Congratulations Pauline Withey won won the Special Ladies for the 5th time (in 8 attempts). She completed a special double, wining the team title as well repeating what she did in 2005.
13 ladies competed, still a disappointing entry despite being 2 up on last year. It seems a shame that even ladies present on the day don't want to play ???
Pauline overcame arch rival Jean Brckenridge in the quarter finals, which ensured she would keep her number one status, which Jean has put under threat by winning both ladies events this years so far. Pauline handled the tricky table 7 better than Jean and won 11,430 to 5,730. Jean's consolation was the highest break of the day of 4,770 recorded in her round 1 match against Jenny Parsons.
Pauline then overcame Berkshire's Jackie Watson in a low scoring affair 4,230 - 3,450 in the semis. Oxon's Jenny Abbott defeated higher ranked players Janet Burns (in the quarters) and Myra Hawkins (in the semis) to make the final, which is I believe her first singles final.
Pauline won the final 5,570 - 2,880 as Jenny was never really able to get to grips with the table. There was also a plate in which 6 of the ladies competed. This was won by Janet Burns who beat Jenny Parsons 7,370 - 4,630.
Well done to Pauline, her win, gives her around a 17 point lead in the ladies rankings over Jean. Well done also to Jenny, on her first final, and thanks to that has now propelled herself up from 15th to 11th - close to breaking into the top 10 for the first time.
