Hi Everyone
This year’s championships will be made up of a combination mens and ladies teams (7 a side), each county has the right to send one mens side and one ladies side. Each county should state what sides they wish to send to participate no later than the 31 August.
After the 31 August if less than 14 teams have entered the remaining slots will be invited to be filled in the following order.
- A ladies select side (captain appointed by AEBBA committee) made up of players from counties that have not submitted a ladies side. - B sides that are currently in Division 1 – (currently Sussex B) - B sides invited in order as to where their A side finished in last years championships.
So can the following counties submit what sides (mens, ladies or both) they will be sending to Totteridge on 11 September (Division 1) and 18 September (Division 2) (the sooner the better please).
Teams that are definitely in Division 1 are Sussex A, Kent, Oxon, Northants, Bucks (and Sussex B if invited). The rest of the teams that played last year may be invited to play in Division 1 depending on numbers of teams Berks, Sussex Ladies, Notts. There is a max of 14 slots to fill, but the balance of the divisions will be decided once all the entries are in.
Sussex – A team, B team, Ladies team Kent - A team Berks – A team Oxon - A team, B team poss Bucks - A team Northants - Surrey – A team Notts - A team
If any of Hants, Cambs, Suffolk, Yorkshire, Jersey, Guernsey want to enter let me know. Hants, Cambs, Jersey, Guernsey have to pay affiliation fees if they wish to enter AEBBA comps. Affiliation fees are £30.

Just a word of warning, I know Surrey have a team lined up for the 18th. If it was changed to 11th I for one can't make it and I know we've pulled in a few new people to field a side.

Hi Nige We appreciate your position with County champs not knowing balance of teams for Div 1 and 2. As Dave posted we have catered for playing on the 18th in div 2 as we didn't play last year. Although Mark said we maybe in div 1 we understand you are awaiting replies from 3 counties. As Div 2 is only 3 weeks away can we not chase up replies. .

Surrey look pretty 'safe' for the 18th and Div 2, John: Even if Northants Kent and Oxon declined to play, under the rules Berkshire would have precedence over Surrey for Div 1 as they took part last year. That's assuming nothing's forthcoming from the 'extra' teams mentioned in the last paragraph of Nigel's post of the 8th.

I am chasing replies John off the proboards but counties have got till the 31st August to submit entry.
I expect we will at least get 5 teams in div 1 (hopefully 6) as those 3 not yet confirmed have not missed a county champs in decades.
So Surrey almost certainly in div 2 and as Dave says are geared up for the 18th.
Most likely issue is that we will have 6 in div 1 and only 4 in Div 2. I am in Yorkshire this weekend and looking to speak to them about it.

Hi Nige Thanks for your update on teams for County championships and likely divisions. As you say div 2 maybe teams Short which is a shame. As mentioned previously a ladies select team maybe a possibility. There are a lot of fine Surrey ladies and I am sure there are others that would make great ladies addition to div 2. I know times moving on and it will need organising but worth a thought especially as there is no county ladies champs.
Ps Have a great time in York . Terrific to see so much enthusiasm from everyone there.
John

Hi John
As you say there is no longer a ladies county day (unfortunately ended up just Sussex and Oxford entering which is why it was changed) but if Surrey could have got a team for that can they not enter a team in division 2?

Hi Jean I understand where you are coming from but obviously I cannot speak for the ladies.I know it has been Difficult in the past trying to get 7 interested players. It was just a suggestion and maybe a side could be Made from oxford/Surrey ladies that maybe interested in playing.

Sadly, we've had a lot of people come back to say they can't do the 18th, so we won't be able to participate

Hi Nige Sounds like a great weekend in York with such enthusiasm . On a sadder note its very disappointing That Notts can't raise a side for county champs. With possibly only 3 guaranteed teams in Div 2 it may Be difficult to hold a viable div 2. Is there any hope of extra sides. I know not all div 1 sides have confirmed And they have until the end of the month but what of Div 2.

As you are probably aware Bob we are a league of only 5 teams. Three of who would usually be in our B team are away on a trip cancelled pre Covid, and one is on holiday in the States. With 7 of us already in the A team I just can't get a B side. The tables being 'on home turf' of a league with such a small amount of players is unfortunately no advantage to us. As with any league, we have the stalwart players that are always there and others who are just not interested other than playing on Monday night. You know me Bob, if I could have got a B side I would.

Hopeful one or more of Yorkshire, Oxon B, Surrey Ladies or B or Ladies select, might come in so we get some extra teams. Other possibility is that if we do only have 9 teams they all play in same division but that would mean everyone playing on the 11th and know that already Surrey/Berks/Sussex Ladies all geared up for the 18th. We have a bit of time so will have to see over the next couple of weeks what we have.

Trouble most leagues and therefore counties are seeing less teams entering the league and this is going to cause problems for many counties fielding a B side and some struggling to even raise an A team. In counties where there a a number of teams are luckier but even then a lot of players play in multiple leagues within the county. There is then those who have played in the past (some for many years) who have decided they only want to play league bar billiards and then as Dawn says those who only want to play on designated match nights.
Let`s hope that we will see more entries in the next couple of weeks and then Nigel can make a considered decision. Nigel always looks at the bigger picture and will do his utmost best to accommodate everyone but the job is not easy.

Hi everyone, Just to confirm that Oxon will definitely have an A team and almost certainly have a B team.
People should just bear in mind, as per Nigels original post, B teams are only invited after the 31st Aug, once the A teams etc have been decided. This is why i have not mentioned anything before and will start sorting out a B side.
Is it worth considering at the next AGM to opening up to C teams for the bigger counties to get numbers ?

A better idea might be to make it only five-a-side for Div 2, you might well then get a couple of ladies' teams plus the 'minor counties' entering.

Thanks Mark, Good luck with sorting out a B side would be good if Oxon can get a team together. There will be differing opinions on this but opening up to C sides would not be a fix for me. Only Sussex could realistically field a C side and we already send 3 sides. Personally would rather get new counties to play - it is a County Championships after all. Also with Tommo's point about 5 a side, that could be a way forward but think we would really need to think about what teams could get 5 and not 7. Again not a solution I like but should be discussed at the AGM.

As a smaller county, if D2 was five a side, we'd be able to potentially bring four and just concede two legs or even five if someone became available at short notice. It's preferable to not being able to play at all due to needing 6 or 7.

The only problem i see with having Division 2 as 5-a-side, is what happens if they then get promoted to Division 1 and they are a county like Notts (As Joe said) who cannot field 7 ? I do like the idea of going to 5-a-side as the Oxon ladies might be able to get a team together for this too. Pauline could confirm this.

Quite so, would also ease the situation for the likes of Bucks and Surrey in trying to field a 'B' side. You might even gain an interest from Cambs, Hants, Suffolk even. Plenty to be discussed at the next AGM ....

For this to be discussed at the AGM someone would need to put forward a rule change as the rules state 7 a side
Details of the AGM will be available later this year and a date will be given for any rule changes to be sent to me.
As usual there is work being done to sort/chase teams for this years county championships

It looks very likely that there will be spaces for teams in division 2.
As per rules etc i am trying to find out if anyone is interested in the following
Ladies Select 7 Any ladies who would be interested in playing for this team on the 18th September please send me a pm on here. If there is enough interest a team will be selected from the players received.
County 7 Anyone interested in playing for a County 7 team please pm me on here. This is for players whose County have not entered a B team (as per rules) If more than 7 players interested a team will be chosen from these players.
Hopefully this may help smaller Counties
