For Honchair's benefit really. As we know, Steve is the champion of the Middle Ages, but some West-Sussex league history pre-dates this: How about something on the Dark Ages ? ;D ;D ;D I'll start with this quote from a thread we had going on the General board : I can picture in my mind a green poster with a blank house championship draw set out on it, these were pinned up in all the pubs with a table, and the condition of entering the First Round Proper (played on neutral tables) was that this form was completed and returned to the organisers. Say each of 128 pubs had an average of 16 players taking part, that multiplies up to 2,048 which sounds about right ! A golden age indeed ! Anyway, representation of champions in the last 32 of the 1982 competition from Worthing/Littlehampton/West Sussex: Warwick, Worthing : Mark James Crabtree, Lancing : Gary Ridley Inland Revenue Club, Worthing: Dave Millard Rising Sun, Upper Beeding : M.Walker Downview, Worthing : Tim Rathbone Spotted Cow, Angmering: Bob Bungard Gratwicke, Littlehampton : Jim Cutler Wheatsheaf, Bognor : Derek IfouldStargazer, Selsey: V.O'Neill 26 down and six to go ! So, first question - does me old mate Derek Ifould still play ? Remember him from early days in the Billingshurst League, I believe he played for a few seasons at the White Horse, Bury.

..................and the other one, is Neil Martel (aka Mr Blobby) still around ? ;) On one of my last visits to the British Isles Open - now World Championships - in Jersey, wifey and I accompanied Gareth Lloyd over on his first visit (he got to the last 8 incidentally). He didn't want to fly and we always sail so we took him under our wing. I took a chess set over with me and over the course of the weekend managed 14 games. Those with most idea of how to play were Lloydy himself, Ian Street of Eastbourne and Ian Champion of Guernsey - who appeared on Telly a couple of years ago on Blind Date, but that's a different story...... The last match I played was against Neil Martel of West-Sussex on the Sunday night and it went on well into the early hours, by which time we were both p!ssed. I finally got back to my room at about 4am only to find wifey crashed out in the corridor in an even worse state (she had entered a drinking contest with the Eastbourne lot). :P Since that time I have had some interesting tests from Mario, but the only bar billiards player I know of worth his salt at Chess is that wily old dog Dave Hampton who I haven't beaten yet in two attempts. :-[ (Postscript.............this quote pre-dates Jersey 2006)

Mr Blobby no longer plays in the league; but like all great characters, his return is sometimes rumoured - most recently at a club in Middleton (Bognor Regis) along with his pal Nick Trish, a somewhat talented yet cavalier player who I had the privilege to partner to the mens doubles title some 20 years or so back!
The two of them together, on form would be a match for most pairs - even now, I'd guess.
Neil was responsible for introducing the Masters competition to the league, the top 16 from the previous season in a best of two leg KO over one Sunday at the start of the following season.
The whereabouts of Mr Ifould is a mystery; to me anyway!
