The World Four Pin Championships will take place at The Masonic Hall, Sudbury, Suffolk on Saturday 25th March 2023 with a 10-30 am start hopefully attached is an entry form. We have made these available far earlier than normal because at the recent Chris Cass 4x4 event we had people asking for entry forms and indeed received some entries over the weekend and therefore it is only fair to make them available to everyone as numbers are limited and entries are taken on a first come first served basis. 00 entry form master 2023.docx (99.1 KB)

Just a quick note for those of you who may be looking for accommodation over our open weekend in March. The Bay Horse is already fully booked for both the Friday and Saturday nights, but I have spoken to the new tenant at The Lady Elizabeth in town, formally The Black Boy. The ladies name is Emma and she has told me that if anyone books rooms directly with the pub for that weekend and mention it is for the event at the Masonic Hall she will make sure you get a 20% discount on their standard rate and if required they will also give you a complimentary breakfast.
If anyone does book rooms could you also let me know so I can liaise with Emma to make sure the bookings are confirmed. The lady Elizabeth only have a few rooms so it is probably best to book sooner rather than later. For those of you that don't know, the place is located on the market hill and only a five minute walk from the Masonic Hall Dave

Good Afternoon to you all.
Last night (31st January) the SBBA held a meeting to discuss the upcoming events in 2023.
1st on the agenda is the World Championships on March 25th being held at the Masonic Hall.
We are happy to announce that all 64 places have been taken and the draw for the event will take place on Monday 27 February 2023 at the White Horse at 7pm. If possible we will try and do a live stream of the draw, but if there are technical issues then we’ll be announcing it as soon as possible after the draw completion on all social media outlets.
Regarding the Event itself, the tables will be delivered on the morning on Friday 24th March and we will need volunteers to be at the venue to help set the tables up. This does take a bit of time but it’s essential we get them set up as soon as possible so they will be in place and ready to use for the Blind Doubles tournament that evening.
More importantly on the Sunday after the main event, we will need people to be at the venue in the morning to help break down the tables and lights so they can returned. Last year saw a dismal turnout and we need more support this year. The more that turn up the quicker we can get finished.
Once again we will be attempting to raise money for SARS during the event. There will be a raffle being run during the day and potentially an auction if we can get some stuff worth auctioning off. Tickets will be done on the day. If anyone has some stuff they’d like to donate, please bring it on the day.
On top of the raffle and potential auction we will be also manning a Speed Billiards Table throughout the weekend. This proved very successful during the 4x4 event in September and is another potentially excellent fund raiser, plus it’s good fun as well.
We have some table sponsorships available for £25. If that’s something you’re interested in then please let us know and we can arrange some graphics and information to be placed on your table of choice.
Cathy at the Masonic Hall will be providing Tea & Coffee throughout the day along with Breakfast rolls and a small lunchtime menu if you desire to have something to eat during the evening.
There will also be a selection of local ales available during the weekend as well a some fine lager, cider and other beverages.
Prizes will be the same as last year: World Champion receives £100 and the World Championship trophy, runner up, £50 and £25 for each of the losing semi finalists. The plate winner receives The Plate Trophy and £50 and the runner up £25.
We will be using the SBBA Website to run the tournament which means the results will be updated live throughout the event. There is a possibility that we will be able to live stream some of the games throughout the day, but this is still a work in progress.

Just to add to the list of trophies Steve has mentioned above, Gillian Cass is kindly going to donate a perpetual trophy for the highest single leg score made during the day in memory of our great friend Chris Cass. the single leg score can be made at any stage of the event, ie the league section, or any leg in the main or plate competition including a single leg score in the best of two legs.

Having a look at my route to Sudbury and the A12 appears to have multiple closures between the M25 and Colchester, probably best avoided.
Dave L. may be able to advise, looks like M11 and across or Basildon and up to me

A12 was full of road works last week between the M25 and Colchester so it's hit and miss, catch it at the right time and it's OK. for me we always go M25 and up the M11 and then across the A120, normally the only hold up there is at braintree on the Maccy Ds/ KFC roundabout and usually that is only in rush hour time

A massive congratulations to Colin Southouse on winning the World four pin beating Jeff Bridges in the closest final ever, it all came down the the last ball of the second leg with Jeff needing the 200 to win while Colin just had to sink the last ball to clinch victory, which he managed on his second attempt. In the plate final Richard Cox outgunned Dave Ritchie.
I have no idea what happened to the Northants lads, they were last seen leaving the Masonic with a mention of hitting the night club, although not sure how Stephen got on as he was carrying a wooden box containing 130 spoons, I will let him explain that.
in the blind doubles on the Friday night sleezy managed to carry me through to the final, which apparently we won, no idea how or even who played on the final.
The Saturday did get off to an exciting start with Sav arranging for us all to get and early morning wake up call by setting off the fire alarms.
I really do have to send out a BIG thank you to Sav, Alan Mee and John Slee who helped tirelessly with the setting up of the tables on the friday, i think Sav spent the best part of 6 hours with his head either in or under the tables, and then helped me Saturday night breaking down the tables, light etc.
also thank you to everyone who took part or just came along to support the event and once again make it a very successful and enjoyable weekend.
Dont forget the 4x4 will take place on the first weekend of September and the date for next years world four pin championships is Saturday 23rd March 2024

