This week saw the first match of the singles league for the season 2020/2021, this replaces the normal Bar Billiard League, which was unable to go ahead for the coming season due to insufficient uptake of teams, hopefully this is only a temporary issue and will return next year.
As a consequence and in an effort to continue to compete against other players, a singles league was formed by current Island Team player Darren Ogier to enable those players who still wanted to play the game to carry on playing and thus keep their interest alive for when the full league hopefully returns in the future.
There are eight players in this league each playing each other over two games, one point is given for the winner of each game and when the scores of the two games are added together an extra point is given to the one with the highest aggregate.
Bob Chapple emerged as the top scorer of the night with a combined score of 12090 points after beating Norman Wilkinson with 5190 – 1800 in their first game and 6900 – 1020 points in their second game, Geoff Ogier took second spot with a combined score of 7570 when he defeated his son Leon Ogier. This was closely followed in third place by Ian Champion with 7140 after his match against Darren Pipet. The final match of the evening was won by Darren Ogier in his game against his Breakaways team mate Matt Wilcox in which he amassed 4830 points to take fourth spot.
All future Games to be played at Hampshire Lodge
Next weeks fixtures for 13/10/20 are as follows
Matt Wilcocks v Geoff ogier 7.30pm Darren Ogier v Ian Champion 8.10pm Norman Wilkinson v Leon Ogier 8.50pm Bob Chapple v Darren Pipet 9.30pm

Well what can i say, great opening evening of bar-billiards enjoyed by all, nice to have a bit of banter like the old days and some good billiards played. Going forward and speaking to people, this seems the way forward at the moment to interest new players into the game and some exciting new formats to soon come. looking forward to next week.

Don't know about 'house points', but might cost you several 'house pints' next year (hopefully)

Bar Billiard Report week 3 Week 3 in the Bar Billiard singles league saw Bob Chapple lose his unbeaten record and his place at the head of the table when he was defeated 11280 – 9590 points, over 2 games by 3rd placed Darren Ogier, this result allowed 2nd placed Geoff Ogier to move 1 point clear into the vacant top spot after beating Norman Wilkinson 5820 – 3470 to take all 3 points in a closely contested match the latter moving into 5th spot. Ian Champion moved into 4th place when he went some way to redeeming himself after his disasterous form the previous week by top scoring in the league to date with 13030 points, this however was still not enough to take all 3 points in his match and he had to settle with 2 points against Matt Wilcox who has a habit of taking at least 1 point off all of his opponents this season leaving Matt in 6th place Leon Ogier finally found his form to defeat Adrian Bush 5390 – 1890 moving him up to 7th place in the table, The final fixture of the week was between Luke Bush and Darren Pipet the former taking the win 2820 – 2250 moving him into 8th place ahead of his father in 9th.

Due to the bar billiards singles league receiving a 2 week break in their fixtures Week 5 saw the preliminary rounds of the 1 st ever draw for a handicap singles knockout to be played at the Hampshire Lodge.
Darren Ogier was drawn against new player Julian Ford in this new format handicap match where Ogier started the game with a 3500 point deficit, however this was still not a big enough lead for Ford as Ogier pulled on his vast experience as an Island player to take the game by 7940 – 4690 points. Next on the table was Leon Ogier who received a 4200 point advantage when he was drawn against another Island player, Ian Champion, only to suffer the same fate as Julian Ford did in the 1 st game when Champion defeated him with a score of 12780 – 5590
The final preliminary match of the night was between relative newcomer Luke Bush who received a 2000 point advantage over Matt Wilcox , this proved to be enough take the game with a 5130 – 3410 points win over Wilcox. The draw for the quarter finals took place and is as follows, handicap scores advantage in brackets
Bob Chapple v Ian Champion ( Chapple receives 1500 point adv ) Norman Wilkinson v Darren Ogier ( Wilkinson receives 1700 point adv ) Geoff Ogier v Darren Pipet ( Pipet receives (300 point adv ) Adrian Bush v Luke Bush (L Bush receives ( 1400 point adv )

