Can anyone say for definite exactly when the last Northants Open was held ?
This is a half-hearted attempt to resurrect the quest for the smart and valuable trophy, sponsored by Doc Martens, last won by Milko, and which he swears he handed back comparatively recently.
Apparently everyone is pointing the finger at everyone else, and even Martin Clunes is a suspect !

1998 was the last one Ian - Milko being the winner.

I'm not aware of any finger pointing Clive :-/ We know that Keith had it last, Keith has given it to someone and he can't remember who. I am sending a hypnotherapist round to Keiths house to help him remember :D

There may be hope!!!!!
After the committee meeting last night, Jim mentioned that about 3 years ago he was handed some trophies from Steve to look after as he had some storage. He is going to check to see if they have anything to do with the Open.
I contacted Wicksteed Park today to enquire about room hire for the open if we go ahead. £950 + vat per day for the smaller of the 2 rooms...........I don't think so somehow!!

I've spoken to Steve and Jim in the months gone by with no luck, maybe Jim has remembered something? Wickies sounds very expensive ::)

Ooh, it's all gone quiet!
I just thought that I Would mention that (depending upon the numebr of tables - the usual logistical stuff - I have a venue in mind which SHOULD be available gratis - the bar and nibbles being the financial incentive.
So. Are we anywhere at all with this? Would be good.

You have the ideal opportunity to start planning for this now - for next year.
There is a gap in the calendar left by there being no Portsmouth Open 2012 and the 2011 event was held on the 10th April.
I note that you normally have Northants Finals and the Jim Wilson competition at the end of that month, so April 2013 looks favourite for resurrecting the Northants Open, if ever you are going to do it.
You could pick consecutive weekends for the Open and for your Competitions Finals for ease of operation of table hire.
I entered two of the Northants Opens when you last held them back in the 1990s and would love to take part in another one before I hang up my cue for good. ;)

Don't worry Tommo, it is on mine and a number of others 'to do list'. It will happen just a case of when!! BUMP !Northants now appear to be the 'pivot' round which the whole future of bar billiards could revolve. You could stage a 3-tier Northants Open, and instead of a Plate have separate sections for: - Major - for the established counties;
- Minnows - for (non-affiliated) York, Sheffield, Notts, Leics;
- 4-Pin - for Wellingborough, Gedney Hill(Lincs), Norwich, Sudbury - and any southern 'Mavericks'.
Put my name down as one to take part ! PS. Check out the Poll results from the first page......

Thanks for your idea.
There are lots of things that we would dearly like to do but, at this stage, we are still very much focused on the stability and growth of our league. These activities are going well with new competitions, new sponsorship and much higher levels of engagement but we will review this all at our AGM in August. After all, we have changed much in the last 12 months.
Once we feel ready to think beyond our league we shall. That said, we will always try to be supportive of the AEBBA such as with the tables and the truck.
We do have some more immediate events where we are looking farther afield.
First is the Northants Fun Day (June) where we will be raising funds for the league and Cancer Research UK (well the other way round actually). In this event a team of Bar Billiards All-Stars captained by Curt Driver and including players like KT, Keith & Steven Sheard, Phil Collins, Leon Beer, Tony Willis, Jon Bamsey and others will compete against two Northants teams in Bar Billiards, Skittles and Bowling in what will be a day of lively competition and Fun.
We shall also be meeting with our new friends from Nottingham in June/July for a match.
In August we also have the 9 Counties Challenge in aid of Cancer Research UK. This is an extension of an event run about a decade ago where a team from Northants will be playing a match against 9 Bar Billiards counties in one weekend with the aim of raising more than £5k for a wonderful cause.
As you can see there are plenty of things on our plate just now, but once the dust has settled we will give consideration to whether there is indeed scope to host a national event. At this stage, however, we have not quite settled on an appropriate venue etc.
We have a committee meeting next week and I will add it to the agenda.
Thanks,
Lorin Northants Secretary

Not meaning to rush you, and realise these things take years in the planning......Surrey Open for instance was two years in the planning, but now has a regular place on the calendar. I'm pleased you haven't rejected my thought of a dual- or triple- tier event out of hand. I think for the sake of a game we should do all we can to reach out to the newly-interested counties. If any league can do this, yours can. I look forward to the 9-counties challenge in August and will probably be there to support and spectate the Surrey leg (as it's nearest to where I live). Bring on Northants Open 2016 !

Indeed, not dismissed - but certainly not on the immediate list.
When we are ready we shall canvass interest at that point.
Thanks again.

Guys,
Please move this debate to a separate (perfectly useful) thread.
The Northants Open, should there be one, will be announced to all in due course.
Thanks.

Fair comment Elsie, I have removed my posts and will hope to see an announcement that there will be a Northants Open at some time in the future, it will be a very welcome addition to the calender.