I thought the final ball situation was the other way around? Jeff just needed to sink the last ball and missed it! Colin got the 200 second attempt.
Final was exciting with Colin in front for almost all of two legs, just under 1k in front with about five minutes to go, Jeff put a 1k break together to go 200 in front as the bar dropped (I think as things are a bit hazy!!)
Great weekend as always

Yes thanks for everyone's kind words, as i remember it, i was 830 ahead after the fist leg, Geoff caught up and overtook me in the second with a fantastic 1k plus break, i was over 300 points behind when the bar dropped i stuck the red in the 50 off the back cush and played out leaving one ball up, after a few minutes totting up the scores i needed the 200 to win, i missed my 1st attempt, Geoff lipped the 20 hole and i made the appropriate correction with a dead weight shot in the 200 with a faint glancing blow off the black peg!
Thanks to all involved in arranging and running this tournament and to the Balls that were on my side as well!

So many memories from the 2nd World 4-Pin Championships - here are a few highlights:
First of all, acknowledgments to Steve Hale (and Mrs H) for manning the Admin Desk, administering the website and Steve being an excellent Master of Ceremonies; The Masonic Hall for being an excellent venue (a nod to Paul Gooch, and Cathy for running the kitchen); Dave Lillie for behind-the-scenes organisation (next year is already booked); Jeremy Fry for sponsorship including the supply of tables; Alan Mee for table manufacture; Chris Saville, Dave Lillie and John Slee for setting them up for the tournament; Alan Mee again for running the Friday night Pairs Competition.
The SARS once again the beneficiaries of Charity fundraising, and expressed their gratitude with many of their lady reps taking an active interest in how the weekend was progressing.
Steve Hale's Auctioneering has to be one of the highlights - hundreds more raised on a variety of items, including one particular household appliance which his wife was intent on landing and Steve equally intent on not paying too much over-the-odds for ("someone shut her up please !!!") The separate raffle dragged on a bit but that was a testimony to the number of prizes donated. My old mate John Slee won a teddy bear for a companion to the famous 71-y-old one which he still has, so he tells me.
John did best out of the Surrey contingent (last 16) thanks to three consecutive extravagent hundred-hole pots (hand held up in apology to Michael each time). But I am overlooking the achievement of Jamaica's Number One Richard Cox in winning the World 4-Pin Plate: having lost all three of his group games he then stepped up a gear and breezed into the Final with impressive scores. Concerns for Jim Balchin, taken ill on the day, hope he's okay.
A big well done to Tracey Reeve, getting to the Main Semi-Final (the first lady player ever to do so). Good also to see so many up-and-coming talented Suffolk youngsters, boding well for the future.
Finally, huge congrats to Colin Southouse (aka Gandalf the Untidy) in becoming the 2nd World 4-Pin Champ and demonstrating that he can win after all on narrow tables and under a decent set of Rules!!! (his teammate PP lost three games by forgetting to use the red when available) The Final against Jeff Bridges was a real crowd pleaser, swinging this way and that before the last ball drama. Heartbreak for Jeff in losing consecutive finals, maybe third time lucky next year ...

Hi all As Clive has posted what a great weekend we have just had up in Sudbury. Great to catch up with so many friends from the 4 pin world. A terrific couple of days Fun and competition at the Masonic hall. Wonderfully hosted by Paul and Cathy ( Many thanks). A massive thankyou to Dave,Jeremy, Sav, Alan ,Steve and Brett On admin. Thanks to Dave for his experience partnering me on Friday blind pairs triumph. Thanks to Alan for all his efforts running it. Saturday and the 2nd world 4pin championship was a great day of competition, played in a wonderful friendly spirit as is the want in Sudbury. Culminating in a Terrific final which I had the pleasure of scoring. As Tommo said so close and fluctuating. Colin in charge at the right time only to see Jeff make an incredible Last break to catch and pass Colin's score. Bar down we needed the calculator out to collate the scores. Unbelievable tense and pressure the 200 was needed And second time Colin potted it to massive relief.
A few celebration ales with Sav TJ, Rick, Mal and Dave finished off with an Indian Curry rounded off a great time. Lastly many thanks to Mal getting me home Safely..

John I only remember playing one shot during our doubles triumph, and all I remember is I needed about 100 with the last two balls to win and declared a 240 shot, falling everyone cos I actually got it, after that it's all a blur so you must of done all the scoring. The down side of the Saturday was, not only did you leave the teddy and chocies you won on the raffle at the hall, you also left the beer I'd won and asked you to bring back to bay while I collected the curry, on the upside Mr Haynes had also won beer and remembered to bring it back so we had to help him out and drink it. Gutted that we didn't get the early morning call on Sunday morning.
