Result from S'water-Holbrook.
4th placed Southwater hosted 3rd place Holbrook club in a match that no-one really thought would change anything in the league. The hosts went in 4 points behind Holbrook needing a 5-0 win which they had never done.
Well.....
Jeff Raine got called out 30 mins before the match started hence matches were played out of order as he returned later on.
Match 1
Stuart Carruthers kicked off the night against Chris Purkiss is a busy hot back bar at Southwater with everybody keeping an eye on the footie in the background (what a game that was).
Coming off the top early after struggling with the break, Chris proceeded to show the way to go hitting 1k break after 1k break. A solid performance from Mr Purkiss which shows why we expect him to break into the masters next year.
1-0 to Southwater and only 3 points seperating the two teams now.
Match 2
Nigel took to the top against myself but again scored only a few hundred points to allow myself on the top. Nigel was in control for vast periods of the match and looked the more likely to win generally. I posted a 1k break to put myself well into contention as we took it in turns to miss shots which would take the game. 3 balls left and Nigel 50 points behind. One ball sitting behind the 20 as i went to hit the ball and pocketed leaving just the two. Nigel stepped up only to pot the first and then miss the 100 shot which I duly took. At this stage, the footie was taking a backseat to Bar Billiards!
2-0 and only two points.
Match 3.
Martin and wayne traded blows for the first 13/14 minutes until Wayne found a good rhythem on the back board repeatedly hitting 300 here, 400 there to take full control. Another entertaining match with drinks flowing and a great atmosphere.
3-0 and just the one point.
Match 4
El Capitano Mr Darkins and Steve Hopkins pegged just 3k between them in the first two breaks meaning one of them was taking bribes! Steve then seemed to lose concentration and handed the chance to Tom who followed in Chris's footsteps earlier and knocked in several strong breaks to dominate the leg after around 5 minutes.
4-0. Level on points. One game to decide 3rd place.
Former Holbrook regular Jeff raine played friend Sam Jones in the decider. Tom and I both chickened out and took a ciggy break. The first 5 minutes saw both struggle. Sam took a small lead but couldnt hold on. Jeff, similar to the rest of us plugged away and found a 1k break to move into what proved a match winning lead.
Southwater take all 5 points for the first time and with it a shock 3rd place. The Holbrook boys were in great Spirits which made for a brilliant night regardless of the result. Massive thanks to them creating a great atmosphere at the start and end of the night.
