What is the best format for National Pairs Competitions?

During the recent AEBBA Pairs competition, the organisers used a new format with single legs in the Group Games before moving on to the traditional 2 legs in the knock-out stages. Let us have some feedback from people about which is the best way to play the games in the future. Please feel free to expand on your answers in the thread below, the more feedback that we get the better.

Also, a lot depends on whether groups are being used as the format or a straight knockout, hence why my vote would always be at the discretion of the Tournament Director Dave

I know how much time and effort went into this so i agree Matt - obviously Sav's suggestion will be brought into play as we want to do it right but the TD should have final say as they are running the comp? i didnt hear many moans about the new format in fact i heard more positives. We are never going to please everyone so unfortunately the TD will always get the blame if someone doesnt agree!

I liked this years format. I would have entered had i known it had changed.
I feel a pairs tournament should be geared for the best 2 players
