An interesting question about Rules.....

I just found this question hidden away on the Lewes Board...... I don't know the correct answer so thought I would throw it open to see what the ruling is.....??

Okay, this is the nearest I can get by researching the term on the web:

more excitement can be brought into wedlock if administered in a Dutch Oven: this is where one partner lets go a huge fart, pulls the duvet cover or bed sheets over the head of their loved one, trapping them in a confusion of methane, while shouting triumphantly, 'Dutch oven! Dutch oven!' The person trapped will wriggle like an eel, the trapper will then nearly die laughing and it will all end up in a really boisterous play fight. Of course, this is all in questionable taste

Seriously, the question being about 2 balls balanced over a hole:
1. There is a definitive All-England Rule to cover it.
2. There is also a Channel Islands Rule to deal with it which is different.

So, depending on where you are, the situation is redressed by one ball (the nearest) being returned to the rack and the other one placed on the edge of the pocket next to where it would have dropped, either at the end of the break (England) or immediately (Channel Islands).

Local rules and even County rules may vary to the 'Correct' national rules, even though counties subscribe to the national rules by their affiliation. Nearest the front is correct and nearest the middle if both the same.

My views on this situation have been aired before in that I believe that balls bridging a hole have been potted and a problem is preventing them returning to the trap. If a ball sticks in the pocket you shove it down the hole, I see no difference as friction is preventing gravity from working.

The last time this happened to me it took four attempts to get the ball to stay on the edge of the hole whilst the player moved around and the table wobbled.

Still I appreciate the opportunity to air a lost argument!!

In Guernsey the ball/balls remain over the hole and are moved only if there are no balls left in the tray in which case if one of the balls is the nearest to the spot it's returned to the tray and the other ball is placed as close to is original position by the pocket as possible.

That is mighty interesting Bob, as Guernsey then have a third variant.

I know Jersey give it back immediately, as it happened to me a few years back in the W/C's - I was about to play a shot at the balanced balls and the scorer held his hand up and prevented me from doing so.

Unless their rule has changed since, in which case I shall expect a slap shortly from the red one Nick Barnett. ::)
