Memorial Cup SF:
Gary Powell (8140,*5880) 14020-15950 (*7110,8480) Michael Wilson
A stunning comeback helps Michael to a first final.
Starting with a 2,500 advantage per leg it's fair to say that Michael was fairly comfortable pre-match, but Gary would make it anything but an easy ride.
Having won the toss Gary asked Michael to break and a fluent 4k was ended with a miscued attempt at a 100 split. Gary took no time to get the break back and set about amassing a near faultless 7k break before playing it safely into the 50s with the bar in sight. Having missed both players scrapped about for a few points but it was Gary who took the frame. Taking a 1k lead into the second leg.
With Gary to break in leg 2 it looked like it may be his to lose, but a surprising miss 3k in gave Michael a sighter. He couldn't get the balls back though after a few attempts and Gary took advantage to take the break. But an early miss after 2k left Michael with five mins to chase down the 4k defecit. He got the balls back quickly and steadily accumulated - but at 2k in he picked up the pace to try and make sure he caught up. With less than a minute to the bar Michael surpassed Gary's score and went on to play out the table for 5.5k to seal a memorable victory and a first bar billard final appearance.
The crowd very much enjoyed the spectacle with many of the Old Oak team in attendance - a thrilling match was put on for them.

Well done Michael. Saved me doing a third-hand report, thus allowing me to enjoy our takeaway (King Prawn curry, mushrooms, egg fried rice).
An accurate report, couldn't have worded it better myself. As you say, a real crowd pleaser with two excellent comebacks - Gary in leg one, Michael in leg two.
So a Final in your first season, and could be even more to come ..... well done again !

MEMORIAL CUP FINAL:
Dave Constable (1680,6500*) 8180-14700 (11000*,3700) Michael Wilson
A first title for debutant Wilson.
After a thrilling open singles semifinal between this pair, the Memorial Cup Final would be played on the same table but Michael would have a handicapped advantage of 2500.
After DC won the toss again Michael was made to break, but he came off after adding just over 1k to his handicap lead. Fearing the worst he saw DC immediately get the break back but the first of a series of misjudgements came from DCs first one-up shot as he left it short. Michael added three further breaks in the 1-4k region as DC kept coming on and off. At the end of the leg Michael had racked up an ominous 9.5k lead which, added to his handicap, meant DC would be chasing 12k for the title.
So, we had been here before. DC had chased 9k in the second leg against Michael but this was a tougher task. With the table rolling left just enough to make the break difficult to get clean, the opportunity to rack up a big break in good time would not be easy. DC came off 3k in and Michael started the game of slowly chipping away at the timer - reminiscent of his English Billiards days and his win in the handicapped Camkin Cup. Michael thought he had done enough but a superb clear from DC meant he required 8k in the remaining 9 minutes. But the table was playing tough and after another 3k DC was off - leaving Michael with the opportunity to play out enough time to put pay to any potential comeback. Happily for him he did - exacting revenge for that Open Singles defeat.
So a debut title for Michael and he'll have a chance of following it up with what is likely to be his sole appearance in the Reg Stone Singles. Meanwhile DC had an hour to console himself and prepare for the Open Singles final.

Hi all I will get the sad unlucky news out of the way first with comiserations to my good buddy and teammate DC. To make 3 individual Finals in one season Is some achievement not many do too often. To lose one is a disappointment but to lose all three in a fortnight and two in a night is enough to !!#!!! Anyone off. As already said many congratulations to Michael winning the Memorial cup. A very good player who will only get better. A cool head on young shoulders, great To see. Well done to my friend and Redhill.teamate Gary .What a season League Winner, Over 50s , Open singles and Mixed pairs some going mate. Only blemish Mens Pairs ( I wonder where that one went 😁)
What a doubles final show on South Park's beautiful top. Dave Jones doing it proud and along with mvc bs Tony cross swept Geoff Jukes and Colin Robbins To one side with consummate ease. Dave with best part of 20 k first leg and followed with 10k in the second. Game over shake hands with lots of people not Getting many goes.
