Do you think a Chinese player could ever win the Bar Billiards World Championship in years to come ? Tonight I am playing against a possible star of the future Cham

Probably only took one person to ignore isolation and the whole island shuts down.

Dear Mr Saville I write to you regarding your constant references to the Pandemic on the Bar Billiards website Proboards. It is in my professional opinion and worry that you may be suffering a case of OCD. OBSESSIVE CORONAVIRUS DISORDER. I am referring you to a specialist in the field, Doctor Burroughes. Whilst I respect the opinion of the redoubtable Dr Burroughs and Dr Watts I have to point out that they are not well known over here. Without wishing to put you ‘on the spot’ I would query the spin you are trying to impart on this suggestion, though I would never wish to slate their work.
Over here I have sought much more frequent contact with Dr Jelkes who is very highly thought of on the mainland and his history does originate locally in Kent. I have also consulted Dr Sams but his train of thought is sometimes found to be rather narrow for my taste, though I have heard this is well appreciated in Sudbury.
Overall, I appreciate your concern for my well-being and hope not to break-down in the near future. However I am well aware that the timer is running and will endeavour to keep one-self up for as long as possible as I do not wish to find myself skittled and thus barred from another chance to visit your wonderful island.

Week 8 report There is no change to the positions of the top 4 players in the singles bar billiards league with Bob Chapple once again retaining the top spot after recording a 10940 - 670 point win over bottom of the table Luke Bush to take all 3 match points. Ian Champion’s second place total was reduced by one point when 4 th placed Geoff Ogier opened up with a 7000 break to take the first leg 7440 – 50 though this appeared to be the incentive that Champion needed as he came back strongly to play the table out in the second game (start to Finish ) by recording an opening break of 12550 of his own to win the match 2 - 1 with a combined score of 12560 – 7440 Darren Ogier was without a match this week but still holds on to third spot but on equal points with Ogier senior. The bottom half of the table was a different thing altogether however with Norman Wilkinson losing 5 th place in the table and dropping to 6 th spot thanks to Adrian Bush who beat Wilkinson in both games to win the match 5370 – 4200 , and take all 3 points, this then allowed Matt Wilcox to climb into the vacant 5 th position even though he lost his match to a much improved Darren Pipet 5820 – 4400 as he scored enough in the first leg to take the one point he needed. Leon Ogier also showed improved form when he defeated Luke Bush 5000 – 1660 and take all 3 points who until now had a game in hand

Well here are the last 2 reports for a few weeks as we head into lock down.
Week 9
saw the return of the singles Bar Billiard League after the Xmas/New Year break, In which Bob Chapple increased his lead at the top of the table to two points after taking all 3 points when he defeated his former closest rival Ian Champion to accrue a combined score of 15290 – 4310 over both games. This allowed Darren Ogier who until this week had a game in hand to leapfrog Champion into second place after winning both his matches 2-0 and take all six points against Geoff Ogier and Adrian bush respectively. Norman Wilkinson recorded 5980 - 3140 over Luke Bush after defeating the latter over both games to win the match 2 – 1 , however it was not enough to overhaul Matt Wilcox who held unto 5 th place in the table as he took all 3 points when defeating Adrian Bush 8420 – 3350. The remaining match in this weeks fixtures resulted in a combined score over both games for Leon Ogier with 7790 – 1310 against Darren Pipet, this takes Ogier up to 7 th place in the table
Week 10 Singles Bar Billiard League 19-1- 21
Week 10 of the singles bar billiard league played at the Hampshire Lodge resulted in yet another win for Bob Chapple who beat 5 th placed Matt Wilcox with a combined score of 15530 – 3490 over both legs to remain 2 points clear at the top of the table. Darren Ogier occupies the runner up spot after defeating Adrian Bush with a score of 7300 – 1150 to stay in contention after winning both legs to take all 3 points and extend his points tally to 5 points ahead of Ian Champion, who although winning his match against Norman Wilkinson with 9450 – 4790 points he was unable to take all 3 points as Wilkinson took the second leg to deprive Champion of one point. The final game of the week between Geoff Ogier and Leon Ogier resulted in an unexpected but well deserved 5170 – 3650 win for the latter who took the match 2 points to 1, this moves Leon up into 7 th place in the table Due to an accident to Darren Pipet’s father which resulted in a subsequent visit to the Hospital his match against Luke Bush has had to be postponed to a later date
League table
Bob chapple 28 Darren Ogier 26 Ian Champion 21 Geoff Ogier 18 Matt Wilcox 13 N Wilkinson 12 Leon Ogier 12 Darren Pipet 7 Adrian Bush 5 Luke Bush 5

Guernsey is entering stage 2 of its exit from Lockdown next Monday 8th March with schools re-opening. Restaurants and bars serving food with limited numbers and following that, all pubs will be open again if no further spikes. We are down to 15 known active cases on Island. Looking forward to getting back to Bar Billiards and finishing our league fixtures. When and where will the English leagues start up again ?

Last week in June is the earliest possible date but I think many will still be worried about close proximities until all adults have had both doses of vaccine and that won't be before the autumn.
Then there's the problem of venues still trading and getting tables back in pubs where they have been lost to social distancing .
We can but hope and show face in pubs as there will be many new landlords to win over.

