It is having a definite effect on games with the 4 player rule needing to be deployed more than it ever has and I do have doubts about whether it will be wise to cram everyone into a hall for Finals Night.
Any thoughts or ideas?
Tony

Great minds think alike, I've just started the possible suspension ball rolling in the Dover and Deal League to be discussed at our committee meeting next Thursday if we are not all self isolating. Most of our players are hardly in the first full flush of youth.

Well, just been announced that domestic football has been cancelled until 3rd April. Although one Chelsea footballer who caught it reckons he's now clear. Our local bar billiards are taking the "help ourselves with hygiene measures" approach. Bumping elbows rather than handshakes/kisses, and extra table care (keeping leatherette and the balls clean) - thus we hope to minimise the risks. Hopefully it will soon be claimed that a vaccine has been developed, otherwise the ramifications are frightening - not only in terms of illness and possible deaths, but also in the long-term effect on business.
Regarding finals nights, we should be okay to go ahead with our plans, the current advice on public gatherings being that 500 is the cut-off figure. Notwithstanding, the Wales-Scotland Rugby in Cardiff with an anticipated crowd of 70,000 is going ahead. We shall see !

The Scotland v Wales rugby match is cancelled Last minute change of heart by the WRU. Less than 24 hours' notice, but imagine the possible consequences if they hadn't.

Here in Northants our league season ends this Monday, but then we go into seven weeks of Northants Masters competition.
I have started to consider either delaying the start of that - particularly given the likely disruption and potential risks to our membership - or cancelling it entirely and therefore pausing proceedings until the likely commencement of the Summer League. We shall have a ‘virtual’ committee meeting this week to discuss and agree.
Separately, the AEBBA Secretary account received the following email which I have anonymised:
Hi,
I think you should consider suspending all league games in the U.K. My concern is that the majority of your members are of an age that will be at risk of becoming seriously ill (or even worse).
My father is included in the this group of people and you have a responsibility to protect him and others that will otherwise go to matches next week if you do not do something.
I hope and trust you are able to do the right thing.
Thank you,
Whilst the AEBBA does not have the jurisdiction to dictate when or if league activity should cease, we will be putting out a note to all leagues - via this forum and on the website - reminding all that they must follow the latest advice at all times and do whatever possible to keep their membership safe . This may include suspending activity.

Lorin League matches shouldn’t be cancelled in any league people just need to use precautions wash your hands a lot to keep germs off and if feeling unwell or getting a cough go into self isolation

I know Sussex is the fountain of youth but you still have some elderly players, I'm sure.

Most players are older in the game and yes I wouldn’t want anyone coming out because they feel they have too as I wouldn’t want anyone to be ill and catch it Especially as players have elderly relatives

..... the current advice on public gatherings being that 500 is the cut-off figure ..... League matches not exactly a large gathering and pubs need the trade. The way this is going I'm more likely to die of boredom than anything else.
Attention to hygiene obviously essential, some ba$tard sneezed in Sainsburys yesterday and the aisle cleared in seconds.
Yet some of the advice being given out is crap: "wipe your nose on your sleeve" indeed !

Provided there are not incidences of corona locally I see no danger, greater than normal, in continuing with local matches. League matches are mostly confined to a local audience. If there is coronavirus locally then league programs should be suspended immediately in my view.
I believe there is a far greater risk attending bar billiard opens where people are arriving from all over the home counties and spending several hours in close proximity in a hall, handling the same items, not everyone will be fastidious in cleansing and you cannot go wash your hands if you sneeze in the middle of a game!

Well, if Robert Peston is right, this will really put the kibosh on everything:

Totally impractical!

I think what Peston has conjectured is a worst case scenario. Another article I've read suggests that the Government would like to see a manageable peak in about a month's time and then a flattening out - rather than risking a series of peaks and troughs. IF we have to bite the bullet, it will have to be Home Grocery Deliveries and the lady over the back is a registered dog walker. Forgetting about bar billiards completely will be difficult, but will be spending half the day in the garden.

The health secretary has confirmed this morning that all over 70s will, within weeks, be asked to self isolate.
Anyone with underlying health problems will also be asked to self isolate.
I estimate that this is at least 50% of all Bar Billiards players - teams will not be able to carry on, even if they wish to.

If you can get a delivery slot Sainsbury's don't any available in the next 2 weeks where I am !!

If you can get a delivery slot then you have a driver and others handling your goodies, ever tried sanitising a carrier bag and its contents? Bit disconcerting to realise I'm in the vulnerable old gits category! I'm beginning to wonder about Sudbury and especially Guernsey flights as Guernsey has put out an essential travel only if possible advisory.

Effect on Rock concerts. "Athens show on March 28th and all the VdGG shows in April (5 in Italy, 5 in Germany, 2 in Poland., 1 each in Czech, Holland & France) have been CANCELLED. We're working hard on rearranging them for September/October and tickets will remain valid for those dates. At the moment the May shows (Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham, Bath and London Palladium) are still on." - PH *
I hope so, I have tickets for the last one (8th May). Like the Stones, they've been around for 50+ years, so future opportunities to see them are bound to be limited.
* all since deferred till later in the year.

Is it possible to have 2 separate discussions
One for bar billard announcements affecting leagues/counties and one for general.
I feel there may be a lot of league/county announcements going to be made soon and might help to keep them separate from people’s own experiences which I’m sure will also increase.

Hi Jean,
I started this area because of the reverse of what you are saying in that a thread was started on upcoming opens in the Oxford area and had an official reply by AEBBA, another was in the members only area.
I thought it better to group covid 19 discussion in one official public place to avoid important threads like that being hidden and so that leagues could more easily get a picture of what others are doing.
I'll split the section when I get back from my weekly shopping (if I can get near Tescos this time)
|
|
|
Post by Chris_Sav on Mar 16, 2020 11:55:53 GMT
I have split the section into two, but am not convinced it's going to work as announcements could get swamped.
I do consider it important to be able to get a nationwide idea of what's transpiring without having to trawl through umpteen boards in case a post might have been made.
I'll run with this format for a few days , but move posts back to their normal areas if it is clear it was not the best option

I realise it might be unimportant but what happens to the pubs that we seem very unlikely to visit and support for the foreseeable future?
Mr Johnson neatly side-stepped the answer but wonder if anyone knew?
Little point suspending leagues if you have no pubs to go back to once the suspension ends? How on earth can they survive without trade?
I understand about health being paramount but I am expected by my employer to be at work tomorrow where, I assume I am just as likely to catch the virus as in a pub?
I have no strong opinion but just wonder if this has been considered?
Stay safe

I totally agree with Silent. I am a licensee and if pubs are shut a lot including myself will not survive. Covid-19 is the biggest threat to bar billiards we have ever seen. Many pubs and whole leagues could be wiped out in the next three months. In Sussex Tarrett viability with potentially reduced income must be a worry.

Hopefully the Licensed Victuallers Association will be able to negotiate a suitable package with the Government to keep you all afloat during these horrific circumstances.