This Week saw the quarter finals of the handicap knockout
The match is played over 2 legs giving both players a break each with the scores added together to give a combined score
In the first game of the evening Darren Ogier lost to Norman Wilkinson who received a 1700 points handicap advantage. Ogier was drawn to take the first break but only managed 2000 points which meant Wilkinson only had to score 300 points to draw level , there followed a sketchy scoring patch with neither player dominating the game leaving Norman to take the first leg 3210 – 4950 With his break to follow in the second leg Norman capitalised on his score and moved into an unassailable position and take the match with 7830 – 10000.
The second match of the night followed a similar pattern to the previous match with Ian Champion drawn against Bob chapple and giving away a 1500 advantage head start to the latter player. Champion opened the scoring with a comfortable break and took the 1 st leg 7410 - 5780 , however Chapple hit back with an opening break in the 2 nd leg with 13000 points leaving his opponent no time to catch him and take the match 18870 – 8440.
As handicaps was based on last seasons average scores, Geoff Ogier who had then had a disasterous season only gave his opponent Darren Pipet 200 points start, this proved to be too low an advantage to Pipet considering Ogier’s renewed form with Ogier taking the match 6500 - 370
The final game of the evening was between father and son Adrian and Luke Bush. Adrian started the 1st leg giving away 1400 points advantage to son Luke who is playing in only his 1st season of Bar Billiards , nobody told the youngster on paper he was the underdog and might have been expected to lose but he threw the rule book out of the window and won in style defeating his experienced father with a combined score of 7190 – 2660
The Semi-Final draw is as follows Handicap scores in brackets Norman Wilkinson (2200 adv ) v Bob Chapple Luke Bush ( 1700 adv ) v Geoff Ogier

Week 5 league report
Week 5 in the bar billiard singles league saw a few upsets, with virtually all players apart from Bob Chapple struggling to get to grips with a low scoring table.
league leader Geoff Ogier dropped a point against bottom of the table Darren Pipet allowing him to win the second leg by 130 points, by potting the last ball in the 100 hole. This has meant he has dropped into 2 nd spot in the table albeit on equal points with Bob Chapple. Bob took all 3 points to take the top spot after beating Adrian Bush 11980 – 4560.
Another player to struggle with the run of the table was Darren Ogier, losing the first leg to Norman Wilkinson 1980 – 3570, He managed to win the second game 2620 – 1180 however Wilkinson took the aggregate point, meaning Ogier also drops a place in the league table, but remains in contention and is on equal points with Ian Champion, who was the only other player apart from Chapple to take all 3 points, when he defeated Luke Bush 5980 – 1910
The remaining match of the night was between Mat Wilcox and Leon Ogier both taking one leg each after Leon potted the last ball in the first leg. The extra aggregate point going to Wilcox with the combined score of 4600 to Ogier’s 1990. The scores were much closer however Ogier knocked the black peg over and lost his second leg score, while trying to pot the final ball in the 200 hole, which would of given him a 3-0 victory,
Played Points Total Score Average Score Bob Chapple 5 13.0 57,330 5,733 Geoff Ogier 5 13.0 32,780 3,278 Ian Champion 5 11.0 39,300 3,930 Darren Ogier 5 11.0 37,290 3,729 Norman Wilkinson 5 8.0 27,010 2,701 Matt Wilcox 5 5.0 19,410 1,941 Adrian Bush 4 5.0 16,340 2,043 Leon ogier 5 4.0 13,510 1,351 Luke Bush 4 3.0 7,780 973 Darren Pipet 5 2.0 13,280 1,328

Meanwhile in the non-virtual Bar Billiards world; Geoff Ogier v Bob Chapple. I am looking forward to marking this top of the table clash this evening between two veterans of the game. Each has held the title Guernsey Singles Champion in the past. Geoff seems to like this new format of two legs with a break each, and he is enjoying more wins than he has done for a few years. A couple of seasons out of the scene has done Bob no harm at all and he has been knocking up some mighty breaks recently.

Week 6 report
Bob chapple extended his lead in this weeks Singles Bar Billiard League after defeating Closest rival Geoff Ogier 17630 – 6570 over 2 games. In the first game Ogier could do nothing right after making a hash of his opening break where he only scored 750 , Chapple came back at him by virtually playing the table out to finish with a score of 11270, It was a far closer match however in the second leg with Ogier hitting back at Chapple’s opening break of 3500 with a break of 4850 of his own there followed a period of both players recording minor scores with Ogier pulling ahead to take the lead by 1400 points, but Chapple hit back with a much needed break of 2000 in the final couple of minutes to take the second leg 6360 – 5820 and win by 540 points and take all 3 points.
This meant Ogier not only lost his second place in the league table but dropped a further 2 places into 4 th spot after Ian Champion and Darren Ogier both recorded 3-0 wins over Leon Ogier and Luke Bush respectively with scores of 13690 – 1730 for Champion and 10200 – 4130 for D Ogier.
Norman Wilkinson remains in 5th place in the table when he took the first leg off Matt Wilcox, however the latter player took the majority points 2-1 by adding the aggregate score to his tally when he won the match 4780 – 4250 over the 2 legs.
The final match of the evening saw Darren Pipet take all 3 points against Adrian Bush when he recorded 6400 – 3760 victory over Bush and move up the table into 7 th place

