Dave Barnes has just informed me that Peter Farrelly has sadly passed away yesterday in a Rushden nursing home after a short illness. Pete did an awful lot in his bar billiards career including initiating the Northants Open, writing BBQ for many years, secretary of both the AEBBA and Inter Area and playing in the Northampton, Oxford and Eynsham leagues.
He will be missed by many and condolences go to his friends and family at this sad time.
No more details are available at the moment.
RIP Pete

Peter did an enormous amount of work for bar billiards, especially with publishing the BBQ long before the task was simplified by modern word processors and inkjet printers.
I also remember his lovely first wife Peggy.
One of the best players in the game in his day, I partnered him in England pairs matches.
Peter and I had our differences, but his passing saddens me.
R.I.P. Pete

Thanks Sav
Sad news to hear about Pete. No doubting his massive contribution to bar billiards, without all his work on the BBQ we would not have details of many national events through the 90's and 00's and without all that info I would not have the AEBBA website anywhere near as complete as it is now.
We didnt agree on everything but then who does, so we had a couple of battles at AGMs on how things should be done, he would always defend his position passionately which really only just proved how important the game was to him.
As Sav says one of the top players in his day, won a few opens and an All England Singles.
RIP Pete.

Very saddening to hear the news of Pete's passing. He didn't suffer fools gladly, as I found to my cost at my first experience of an Open when I claimed a high break had been overlooked and he pointed out to me in no uncertain terms that it had been made in the Plate !!! But years later I made a friend for life when I took out a regular subscription to his excellent BBQ .....
Pete was an important figure in the BB world, not only for his England credentials, but for his tireless work as AEBBA Sec/Tournament Director, where he devised the original formats for competitions which we still follow to this day. And I can remember attending the AEBBA meeting (as a wingman for Sussex Sec. Charles Cordery) when he first put forward the idea of a ranking system (billed as "unofficial" - but since ratified with some very advisory tweaks).
I was speaking to Jason Neal the other day and asked who taught him to play: his reply ? "Fazza". (Well he did a good job there).
RIP Pete. I for one will miss you. Condolences to his family.

I first met Pete in 1984, as a newcomer to BB, and sat and watched him amass 13k , I should've stuck to pool at that point! but I went on to play Inter area and County with him in the same team, I had stayed in touch with him even as recently as last week, so I knew he was poorly. I was pleased that he was able to go home to Rushden. Peter was a stubborn man, I would try to get him to rejoin Northants after he left, but he wouldn't budge, too stubborn, and would rather travel to Eynsham to play. He did a rather a lot for Northants and beyond, BBQ was a great production. I helped Peter when the Northants open started at the Diamonds centre, he asked me to help, which I duly agreed to do. He was very unique and very hardworking, I remember visiting my Grandmother, and finding him in the house having a cup of tea, I had no idea that he was her insurance man! Pete had many triumphs in the game, he was a very good player, very steady, when i did manage to beat him, he would always be humble, and wish me well in the next round. I did say to him once, that he may have won much more, had he had stayed away for being on committees, and being a secretary, but that wasn't in his DNA, he would get things done, but it had to be done his way. So for me, a great player, a great organiser, and I have to say, I think I was better off knowing him as he did encourage me and I know a lot of others as well who he encouraged. And that's all there is to it really.

Chris and I both send our condolences.
He riled me on a few occasions but the more I learnt from him at Bournemouth the more I realised he had a totally different side to him.
He cared for Bar Billiards, sadly did not always show it in a way that we can all understand.
RIP

Very sorry to hear this, I think he was playing at the Corner House when I first came across him in the Eynsham league. Lovely guy, RIP. I bet he has already got a game up there with the other players taken from us over recent years.

So very sadto read of the passing of Pete. I always enjoyed a chat with him and Peggy when she was alive, at all the Opens I used to go to. Including many a chat about the game in Jersey, and how it differed ever so slightly from the UK rules. A hard working advocate of the game and a life long promoter for the expansion of the game. Sadly missed now

Oh my god, I’ve only just seen this. Not been on the forum since last week.
This is terrible news. Pete was such a big influence in the Bar Billiards world in the 80s & 90s, starting with the BBQ magazine (think I still have them all) and then tried to promote our game even higher by getting a BB slot in the Pot Black magazine. It was nice to see all our big names, Burrows, McCluskey, Green, Sheard being mixed with the likes of Davis , Hendry , White. As hard as Pete tried, Bar BIlliards just couldn’t make the same sort of headlines as Snooker & Pool. He also worked very hard in getting the Northants Open off the ground back in the day at the Rushden & Diamonds FC with some excellent sponsorship from Doc Martins. Like so many have already said, he worked tirelessly on committees and the ranking system which he devised was very fair to all. As I’m still Vice Chairman of the AEBBA, I’d like to send condolences from the Association to his family RIP Pete and thanks for everything you did re Bar Billiards

news about the passing of Pete. Certainly one of the characters of our game. As has been said by many his work On BBQ, formulating records and Rankings plus his devotion to the Aebba was second to none. I had my ups and downs over certain Points with Pete through the years but always came out thinking he's had one over mr again. I probably first came across him back in the Day at All England county and team events at British Aerospace Club Weybridge Running Aadmin like clockwork. No mean player Pete played at the top for a number of years. I remember we drew each other in a Sussex open and I played it out with 17000 (got you at last ) he then played it out with 18000 and smiled. I caught up with him recent years at Northants Opens and we reminessed of past days and had a few beers. My condolences go to all family and friends. R.I.P mate.

I have the details for Pete's funeral but the family would rather that info were limited to his family and friends, I will thus not post them publicly.
If anyone would like that information or need contact details for the family then please email or PM me.
Numbers for the ceremony are limited so the family would appreciate knowing if you are attending (or let me know).

Peter's funeral was yesterday when he was reunited with his dear wife Peggy. RIP Pete.
The tributes that have been posted on here were read out to the funeral goers which included Dave Barnes, Ken Hussey and his old sidekick Steve Biggs.
We have been asked by Pete's daughter Carolyn Richardson (via Dave Barnes) to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and memories. It meant a great deal to the family.
