Myself and Dave Richings had arranged to play Tim Scotney and Mark Senior at the Windmill last night. Me and Dave were there by 8:10 ready for the half past start. Tim arrived at about 20 past. Come 10 to and Mark had not appeared and I was joking about claiming games. We found the contact sheet and tried to ring Mark (which I got the message that it was a wrong number). The three of us started to discuss re-arranging the match (Tim said that he was in much strife at home and it would be better to give the match to us). We finally got hold of Mark and Tim went off to fetch him. We eventually started about an hour late with Me and Dave losing 2-0.

Kevin Tunstall/Rick Dewdney beat Tony Jenner/Rick Cunningham. Well played lads, and I must say the Kendall table was very good, even if I didn`t get on to often.

Hi Jean
I played Nigel Senior last night at the Dyke in the singles quarter finals, I won 2-1 in a very close game
First game , Nigel missed early but left a ball right in front on the white peg, we spent a few minutes at the back of the table, Nigel got the balls back and made 10k and touched.
Second game I went off with 9600 which was enough to make it 1-1.
Third game Nigel won the toss and went first , he was going well but hit a split thin and came off and 4950 was put on the scoreboard. Even breaks, on 9600 I missed a split and Nigel flew to the table and played really quick , with the bar gone and 6 whites left he asked for a count up. Doug who was scoring said he was on 10,200, Nigel disagreed, turns out he went off with 3950 not 4950, Nigel was the only one of us that realised the error, so the score was corrected to 9200. He just needed to clear the whites to win , he sunk three of them with one up and split, but the next one up span out leaving me two whites on the table and one in the tray, I cleared them up and won 9800 to 9400.
A very tight game and a Very honest Nigel.

Can you see that sort of honesty happening in pool?
Well done both of you, a real credit to our sport.

Wow, that would have made a very worthy Singles Final.
And I take my hat off to Nigel, never were these words truer :
"The game's not just about winning".
What a true sportsman.
Hope you can go on and win it now, Richard, I expect Nigel will be rooting for you.

To reiterate on this one, I have been giving it some thought and feel that Nigel deserves some further exposure for his selfless act.
I would put him in at number 8 on the all-time list of great philanthropists :
1. Our Lord Jesus Christ 2. Saint Bob Geldof 3. Mother Theresa 4. Sydney Carton in A Tale of Two Cities ('Tis a far better thing...) 5. Captain Oates (I may be gone some time) 6. William Wilberforce 7. Mahatma Ghandi (going without all those dinners - I can't even see Nigel doing that !) 8. Nigel Senior 9. Gladys Aylwood (Inn of the Sixth Happiness) 10. St Francis of Assissi
(No, sorry, this isn't a quiz, but feel free to agree/disagree with me.) ;D

I am expecting a knighthood in next years honours list now! ;D Myself and Richard always seem to bring the best bar billiards out of each other, and the match at the Dyke was again very close. He was due a win against me as I have come out on top in the other close matches. I would expect 99% of players would do the same if they knew the score was wrong, trouble i guess for me is that I always tend to know what score I am on without really looking at the scoreboard, I tend to count the thousands in my head to keep concentration. The final one up I played and missed is one I won't forget. I am convinced that you don't always get the same contact with 2 whites as you do with a white and a red, and if you do get a funny contact you tend to hit it thin. I know Chris Reeves also think this is the case. I remember Keith Sheard, in particular, who nearly pegged a 20k break in the Sussex Open final with two whites after the bar against Jim Millward. And I have seen it a few other times also. Or perhaps its just a psychological thing and theres nothing in it! Anyway, no complaints from me, I am pleased I missed the one up that way rather than bottling and leaving it short. It was a very close game and someone had to lose, well done to Richard and good luck to him in the semis. So the next time you are left with 2 whites on the break and have to play the one up to win.....remember what I just said.....

Have you ever weighed the balls? :-X
It has been known for the red to weigh slightly more than the whites which would make your theory very plausible.
Come on everyone, weigh your balls and post the results here ;D ;D

Come on everyone, weigh your balls and post the results here ;D ;D Yep must admit Q, that was one of my theories. When they started putting red spots on the pool cue balls, they weighed more and some players struggled with it at first. I also though it might be something to do with two light surfaces making contact as opposed to one dark and one light - maybe a theory for someone with a physics degree to work out. ;)

Well, my brother has a physics degree but I'm not going to ask him as he will blind me with science and I will lose the will to live !
I must say that I am still after 30+ years finding new ways to lose, and not all of them are down to pressure of the situation. I've done that one though, once in a Mid Sussex Pairs Semi-Final, when I was partnering Bob Toye. Needed to pot the break three times at the end to win, did it twice and left the last two whites in front of the pockets. Bob was kind about it but I'll never forget the crumpled look on his face. One of our opponents was Frank Sewell-Knight who I believe plays in the Brighton league, his partner Taffy Thomas, now sadly no longer with us.
So your theory of the two whites could be true, as there didn't seem to be a noticeable kick.

Brighton singles result - Kt 2 Feedthegoat 1
This was always going to be a tough match. Chris won the toss and put me in. I broke off with 14k and left about a minute. Chris broke off with 10k in the second, i finished off with 3k ish.
I put Chris in first in the third. He was never going as well as he was in the second and eventually pegged his 4k opener. With the balls straight back, i touched on at 8k.
Good luck in the Worthing singles Chris