Hamspshire Lodge pub challenge versus Mariners Inn.
This afternoon the locals at the Hampshire Lodge took on regulars from the Mariners Inn in a pub sports friendly. As well as Darts, Pool and Euchre (card game) the Mariners fielded a Bar Billiards team, despite not having a table at their local. Only one of their players Deano, had played league bar billiards previously. The other four were new to the game including one lady player who plays league snooker. A good friendly atmosphere, coaching and lots of banter was enjoyed by all. The players from the Mariners seemed keen to play again. The result, a 4-1 win for the Hampshire was immaterial. The important aspect is that we introduced four new players to the game and hope to encourage more players to play competitively in the future. I sincerely hope everyone else agrees. In Guernsey we need more venues with tables, not less. Also more teams and landlords who will support new teams and perhaps new formats if that is what we need to help the game to survive in the future. No we are not doomed yet.

Week 8 report There is no change to the positions of the top 4 players in the singles bar billiards league with Bob Chapple once again retaining the top spot after recording a 10940 - 670 point win over bottom of the table Luke Bush to take all 3 match points. Ian Champion’s second place total was reduced by one point when 4 th placed Geoff Ogier opened up with a 7000 break to take the first leg 7440 – 50 though this appeared to be the incentive that Champion needed as he came back strongly to play the table out in the second game (start to Finish ) by recording an opening break of 12550 of his own to win the match 2 - 1 with a combined score of 12560 – 7440 Darren Ogier was without a match this week but still holds on to third spot but on equal points with Ogier senior. The bottom half of the table was a different thing altogether however with Norman Wilkinson losing 5 th place in the table and dropping to 6 th spot thanks to Adrian Bush who beat Wilkinson in both games to win the match 5370 – 4200 , and take all 3 points, this then allowed Matt Wilcox to climb into the vacant 5 th position even though he lost his match to a much improved Darren Pipet 5820 – 4400 as he scored enough in the first leg to take the one point he needed. Leon Ogier also showed improved form when he defeated Luke Bush 5000 – 1660 and take all 3 points who until now had a game in hand

Week 7 bar billiard report It’s as you were in week 7 of the bar billiard singles league with all of the top 4 players recording 3-0 wins in their respective matches League leader Bob Chapple retained top spot after defeating Leon Ogier with a combined score of 12710 – 2780 over both legs, However the highest score of the week went to Ian Champion when he recorded a massive 17090 – 980 points win over 5 th placed Norman Wilkinson, which included an opening break of 11090 in the first leg giving virtually no time for Wilkinson to get back at him , and finished with 12940 – 0 points. In the second leg Wilkinson looked as though he would make a game of it but lost his starting break of 2300 to allow Champion back on the table and secure the match. Darren Ogier and father Geoff also retained their respective places in the table with Darren Ogier beating Darren Pipet 12560 – 2350 to stay in 3 rd spot and one-time league leader, Ogier senior hanging on to 4 th place after taking all 3 points in his match against Adrian Bush with a score of 6970 - 1790. In the final match of the evening saw Matt Wilcox gain on Norman Wilkinson in the league and now moves onto Equal points (9) with him. In his match versus Luke Bush it was the only match of the evening where each player took a leg, with Wilcox also winning on aggregate and taking the extra point. The match finished 4570 – 2050

The Landlady at Hampshire Lodge Guernsey, Sharon Ford, is promoting the venue and Bar Billiards. Free use of the table this evening and if someone wins three matches consecutively, they get a free pint. Happy New Year from all of us in Guernsey who can fortunately still go to the pub for a beer and play the game we all love.

Not sure how this is going to work and I will follow developments with interest. This evening a Guernsey Darts International takes place at the West Legion Club, Guernsey. A planned 26 match marathon between Guernsey and Hertfordshire (presumably playing on home dartboards). 'From 6.30 pm for an anticipated six hours of remote play in an inventive workaround to Covid restrictions.' Information published in the Guernsey Press today.
