The Sussex Masters 2019 was played on Saturday 1st June and the two Mid Sussex qualifiers performed with a degree of success, Jan Bithell making the quarter-final of the Main competition, and Tony Jenner the quarter-final of the Plate. Jan was particularly impressive in winning her strong qualifying group. – Clive T

The 2019 Sussex Open was played on Sunday 2nd June, again at the Roffey Club, Horsham, and surprise package was HHUSC B’s Paul Jobbins, who made the quarter-final – his first ever in an Open: Paul and I were on the same bus home, and he was holding a mightily impressive trophy as reward for his efforts !

Mid Sussex’s sole Open representative Paul Jobbins (HHSC) covered himself with glory by winning the Plate competition, in doing so playing 10 frames of bar billiards on the day - of which he won 8. A First Round defeat by Littlehampton’s Steve Beach by 5620-8790 was followed by the following Plate wins:

2022 WORLD BAR BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Singles Champ Gary Ridley (BHCC) was the pick of the Mid Sussex contingent in Jersey when he finished top of his qualifying group and went ton to make the Last Sixteen of the World Championships.
Neil Higgins and Paul Barnett, who were the last winners of the Pairs Plate prior to Covid, this time got to the Last 16 of the main event:

The HALL family, who have a strong past association with Mid Sussex, occupied 3 of the last 8 places in the Plate Quarter-finals, with Lorraine losing to Andy Burns 1730-7380, Bob losing to to Dave Gallichan 8040-8230 and Sandra beating Ben Wilding 5700-3620 before losing a semi-final to Andy Burns 4000-10710. Earlier Kevin had beaten Bob in his group and qualified for the Main, where he lost to Guernseyman Mat Ogier.                                               - Clive T

30 Sep 2024 Inn On The Green (Ockley) Gala Weekend

HHSC duo Paul Jobbins and Graham Sparksman were surprise semi-finalists in the Billingshurst Open Doubles (formerly the King & Barnes Open) on Sunday: a bizarre situation arose in Groups 3 and 4, both consisting of two pairs, who were put together for a round robin: After four legs, Group C had lost all four of their games whilst Group D had won all of theirs.

In the vital match which would send one of them through from Group C, Paul Jobbins and Graham Sparksman shared the points with Redhill’s Paul Trottman and Clive Thompson but went through on aggregate scores from all matches played. The semi-final proved a bridge too far, though, with Worthing’s Kevin Tunstall and Martin Smith winning by 3450-1700 and 8000-1760.

The previous day Paul had played in the Billingshurst Masters, reaching the Semi-Final by topping his group with 3 wins from 4, before losing 7k - 11k to the eventual winner Ricky Dewdney. Paul, facing a big deficit from the first leg, had opened with an amazing 4240 break on (difficult) Table 2 to cap a gutsy performance.                            - Clive T

Once again, HHSC’s Colin Robbins was the last Mid Sussex man standing as he made it to the Last 16 of the World Championship Singles. A total of 128 players took part, some from as far afield as the USA and Madeira.

MSBBL have found a hero in HHSC occasional player and all-round “good egg” Colin Robbins, who with Redhill partner Gary Powell made the final of the main Doubles competition - one tantalising step away from being a World Champion ! Hassocks A player Dave Jones was best of our rest, partnering Brighton’s Paul Bramhall to the quarter-final of the Plate competition, having beaten former winners Paul Le Gallez and Ian Champion along the way, before falling to another Guernsey pair, Adrian and Luke Bush.
Today it’s the turn of the World Championship Singles and it’s boding well for our players, with Gary Ridley, Tony Jenner, Colin Robbins and Bob Hall all winning their groups, and Dave Jones also qualifying in 2nd place.                             - Clive T
