Last Wednesday; the landlords had their turn!
This year, instead of trying to get our landlords to sacrifice the most profitable afternoon of the year (Apparently) in favour of some tatty old wooden shield - the KO weekend, if you remember reached its zenith on Mothering Sunday; we decided to hold a separate evening for the landlords' competition.
The Railway last Wednesday; three noble purveyors of some truly fine beers. If I had my way; those who hold a licence for an establishment which does not sell PROPER beer, would not be allowed to enter at all. We pride ourselves upon offering only the finest fare in the WSBBL and The Railway, The Maypole and Woolie certainly all offer truly splendid beery comestibles.
Honourable mention for the evening surely goes to Matt from the Railway. He entered the event on the back of just seven days tuition - and if it were not for his slight misinterpretation of the rules here & there would not have finished third on the night!
The format? Everyone played everyone else twice; and then - as we had two unbeaten players; they played each other again! Ultimately, Nik from the Woolie triumphed - but it was certainly a close-run thing. Alan; he of the whiskers, real ales, ciders and roasts to die for at the Maypole was a true competitor. Nik is, naturally a worthy champion. He is a Woolie Pink at heart - and a fine chap. He's allowing Jacqui and me to hold our wedding reception there this coming Saturday - so is held in high esteem.
Despite that - last word goes to Matt.
Thanks, Matt - taking part is always the most important thing!
Tomorrow evening, at The Woolie; the semi finals and final of the Alan Stedman Memorial Competition. (Our three-a-side, for those outside the loop).
I'll be there eventually. In time to shake hands with the winners... ;)
There's the small matter of the Conference South play-offs, with H&W at home to Braintree in the first leg of the semi-final tomorrow evening too. That comes first. 8-)
