Working on a 72-mile expedition, I would say that they cover 58 miles of it. Day 1 ... 18 miles Day 2 ... 13.5 miles Day 3 ... 12.5 miles Day 4 ... 14 miles leaving the 14 miles for Day 5 to complete.

18) 50mph ca takes 108 minutes 35mph car takes 154.29 minutes
So 46.29 minutes between arrival times

Not going over it again, life's too short. might have to leave this to Nige if sav and Milhouse are struggling, i have a long hand answer with workings which gets to the right spot, there is bound to be a sorter algebraic solution but its beyond me, i might spoon feed out to assist completion

First day 0.25 covered
Second day 0.25 * 0.75 (left) = 0.1875 of distance totals 0.4375 of distance and 0.5625 left
Third day 0.4 of second day remainder (0.5625) = 0.225 done totals 0.6625 of distance and 0.3375 left
Fourth day 0.5 of remaining (0.3375) = 0.16875 done totals 0.83125 of distance and 0.16875 left
Thus 0.16875 of distance is 14 miles
Total distance is 82.96296 miles
They have walked 68.96296 miles in the four days

I honestly didn't think the proper solution would involve going to 5 decimal places.
My offering allowed for slight approximation and was worked out on an envelope and only took me five minutes.

Question did not ask how far they had walked on days 1, 2 & 3 so no need to answer.
Only took me five minutes and five minutes to check because I had a rounding error so it did not quite add up to the total.

That's why i called it Toughie 2 This is how i worked it out and really enjoyed doing it on the 5th day they would have travelled 14 mileson the 4th day they travelled half the remaining distance so the ramaining distance would have to be 2x14 ie 28 miles leaving 14 miles in day 4on the 3rd day they travelled 2/5ths of the remaining distance x so x-2/5x=28 so 3/5x=28 therefore x=(5x28)/3 = 46.67 therefore 46.67-28= 18.67 miles in day 3on the 2nd day they travelled 1/4 of the remaining distance y so y-1/4y=46.67 therefore 3/4y= 46.67 therefore y=(46.67x4)/3 = 62.23 therefore 62.23-46.67= 15.56 miles in day 2on the 1st day they travelled 1/4 of the total distance z so z-1/4z=62.23 so 3/4z=62.23 therefore z=(62.23x4)/3 therefore = 82.97 therefore 82.97-62.23 = 20.74 miles in day 1the total distance travelled inthe 1st 4 days is 82.97-14= 68.97 miles to 2 DP

Hi Tommo Took me about 1/2 hour As you didn't explain your working out and degree of accuracy i was not aware of your methodology, so only responded to what i regraded as an incorrect answer, we are all trying to make these quizzes fun and looks like you were correct albeit less accurate than i was expecting. So apologies for not defining the degree of accuracy required, will award you 1 point for getting there

Very noble of you Gandalf. I do actually like working out a solution backwards but only to double-check my work. Difficult to do when dealing in fractions or x number of decimal places.
It's strange the effect a 'toughie' can have on the brain. I once saw an evil puzzle where names of colours were spelt out but displayed in the wrong colours. The brain is in two halves, we have a calculating half and a creative half and the puzzle made the two halves of my brain fight against each other and it actually hurt !!!!!
So let's deal in whole numbers from now on. If you ask for the value of Pi, for example, rather than 3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375105820974944592
22/7 should be good enough.
Thks.