We are all worried Sav and each have our own opinions. Some people will just become hermits, regardless of age. I know one of our daughters is quite happy to continue working from home. However other folk still want to go on holidays, socialise, go to concerts, watch live football etc. There is no point trying to discourage those who wish to return to some sort of normal life. If landlords open up, I am sure they will want to continue with pub sports in the future although I realise many venues have lost tables and teams, which was happening anyway before the pandemic hit us all.

Hampshire Lodge in Guernsey has decided not to open during the Phase 2 exit from Lockdown, so I guess we are going to have to wait a few more weeks until our league starts up again. Pubs serving a meal can open with certain restrictions in place as from next Monday.

Week 11 Singles Bar Billiard League 23 - 3 - 21 This Week saw the recommencement of the singles Bar Billiards League after a 2 month covid lockdown When they played the 11th match in the 20/21 league fixtures at the Hampshire Lodge. As expected Bob Chapple reinforced his lead at the head of the table after defeating Norman Wilkinson 9710 - 6080 over both legs to take all 3 points, showing no signs of his enforced 2 month layoff. The next match of the night was between the Ogier brothers, Darren and Leon. Darren the older and more experienced of the two didn’t have everything his own way though, as he lost the first leg to his younger and much improved sibling 3570 – 3410, however he came back strongly to take the second leg and the bonus point with a 4580 – 1120 win and take the match with a combined score of 7990 – 4690 and remain in the runner up spot Third placed Ian Champion also suffered mixed fortunes in his match against Adrian Bush when he started off strongly by winning the first leg 5940 – 0 then lost the second leg 0 – 2070 which meant he only managed to take 2 of the 3 points available. The match between Matt Wilcox and Luke Bush ended in a similar vein with Wilcox taking the extra bonus point when he recorded a 4960 – 3250 win over the latter The final fixture of the week saw Geoff Ogier take all 3 points from his match against Darren Pipet to win both legs 5360 – 740 and hold on to fourth place

Results for Week 14 in the singlesBar Billiards league Bob Chapple continues to head the Bar Biliiards singles league, however he dropped a point for the second week in succession, this time against Darren Ogier who beat him in the first leg 7530 – 3670 however he came back to take the second leg 9480 – 1300 and earn himself the bonus point with the overall combined score. He wasn’t the only one to have a dodgy match this week as 3rd placed Ian Champion could only manage to take I point in his match against second from bottom Luke Bush when he recorded a 3150 – 3440 loss, although it needs to be said it was a combination of the youngsters improved form and Champions unusually poor form that caused the upset. Geoff Ogier remains in forth place after recording a 8230 – 1310 win over opponent Adrian Bush, this puts him 6 points clear of 5th placed Leon Ogier who continues to improve week on week after beating long time stalwart Norman Wilkinson 2 – 1 with a combined score of 8160 – 3990 points Matt Wilcox took the final match of the night when he defeated Darren Pipet by 8610 – 640 points, not only did this give him all 3 points but allowed him to leapfrog Wilkinson into 6th position in the table

Apparently, my computer went on the blink as I failed to see the report when I beat Geoff Ogier 3-0 (lol). However, taking nothing away from Leon (despite me suffering from a severe neck injury and a reaction to my second covid vaccination), he played very well and deserved his first-leg score of 5560 and win against me. Playing through the pain barrier I was fortunate to win the second leg with the break. The average scores of many of the newer and less experienced players in this singles league have definitely increased as the season goes on, with us all enjoying the double game format. Well done Darren and Geoff for keeping the league, fixtures, and reports up to date and even getting some coverage in the local newspaper.

Week 15 singles bar billiard league report Bob Chapple remains top of the Bar Billiards Singles League despite dropping a point against Luke Bush who followed up last weeks shock 2 – 1 defeat of 3 rd placed Ian Champion when he recorded a 2620 – 2110 win in the second leg against the league leader, Chapple however took the bonus point with a combined score of 7750 – 3320 to win the match 2 – 1 Second placed Darren Ogier failed to capitalise on Chapple’s dropped point when he too dropped a point against Matt Wilcox , when he went on to win 2 – 1 with a combined score of 6800 – 4770 Ian Champion who occupies third spot suffered his second defeat in as many weeks when he lost to fourth placed Geoff Ogier 2 – 1 who took the match with a combined score over both games of 6500 - 4300 Another tightly fought match was between Leon Ogier and Adrian Bush which resulted in a win for Ogier , when he defeated Bush 2 games to 1. Bush took the first leg 3080 – 460 but was unable to repeat this form in the second leg and went down with a combined score over both legs with 5400 – 4630 points The remaining fixture saw the only match of the week where a player took all 3 points when Norman Wilkinson defeated Darren Pipet in both legs with a total score of 4720 – 1900, however if Pipet had kept his opening break in the second leg things things may have been different

And now for something completely different. Players from the Guernsey singles Bar Billiards league have challenged the Hampshire Ladies Pool Team to a match on 8th June. The Ladies (aka Women with Balls) play their fixtures on a Tuesday evening and usually make more noise than us lot! As our respective seasons have now finished seemed like a good idea. Should be a fun evening. We are going to teach them some Bar Billiards moves in future weeks. Perhaps even having some players from the female species playing BB in Guernsey after a long absence.

Well, it happened! Pool friendly -A fun evening with lots of banter, although the play was taken fairly seriously. Lots of tricky and lots of trick shots played by both sides. Most Bar Billiards players got three games in. The score on the night, though immaterial, was Hampshire Girls with Balls 7 - Leon Ogier's Golden Balls 14. Next up - Bar Billiards Mixed Pairs where we try to teach the Ladies.
