Hello! The AEBBA Challenger Championship is coming to York in 2022, to follow up the successful 2019 competition in Nottingham. It'll be on Saturday 20th August, c.1pm start, at the Crescent Club - thecrescentyork.com/ - which is one of our York league venues. The competition is open to anyone who isn't ranked in the AEBBA top 250. To register, just drop an email to yorkbarbilliards@gmail.com, or express interest via this thread. The registration fee will be £5, payable on the day. I'll be maintaining a list of entrants, which I'll update periodically on here, up to the day of the comp. The trophy is currently in the hands of the 2019 winner, Colin Chambers (Golden Ball, York), who will hand it over to the new winner on the day, or keep it, depending on his fortunes. Any questions, comments, or suggestions about the event, please post on this thread. Cheers, Michael

Thanks Joe, that's great. We already have 15 confirmed from York too, without yet doing any real publicity, so that's 22 in total up to now.
We'll be running features on the competition on the York Mix website and in the summer issue of York CAMRA's Ouse Boozer magazine, which should really help to drum up extra interest locally. And the current captain of the York University team is a graphic designer, so he's going to make some posters for us to put up in pubs around town.

Quick update: following some questions about the fairness of the 'no players ranked in the top 250' rule, we've (i.e. me and Nigel) decided to change the cut-off point for entry to the top 100. I hope this means we'll be able to attract more entrants without putting off less seasoned players of the game.
We're also mindful of the 3-pin/4-pin divide, so Nigel will exercise discretion in judging whether to make exceptions to this rule for 4-pin players ranked in the top 100, and 3-pin players ranked 101-250.
I hope this seems a fair way of making the event as inclusive and competitive as possible. Please do post on here or email yorkbarbilliards@gmail.com if you would like to take part.

Thinking about making the journey for this comp. Not sure where I stand in the rankings so please ask Nigel Mark Scott . Master Mariner A , Brighton. Not sure if the top 100 would be to good for me though. Cheers.

I'm being interviewed by the Yorkshire Post tomorrow for a feature in their Saturday supplement about the competition and the York league in general. It's one of the biggest regional newspapers in the country, so a big publicity boost!
It would be great if more players on the boards want to sign up - just post on here if you're interested, or drop us an email.
It might also be of interest to folk on here that Graham Durant, as featured in the list above, is our local renovator of tables, builder of new tables from scratch, and collector and fixer of timer mechanisms. He's recently done a beautiful job of renovating several league tables in York that had seen better days. And he's happy to take on work from further afield, so is very much worth chatting with.
I'll update the list above in early August.
Cheers, Michael

I know a few Suffolk players had thought about entering but the 1pm start has put people off. You are either going to finish very late or it's a straight KO so they could be travelling for hours and get knocked out in the first round and therefore only play one game.
If you could let us know the format it may help to change some people's mind.

Hi Dave,
We're still figuring out the best approach, but as with the 2019 competition I think the best arrangement would probably be to start with a 4-player group stage, so that every entrant gets at least 3 games, then move on to a knockout, potentially running a parallel 2nd-tier KO alongside the main one, so that as many entrants as possible get a decent run of games.
Given the fairly large number of likely entrants we might need to increase the number of tables we hire to accommodate this within the planned time-frame.
But it's true that anyone coming from as far afield as Suffolk would potentially need to consider staying over on the Saturday night, as it could run on quite late. On that front, it's worth noting that unfortunately it's also the same weekend as the big Ebor race meeting in York, so accommodation is at a premium. There are tons of B&Bs and AirB&Bs around York, but the most affordable hotels may already be booked out.
Happy to discuss any of these details further, and very much open to suggestions about the most effective format.
Cheers, Michael

Yep, I did talk to nigel a few weeks back and he said that he hoped it would be groups. It's just a 1pm start seems late in the day meaning a late finish and that will eat into drinking time

Hi! Looking forward to coming up, the Notts guys are bringing 8. Should be a fun weekend.
Just to reiterate what Joe said above, Saf Fairweather and Kelly Gilbertson, two of our girls, are expected in York around 2pm. They’re coming straight to the venue - is this ok? Saf is stressing slightly lol.
Cheers, Jamie.

As long as they are there for 2pm it should be ok that we can switch games round for them.

Is there a draw or schedule for the day please? We'll need to figure out when we can check into our accommodation as we're staying slightly out of town in Selby

Great weekend in York. Redhill’s Anita Blackman won the competition, she beat York’s reigning champion Colin Chambers in the final. Anita strung together some decent breaks throughout both legs of the final to take the title. Anita played well all day taking out poor Nev and then fellow Redhill lady Sue Oakley along the way. 46 players were signed up to play, due to a lot of hard work by Michael Shallcross who worked tirelessly to get this event off the ground. We were due to start at 12pm but probably due to a lot of players not very experienced in playing in a one day event off this type…not all were there to start on time! So it was quite a challenge for me to get things started – the schedule went out of the window and we just got games on for people who were there. Eventually we had 40 players in the venue playing, although I did have to turn away the one player that arrived at 5.30pm 😊 . We had 27 from York, 8 from Nottingham and 5 from Redhill There were 12 groups, top 2 in each group progressed, bottom 1 or 2 went into the plate. Lucky Mark Fraser got a bye out of Knock Out Round 1 as Mike Ragg had to go and he played Tom Wilson in the last 16 who couldn’t believe he only got 2 shots on table 8 as Mark rattled in the days high break of 5,600. Mark would succumb though to eventual finalist Colin Chambers in the Quarter Finals on tricky table 7. In the quarters Sue Oakley ended the Notts contingents hopes taking out Joe Foxon. York were guaranteed a finalist as Gordon King got through his quarter final to get to the semis where he would be defeated by Colin. Sue would lose out to Anita. York took the spoils in the plate with Steve Paxton beating Nott's David Armstrong in a close final. The Crescent Club, a music gig venue, was fantastic for the event. Plenty of room, and couldn’t do enough to accommodate us. They were even able to show the final on the big screen, which Anita was happy about 😊. It was great to see so many new faces playing the game, and with such enthusiasm. I have spoken to Michael, and told him that there are several AEBBA events down in Totteridge that they can play – fingers crossed they may enter the County Champs, which would be a first in 30+ years I believe. Speaking of Michael, he is a great ambassador for bar billiards in York and has done a massive amount not just promoting this event but getting players interested in playing and get landlords interested in having tables in their pubs. A big thanks to my partner in crime for the weekend, Curt Driver, (don’t get jealous Matt ). He drove for 8 hours Friday and 8 hours back Sunday so we could get there and get the tables there. He also got to the venue 8.30am to get the tables in the venue and then got on his hand and knees to help me level the tables. We made sure the break on each table went ok and then found that most players in York broke the other way round….it lead to one comment which was ‘these tables are too easy, as they have the break shot drawn out for them with those lines on the table’…Curt then spent 2 hours packing them away Sat night. I am not sure how he has explained the bruises on his back to Hev when he got home but if asked I will be stitching up saying we went to Amsterdam for the weekend - if only for revenge for him making me walk back from the pub! Also thanks to the Yorks guys who turned up early to help Curt, and the Redhill guys who helped with some of the packing away. Full results are on the website aebba.co.uk/aebba-challenger-championships-2022/

I think you've got the Plate final scores the wrong way round, Steve beat David on the last ball, despite losing frame 2.

Great report Nigel of what sounds a great weekend. Good to see so many new people to us playing in an event and let`s hope it leads to them being involved in other events. Well done to Michael on all his hard work getting people to play and to you and Curt for all the hard work and effort you put in making the event happen (you are both great ambassadors for our game).
Glad you got to enjoy the weekend as well as all the work and the venue sounds A1.
Well done to all that took part and to Anita on her win.
